Sakuta cements ETERNAL BEST BOY status with this episode

I just caught up with the whole show and holy poo poo this is real close to edging out Rakugo as my favorite drama. The writing/directing in this show is so loving good on so many levels. Everything from the fun dialogue between Sakuta and the cast to the the show's handling of its overarching themes to how subtly they grow Sakuta and Mai's romance so it doesn't overwhelm the story of the current act while also carefully setting up for future acts... and after all that the ed shows up and capstones each episode beautifully. God drat I love this show.

I am the sexiest poster in the world!
Solid work by Kaede's VA at the end there, absolute night and day between those two voices. Hearing her go from hyper-cute anime little sister to hey, this could actually be how someone would sound in real life was a nice swing.

I'm expecting to ultimately end up at a peaceful memory-merging, but I think it's more dramatically interesting if original Kaede is there for keeps with no memory of the time in between, and everyone else (mostly Sakuta) has to adjust to accept that.

There's still her mystery bruises and Sakuta's big ol' scar to figure out, though I'd expect that to be an ongoing concern even at where the LN's are at right now (Sakuta's scar at the very least). My best guesses on the scar are that there was a physical cause to it and he forced himself to forget about it in a similar fashion to Kaede but losing a much shorter amount of time. The other guess is that we still haven't done a crazy parallel timeline crossover yet, so something happened to the prime timeline Sakuta and a parallel one took his place, and got a scar somehow along the way? Or he had to fight a parallel self and got cut up in the process, which given how they seamed to tease "they thought it was self-inflicted" is a fun way to make that technically true.

I mean it should reasonably be endgame stuff for the series, but given that Sakuta's definitely had a puberty syndrome experience himself whatever is involved in that has got to be the most messed up thing in the series, at least that's what my gut tells me.

Also I'd lay good odds that the Shoko that Sakuta talked with on the beach was just in his head as a coping mechanism, since "talk to someone who doesn't exist/is in your head" also hasn't happened unless you count Mai's situation which doesn't really tick that box for me. The current younger Shoko that we've seen somehow time-jumping back to talk to him could happen too, but it just doesn't seem like the right path to me.

Edit: I'm definitely getting too far into my own head with wild quantum thoughts since I was just watching the ED again and saw the parallel footprints to the path they both walk on and thought "Hey that indicates the switch to a new Kaede" and then saw Sakuta with barely any footprints where he was standing and thought "Bam maybe that's a clue that he's a new one just setting out on this timeline" and really it's clearly just Sakuta's footprints from walking to where he's standing, and I need to drink less coffee.

Yeah the VA work at the end was a brilliant touch.

As for the bruising, I think they might be related to stress. We saw them actively spread when she started having a panic attack, and they disappeared after she had time to calm down. As for how it resolves... I think I'm less interested in how it resolves so much as how Sakuta deals with the change. The only thing throughout the show that we've seen really phase Sakuta is Kaede and his relationship to her. And the show clearly showed Sakuta starting to break down after hearing old Kaede return. While the puzzle here might be how to deal with Kaede's dissociative disorder, I think Sakuta will be the one that needs fixing in the end.

I somewhat agree this show would have been way better had it been 26 episodes. But there simply isn't enough source material available. Still very enjoyable and a 9/10 for me.

Can't wait for the movie when it comes out in a year or whatever.

There’s 9 volumes total so far, 3-4 episodes per book would have been enough for one 26 episode season, but it also would have covered basically all the material that currently exists

Oh for some reason I thought there were only 7 volumes.

Well at least there's a chance for a season 2 right?

Right?

I mean, it's not an impossibility. The movie is going to tackle Volumes 6 & 7 and if either the novels and/or BD/DVD sales do well, a 2nd Season doesn't sound that far-fetched. Hell, the season we just got + movie was all announced together, IIRC.

This is a little too cruel ahahaha.

Also I just wanted to say that this was a very enjoyable show with drama and romance that felt not skeevy. I'll really miss not having it around along with soft messages like trying to be kinder to people and trying to be accommodating for people who need help in the interest of helping them to recover. Having positive conflict resolution skills stressed by shows about everyday communication is so important. In my family we have a history of just acting coldly/snarking to each other, lashing out when family members fail (because we're scared of ourselves/our family failing and don't know how to help), or just out being right hostile. It's fairly easy to meet people with mockery, but that poo poo quickly and subtly changes your life for the worse as it becomes a habit.

Mai and Sakuta's relationship is also wonderful and easygoing to watch. It's just two people who become more comfortable with each other respecting their bounderies, growing closer, and liking each other for who they are. It's wonderful how that change doesn't factor into the romance, because so many romances seem to be about winning over the other person or changing oneself to meet someone else's expectations or be seen as romantic. Maybe it's just me, but those kinds of romances are unlikely to last irl and awkward. Long term meaningful change is something someone realizes on their own, not by relying on a partner to whip them into shape. Also romances in many stories tend to be about hurling crappy insults to each other, or specifically a woman being worn down by the negging of the dude partner. Mai and Sakuta really are a breath of fresh air for me.

