(gameplay mechanic but not plot/identity spoiler, like CCCB's earlier post) The "unknown [role]" options in the passenger list are meant to mitigate this a bit; you can assign them when you know that someone's, e.g., a topman, but not which topman just yet, and then come back to them later when you can narrow down the name. Taking physical notes definitely helps, though!
