MGS3 is such a good game but it suffers so much from that beginning. Must be 30 minutes of black and white history slideshow in the first hour and a half, plus another 50 minutes of other cutscene and codec.

once you're through that though the game is an all timer.

I will say that, playing MGS3 as a 10-year-old when it first came out, that 30 minutes of history slideshow was interesting as hell because I had basically no idea about anything about the Cold War beyond "USA and Russia hated each other until Russia stopped being communist"

Honestly I feel like MGS doesn't get enough credit for that kind of thing; I wouldn't be surprised if MGS going that deep into the weeds on geopolitics (and making the points it does about the issue) caused a lot of people who played the games as kids to grow up into left-anarchists

On a more related note I'm finally getting into s3 and good god, Warren Ellis, we get it, you have a femdom pet play kink

e: like, I like the whole Hector and Lenore arc in general, but to call it "somewhat unsubtle fetish material" would be like calling the Atlantic Ocean "a little big" and I'm not sure I needed to know that much about the sexual preferences of the guy who wrote Transmetropolitan

You could pretty much call the entire vampire gothic horror subgenre unsubtle fetish material, the only thing Ellis really did was flip the traditional gender dynamic

Yeah I don't read it this way.

But I guess I like to live in a world where writers can engage with porn as a genre rather than just as an act of self-pleasure.

Real talk I feel a game of thrones feeling like they're putting pieces into place for the thing they actually wanted to do and are sorta randomly throwing poo poo at the characters to keep the spectacle and sense of journey going for some reason? Like... you can almost feel the whiplash in writing with the judge character, Alucards b-plot bisexual romance gone wrong. Issac just kinda randomly bumping into 'cool poo poo we thought up' the whole thing feels like they wanted to follow the characters consistently with no skips even if a skip would work better narratively and now they're suffering for it. I feel like season one and two buckle together to form a pretty neat whole and now we're walking down the thread that connects to the next whole... hopefully, but its like... why bother spending a whole season on a thread... just get to the meat.

Also I want that vampire lady to step on my throat... and NOT the one you're thinking!

Alucard really got done dirty this season. Boring plot, boring characters, boring resolution. The best part of his whole subplot this season was when he was joking around with the little dolls he made, and that was like 5 minutes into his story. I'm hoping he joins back up with everyone next season so he can make fun of Trevor again.

I'd describe season 3 as misanthropic nihilism. Basically every edgy comic writer's favorite themes. Humanity is hosed, nothing matters then everything dies. The end.

Heck of a season for a franchise where you whip the wall and eat the meat stored there for health and get your weapon upgrades by hitting candles.

If the show follows even the basic guidelines of the games, Alucard doesn't "join up" with anyone until centuries from now. If their intent was to essentially write him out of the show by giving him a reason to become a near-suicidal recluse like he was by the time of Symphony of the Night, they certainly accomplished that.

This isn't to say that I don't want to see him again, he's definitely one of the more interesting characters in the shown on top of being a fan favorite, and adherence to canon certainly seems to be a low priority for Ellis. But I think he might mope around his castle for a while longer.

Chalalala~

I'm pretty sure Alucard said himself that he needs to get out of the castle and his own lonliness by the end of the season, so I can't see it lasting much longer regardless of what the games did. It doesn't seem like Ellis wants to move time forward and use new Belmonts or anything, so Alucard essentially has to meet back up with Sypha and Trevor again at some point to do something involving the infinite hallway, the Vampire sisters etc.

No? The end of the season is him staking corpses outside his house to make sure no one bothers him in the castle. That's literally the opposite.

How about a season exploring the rich society of the Fleamen.

Their industries, argiculture, and husbandry. And their symbiotic relationship with geese.

And then have the Styrian army roll over them and burn it all to the ground as part of their expansion.

Edit: Or maybe just have Trevor kill everybody.

In his game, Hector actually quit working for Dracula while he was still alive. He was kind of a dink who was only spurred back into action because Issac killed his girlfriend, and only went on to resolve the threat of the curse because Trevor got injured before he could do it himself. The show is pretty much loosely following the games while doing its own thing, which I'd say is a good way to adapt something.

Warren Ellis has famously never played the games, or indeed any video games since the early 80's, and derives the entirety of his knowledge of Castlevania from the wikipedia page entry and some art he likes from google image search. Everything that hews anywhere close to the game's universe comes from other people around him trying to interpret his written plot through the lens of their own knowledge of the games.

Which has worked surprisingly well so far.

Season 4 release date coming up?

I am the sexiest poster in the world!

I'd enjoy a new hero on the team throughout the season, whether that involved time-travel shenanigans or just deciding to pull a cool Castlevania protagonist out of their normal place in the timeline of the games and having them meet up with Trevor.

I'd take a "secretly alive somewhere" Belmont, of course, but I'd probably be most interested in seeing a character with a weird/unique gimmick or set of abilities that don't quite fit within that Belmont/Speaker magician/Vampire triangle we've seen already. Of course, Alucard coming back to team up with everyone again is a must as well.

Trevor should probably be captured by the vampire ladies as well, I have to imagine he'd turn his circumstances around in a cool way, and it'd be interesting to see how that dynamic plays out with both him and his captors, compared to how it went with the imprisoned forgemaster last season. Or maybe they do establish something like the breeding pen they want in an area, and Trevor goes undercover as a dirty peasant and takes out lots of Vampires/mercenaries there Solid Snake style.

Going by Castlevania 3, we are still missing Grant the Thief. He can climb walls I guess, until he cant any more and you fall in a pit.

His knife attack only sucked in the NA version, in the Japanese version, his attack was a projectile attack.

I know time has no meaning now, but we're only three months from the last season's launch and we had about 2 years between season 2 and 3. Ellis is kind of notorious for getting bored writing something and putting it on the back burner for a year or two.

I hope we can get at least two more seasons out of Ellis before he wanders off to write an amazing comic with an elongated ending. But it doesn't feel like my lifespan is long enough for that.
