As I was exploring the town at the end, I started thinking this was some sort of "what if the monsters never got sealed underground" universe, but then I got to the flower shop and I saw the seven flowers. Now I have no idea how this relates to Undertale, chronologically/time-fuckily.

It has to be. The absolute proof of this can be found in the Library. There's an "anonymous" posting by Alphys that praises Mew Mew Kissy Cutie 2 and shits on the first one. There is no bigger sign we're in some kind of mirror universe..

Nah, he was mentioned by Sans, and you hear him inside his house.

Sans can rope you into befriending his brother with the right conversations. Also their house has a distant trousling of bones.

So the sequence explaining the legend specifically mentions the heroes "banishing the ANGEL'S HEAVEN."

The question is whose heaven is this? Is it Asriel's heaven or Chara's? Either could fit the description of the angel from the history of the delta rune, depending on your ending.

I really hope that Toby is going somewhere interesting with Chara at the end of the game because otherwise it kinda came off as pandering to the fans.

gaster was the chief scientist, right? wouldn't it make sense for the chief of puzzles to be the analogous gaster proxy

it's also somewhat likely that this is the way it ends since it's halloween and it'll be different for the full release

The mystery is the best part tbh, it's just fun to see the connections.

This was probably the funniest moment for me in the game:

So far all the Undertale analogues have been in the aboveground, though.

I'm honestly really curious to see where this thing goes. I think Toby had something in mind back when he was making Undertale. I know one of the random NPC in waterfall in the first game talks about how someday you might get to meet his neighbor's child, Suzy, and so people assumed Suzy was the monster kid's name until Toby tweeted that no, it's not. And it always sort of stuck in the back of my head, because why would he specify that instead of just letting it become fan headcanon?

there's already at least one

one of the shopkeepers knew Jevil and if you speak to him after trying (and failing) to beat the boss then he tells you a story about how Jevil met Gaster and apparently went mad from eldritch truths

there's a really strong vibe of inevitability and futility in this one, which is a sharp departure from the first game's optimism, not to mention the usual weird bits squirrelled away in the game's unused code

notably, there's "cut" dialogue featuring an unnamed character who's lost in a "dark place" and begging for someone to come help them in pretty much the same language Asriel/Flowey used

It's my one grievance with the game (as I've spent several posts talking about :v:) but it certainly makes me wonder what he's gonna do with the next chapter. Unless it's a mistake/joke/otherwise I'm sure he's got an interesting plan with it.

Other than the date, there's nothing that points to this is there? Also we don't even know if there will be a "full release", do we? Might be episodic, might be chapter 2 onward in a single game, might be chapter 1 onward (re)released.

On one hand, yeah, probably the biggest thing that appealed to me about Undertale (aside from the likable characters) was the relentless optimism and faith in the power of kindness, and that ending along with the sense of futility and lack of choice in this game seem to run quite counter to that. Chara was perhaps the least interesting part of Undertale, to me.

On the OTHER hand, Toby Fox has earned every bit of the benefit of the doubt from me so I am on board this hype train 100%

It's got me really interested to see if you can kill everything and get a genocide ending for chapter 1. I'm guessing not because no-ones mentioned it but I'm curious all the same.

the game says upfront that this time, nothing you choose will matter and you're unable to decide how you want to be in this world

the idea will probably be toyed with in the usual way in later chapters, but i think it holds true in this one, since the Fallen Child is literally keeping Kris' SOUL in a cage

Meeko

That's right! I'm the counting sheep, Meeko. And I'm a proper sheep youkai!

It's certainly a super strong opening for a sequel, and I'm definitely intrigued in what's to come out next, even if I'm a bit worried toby might've set up too many questions and cliffhangers.

It's kind of surprisingly defeatist overall. If you attack or spare doesn't matter at all - enemies bail regardless, you always get a 'pacifist end'. The plot goes to the same place, regardless. Not a single choice actually matters, in spite of all the secrets - and arguably your choices from the last game don't matter either, with the setting deliberately scrambled. The ending is always the same. Even the "kick your own rear end" machine always just blows up instead of being actually fought.

It's dark in other ways too. There's swearing. A guy almost kills his own drat son, and instead of the usual 'mercy will let you spare even the most determined boss,' instead he goes for a sucker punch and nearly murders you. And I feel like, almost on purpose, the entire game is set up to be JUST close enough to undertale to give you a warm fuzzy familiar feeling - then it tweaks it in just enough ways to make you feel uncomfortable, like something's wrong.

Definitely enjoyed it overall but I can't say i'm super fond of the darker parts, they somewhat horribly clash with the tone of the plot and the ending was a outright garbage cliffhanger. Wonder if it has anything to do with how much in the shitter the world's gone since 2015.