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Sempai just highlights the efforts that could be made both by myself but also other media in depicting better relationship management skills between family, friends, and romantic partners. I think that it's fairly interesting in that respect.

Also uh... I saw Shoko referred to as the 'dreaming girl' or something on youtube. I'm pretty sure that ties into the show and it has something to do with Sakuta's puberty syndrome and perhaps his relationship with Mai because it specifically mentions that he isn't dreaming of Mai in the title of the show. So interesting thing there, but I haven't read the novel? So who knows.

That makes me wonder, did Shoko only show up because Mai couldn't be there? So much of this season was him helping others rather than needing help himself, it's no wonder she didn't show up until now if she is indeed a manifestation that only shows up when he's in distress. I wonder what the conditions are for kid-Shoko to show up, and how real Shoko herself is as a person in the first place.

The younger Shoko I don't get.

The older Shoko does in that I feel like it's Sakuta healing himself through his own subconscious but I also don't get how that resolves with him seeing her prior to the series.

Perhaps that's a statement that Sakuta's already a fully developed character from the perspective of helping others? His relationship with Mai develops over the series, but at his core Sakuta in episode 1 isn't very different to Sakuta in episode 13. Like she appears because Sakuta has the capacity to help himself but isn't in the right emotional state to do so.

Other than that I'm irrationally peeved that they took the kiss away from us, I have to say that I loved this series more than I had any right to and it's easily my top anime of the year.

The part when Sakuta tries to keep things suppressed so Mai doesn't notice he's having a hard time hit me hard. The whole situation that followed where they both kinda had to let out that they're both having it rough but they want to support each other hit even harder. I've been going through some real life relationship stuff where my wife and I have both been having tough times with our respective poo poo and supporting each other ended up us being holding back on our respective tough times to ensure we could help each other, but it led to nothing productive.

To hear the same issues that have taken us a lot of pain and effort to work through out of a freaking anime? That's a level of maturity I didn't expect from the show going in, and boy howdy am I glad I watched this. I will miss quantum butt bunny entanglement.

The last time he saw her was when he was also going through emotional stress related to Kaede, which was also when the wounds on his chest first appeared. They are definitely implying that she appears to him in times of stress, both in the past and now.

What I wanna know is what Mai saw the note on his table as. At first I figured it was going to be blank or be written in Sakuta's handwriting or something, just to give a little twist on the "she's not really real" thing, but then they just forgot about so I guess she is real? Or she was made real by his puberty syndrome? The way that whole thing was resolved seemed pretty rushed to me, so I'm not really satisfied with this ending tbh.

They didn’t forget the note, Mai even explained what it was about. She was mad that she wasn’t there when Sakuta needed her most, and she was mad at herself for being jealous that Shoko was, so she let her emotions get the best of her and she unfairly lashed out

They "forgot the note" in the sense that they didn't imply it was anything other than what it appeared. I guess that's only "forgot" in that I expected it to be something it wasn't.

Not quite as satisfying an ending as I was hoping for. I wish Sakuta was given more time to grieve over the loss of panda-imouto Kaede and reconnect with og Kaede, because all of that was pretty rushed. I was also surprised there was no drama around whether or not og Kaede would stick or whether she would regress to panda-imouto Kaede. Suddenly this last episode was mostly a Shouko movie setup and some uncharacteristically awkward drama with Mai, which might also be movie setup.

I'm disappointed they dropped the ball like this on what was likely to be my favorite show of the year.

I don’t think Mai was uncharacteristic, it’s very much like her to let her own feelings get the best of her. Mai is still a teenage girl with a crush, she wanted to be there when her boyfriend needed her, but wasn’t able to. Instead it happened to be his “ex” and she found herself being jealous that it was Shoko and not her, and she hates herself for feeling jealous but let’s her emotions get the best of her in the heat of the moment. This has always been a part of their relationship

Agreed. It feels even worse because of how well they built up the whole drama - the last two episodes knocked it out of the park for me and the contrast between those episodes and the rushed ending stands out even more. It felt like they condensed an entire 13-ep cour into a single montage, and it's so disappointing that they couldn't give so many monumental moments (og Kaede reading imouto Kaede's diary) the treatment they deserved.

When put together with scenes like Sakuta introducing Mai to his parents, which I would expect to be used as a narrative climax rather than a footnote, I get the impression that a second season post-movie isn't even in consideration. Ultimately absolutely my favourite show of the season, but the better the show is the worse a rushed ending hits.
