Cranking King Gizzs latest but it’s hardly psychedelic rock, well some of it is, it’s awesome so far

Its more Stoner metal with psychadelic overtones but its supremely loving good regardless of what you want to classify it as.

King Gizzard did a timed-release video thing yesterday and it was a pretty fuckin sick imo. its available through the usual non-kosher channels now to download.

One can hope, though I bought the Porn Crumpets new album on CD simply because it's more readily available.

Here's some other stuff I've been listening to lately that may loosely fit the definition of psychedelic rock:

Graveyard, particularly this album, Peace.

Svvamp

And the classic Leafhound

I'm having a suprisingly hard time finding modern bands in the psychedelic hard rock mode. I have tried Kadavar which came from the recommendation thread here, and it was okay, but not quite enough to make me go buy a copy. Maybe I am just too picky when it comes to music?

you may find more stuff along the lines of the above in the Stoner/Doom/Sludge thread, which has a lot of overlap with this thread.

Check out Orchid, perfectly in-line with these three. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOhqGBI8mVk

additionally, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats

and Child https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNdH33ncOZs

if you want to go further into heavy/riffy with still a good amount of psych, Dead Roots Stirring By Elder is a staple. releases from that point on get more proggy than heavy, but still pretty nice to listen to in a dark room (I like Golder and Silver Sessions the most after DSR)

Listening to Psych stuff sober is fine and normal. you dont need to be stoned to enjoy stoner/doom but it definitely makes it better IMO.

most of the time when I listen to songs that I experienced while on psych drugs it triggers similar feelings/sensations so its kind of like a natural high.

Most of the Japanese psych scene did their thing sober(and I assume still do) because Japanese drug laws are really harsh

if you think you cant get drugs in Japan you havent been to Hakuba or Niseko during ski season.

Turtle Skulls new album 'Monoliths' is out today, for fee-free-friday on bandcamp. also on streaming.

they describe themselves as 'flower doom' and I agree. bit shoe-gazey with some heavier parts thrown in, fuzzy guitars and writhing synths.

I really like how some of the elements are reused and return at points on the album.

"Why do you ask?" is probably my favorite track.

I got to see them a couple times, once with ORB opening. They both put on great shows. Enjoy :)

Didn't King Gizzard lose one of their drummers?

I didn't realize concerts are happening again.

we haven't had community transmission in Australia for like a month and a bit nationally, and my state/city has been clean for close to 3 months.

dancefloors and venues are operating pretty much as normal now, its god drat fantastic to be seeing live music 3 nights a week again. might be a while before international bands come back here but theres plenty of local acts to keep me busy, and stoner/doom is a booming scene here in Aus so Im covered.

for me at least, its a few things.

stoner/doom its the fuzzy tones, the miserable, crushing riffs and as Beastwars say 'obey the riff'. just let it ride for as long as feels good. I saw some Doom/sludge bands this weekend just gone and when they're just crushing you with the same super loud, heavy riff it becomes really hypnotic.

kraut rock is sorta the same vibe. repetitive but slowly building. not in a prog sorta way, but the slow ebb and flow and build of a riff, the little fills and variances and swells.

a hooky riff and repetition is really what does it, but it works in a lot of genres. AC/DCs Jailbreak is a favorite song of mine for the same reasons, but not what you'd consider Stoner or Doom or Psychedelic.

Psych rock it leans more towards the hypnotic nature of the music and playing tricks on my mind with stereo effects.

theres also the drugs factor. both types of music sound incredible on drugs.

semi-related, I was reading an article about some cave paintings found in africa that featured human figures with mushroom-shaped heads. The article went on to say that tribal music and dancing was used by shamans to induce states of hypnosis or trance and the key was the repetition of the dancing and the music over several hours. then the shamans accidentally ate the right kind of mushrooms or cactus and were like 'woah you mean we can just eat this instead of dancing in circles for 3 hours?' so maybe thats part of it?

Also, the human brain is wired to identify patterns and sequences. thats why we love 'the drop' in dance music, the 'nasty riff comes back but slower' in stoner.

my theory anyway.

e: the other thing I forgot about doom/stoner is that it the miserable sound of a lot of it is really cathartic for me. like the music is leeching all the sadness and poo poo out of my head and through the speakers. its refreshing to sit down and listen to Bongrippers albums start to finish for me whereas most people, when i show them what i listen to, the first thing they ask is 'doesnt this make you want to kill yourself?'

King gizz are doing 5 shows in 5 nights exploring their whole sound.

Got my tickets to the heavy metal show :) I saw KGLW a few weeks ago and got the mirotonal/jammy stuff, and Rats Nest is my favorite album so playing that in full is going to be quite a treat.

I realised I must have listened to one of their Levitation sessions on YouTube. Its weird, but I like all the musical elements there (especially the bass player heading towards a dub / Al Cisneros thing) but not the actual songs.

I can't believe I never heard of Stonefield til this week. This is what happens when you stop listening to Triple J, I guess.

Singing drummer - check
Organs - check
Slow stoner psyche - check
Band of 4 sisters makes it look like someone cloned themselves a band - check

Just wish the bass was more interesting, rather than just following the guitar though.

Triple J is terrible but if they're actually playing something even remotely close to stoner/psych that isnt one of their Darling Artists already then I'll allow it

I get most of my music recommendations either in this thread, the stoner/doom thread, or my Spotify discover weekly/release radar. Spotify can be hit or miss but the the S/N ratio of the threads has been pretty great.
