oh wow, i just noticed The Babe Rainbow on there. i didn't even think they were still around. all i know is they did a song called "Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest" that i was obsessed with 5 or 6 years ago

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh2qHxUDt6o

uh haha so this song now has 3 million views... so i'm guessing they were used in a soundtrack at some point or something because for a very long time this video had like 30k views lmao

ohhhhhh so that's what happened lmao

it's so weird because back in like 2017 i definitely thought they were just gonna be one of those bands that just disappeared after making one good song

same, but i know it's just literally never gonna happen. Jason doesn't need it to happen, because there are probably a LOT more people who want to see Spiritualized live than who want to see Spacemen 3

i could see a reunion for a festival, but that would require them to want to do it, and as far as i know Jason and Sonic have not said a single word to each other since like 1990

I would absolutely not turn down a chance to see Spacemen3 live, but I'm also not even going to try and pretend that I enjoy their songs more than Jason's work under the Spiritualized moniker.

I’d go if it were at a festival I’m sure even though it would be too big of a crowd. But yeah I’m sure it won’t happen. I did see Spectrum playing some Spacemen 3 songs in a relatively small club so that’s probably the closest I’ll get.

Any chance any of you know the guitarist from that tour? As I recall he was young and really good.

It’s just a matter of preference of course but Spacemen 3 are miles ahead for me. Also the two times I saw Spiritualized were easily some of the most unimpressive shows I’ve ever seen so that’s coloring my opinion even though I know it was probably bad luck.

Yeah, that could definitely be a few bad runs for you, which is unfortunate. I'm probably bathing in bias but I've seen them maybe 5 or 6 times and it's never been underwhelming. Still, I owe it to myself to dive into more Spacemen 3 on the regular. I only have Dreamweapon (which I DEEPLY enjoy) and Perfect Prescription on vinyl, but all their stuff is on spotify ripe for streaming. I have enjoyed the live stuff that's available. I need to give the studio material more love.

Even though I count Spacemen 3 as one of my all time favorite bands I mostly just repeatedly listen to Taking Drugs to Make Music To Take Drugs To. I like the raw demo sound a lot more than the way a lot of the songs were later released.

And yeah Dreamweapon rules. I love this story Will Carruthers tells about it, how he was so high he didn’t even realize he never turned on his amp: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/sep/26/spacemen-3-will-carruthers-playing-the-bass-extract

Help, I can't stop watching this Banana Splits clip:

Its easily the best version of the song I can find - especially the fuzzy guitars at the start.

Just listening to this album now, it’s pretty great. I was kinda iffy on the first two songs just because of the abundance of fx (rhythmic breathing in the first one, weird sounds like you’re turning your kitchen upside down looking for the butter knife in the second one - guess I was still foggy on the album at that point he he), but it smoothed out really quick after that. The title track might be my favourite song of theirs so far (and I fuckin loved With Dim Light, btw)

I feel psych gets more readily mixed into local music traditions than most other music genres.

I went down a Turkish psych rock rabbit hole a few years back, but I only really remember this:

If you can find the album, its pretty good.

that Turkish song is good, i think i keep noticing cool stuff i like coming out of Turkey so i'm curious about the music scene there

to switch gears, i found this and i'm not sure what other thread to post it in but i vibe with pretty much everything in this thread so far so maybe it's a good fit. anyway, Korean court music from 1400's? that sounds droney and discordant

Is there a reason or is it a coincidence that so much great psychedelic rock is coming out of Australia? Tame, Pond, Gum, King Gizz come to mind immediately.

I'll take a dumb punt at an answer. Uhh

Big open empty lonely spaces, this is a serious answer, small town middle of nowhere in a way that imho it's hard to describe or compare.

Loud voices because Aussies are louder than they realize : p

Nz has a damp jangly thing going on which works very well with the small old flats and hills our music 🎵 sprung from this is all conjecture

Also, can I just say psych rock thread, I don't consider myself a psych rock guy but when I put on some Black Mountain it makes me feel things

Both of those are cool :wooper:

I saw Sonic Boom and Panda Bear when they came to NYC a couple months ago. A few days before the show I got a notification that because I bought tickets to the show I could have free tickets to a Dolby atmos listening party for the album. A friend and I went, it was at an office building in midtown, they had a very corporate little theater with speakers all the way around the room and on the ceiling. There were maybe 25 people there. Sonic walked in and mumbled his way through a little introduction, then they played the whole album nice and loud while an animation of the Reset logo played on the screen. It sounded amazing in there. Everyone sat there with their eyes closed, looking high. Luckily right before I left home I realized I should bring something for Sonic to sign in case he was there, until then I hadn’t even really thought he might be. He was quiet but nice and let me gush for a minute while he signed Dreamweapon and a solo 10”.

Nice thing to happen completely out of the blue and for free considering I’m unemployed
