I think 70 is pretty hosed today. I was gonna go to Copper but ended up turning around in Idaho Springs when my ETA was still 2+ hours into the future. I probably could have gone to Winter Park but I just backtracked a little and went to Eldora yet again. Snow was alright at least!

Next week and a half are always a complete and total poo poo show with the noted exception of Christmas Day, which will be dead.

I have the week off and I'm honestly just thinking about going fly fishing.

I am so glad I don't have to deal with that bullshit anymore. It wasn't unbearable, but waking up at 730 and being in the lift line an hour and a half later is such a delight

Also leave earlier. No, earlier than that. And if it's snowing, find a way to leave even before it's early

I try not to wake up early on my days off. I have no problem with showing up to the mountain at 11. I'm not sitting in traffic for 2 hours though. It's usually not a huge issue on weekdays, even if it is snowing.

There is a supervisor bid out for Aspen tower but I seriously doubt I put in for it. I'd keep my pay for 3 years but take a massive pay cut after that if I wasn't able to get out. Like 40%+ kind of pay cut.

Eldora is decent, especially for the convenience factor.

Also, if you get up early on your days off then you are actually getting to sleep in on your workdays. Mind games.

The only thing Eldora really has going for it is the convenience factor.

I only have to wake up early on 3 of my work days. Still not worth it on my days off most of the time.

You're also supposed to wake up early to go fishing. My lazy rear end might be on the water by noon?

I just get up super early and have a nap after skiing so it's like I get to sleep twice and nothing feels better than a nap after a day of shredding.

The snow was great all trip in Park City and Deer Valley and I heard it was good at Alta too. They both had runs with groomed snow that were roped off to keep em fresh for the holidays. It was also super quiet though this is the first time in a while I've been out there when it wasn't a holiday weekend. We even had 2 inches of fresh powder last night, so that was fun to ski in

The one thing that sucks about finally getting in shape is that you don't feel sore after a long trip. I actually kinda miss it, it makes me feel like I didn't push myself enough.

I think this is going to be the status quo for some time, NWAC’s report this morning had every region redzoned for like every kind of slide, and this stuff is gonna take time to settle. Nothing wrong with some low-angle woods though. And I’ve got no fear of coreshots aside from the top of chair 6 at this point either. Have fun out there!

Same thing at Highlands. Snowed heavily until around 1, then broke up to mostly blue skies. The bowl was disgusting, b-fore had collected boot to knee deep fluff blowing into the chute while ballroom had thigh deep wind loading along a certain ridge. And this was at like, 1130. Before that, there were like, zero tracks anywhere on stuff right under the lift.

Just outrageously good. And the place was basically deserted

how does mt baker compare to cypress mountain this time of the year (in terms of crowds/size)? Wondering if it's worth the trek.

ImplicitAssembler
Jan 24, 2013

A lot less people. A lot more terrain. Grooming is so-so, so if you prefer groomers, Baker is not the place. Food is good and cheap.
Lifts are ancient.
The main thing is that you need half-decent snow for Baker to be worthwhile.

Update on the The Gondola gondola

“Winter Park” posted:

Yesterday and this morning we completed tuning and adjusting out terminals. We are currently in the process of dynamic load testing, which entails loading the uphill line of cabins with about 2,000 lbs of weight per cabin then running the lift through all of its operation processes

Am I a big dummy, or does 2000lbs of weight feel light for load testing a 10-person cabin? Are they just trusting the engineering?

It is usually just 55 gallon drums filled with water. 4 of them is about 1800 lbs

Grimey Drawer

Im neither an engineer nor do I work in lift ops, but it seems like you would want to put more weight on it than you reasonably expect to ever actually have. Maybe that’s “over-engineering” or whatever, but as a gondola rider I would like to think the system I am on has a good safety margin.

Then again it’s pretty uncommon for every gondola car to be packed to capacity with large men.

I highly doubt that the test load is anywhere near the actual capacity. So don't worry. (I am a civil engineer)

Test carefully first, tougher later. They might be testing different aspects of it as well.

Parallel lines do meet, but they do it incognito

College Slice

2,000lbs has gotta be well above average per gondola, and if they're doing that for every car then the system as a whole has got to be way way over any real-world scenario they'd encounter, right?

edit: by "every" i mean half

Spime Wrangler
Feb 23, 2003

Because we can.

2000lbs per cabin is a weight budget of 200lbs per person including gear. Probably not far off from average loading at full capacity during busy times, but testing to a factor of safety between 0.8 to 1.2 isn’t exactly a monster stress test.
