I just had a thought.

Weird route You know when Ralsei tries to have Kris focus on Susie and Noelle to get a cutscene with them, but they don't do so and the cutscene is skipped?

I think Kris was deliberately refusing to send the SOUL in there because they didn't want Noelle to keep getting manipulated more than she already had been.

the impression I got from that was both times the game has switched to Susie's perspective, it has ended with Ralsei being cut off mid-sentence by Susie coming back, implying that Kris and Ralsei were having a conversation offscreen. if kris has a conversation offscreen, they are speaking as themselves and the player can't hear what they're talking about and can't interfere. in the evil route the soul doesn't let that happen because Kris is clearly not okay with what they're being forced to do and would try to ask for help.

RE: Gaster stuff
The voice that talks to us at the beginning of the game and the “stranger” that contacted Jevil and Spambot are definitely Gaster, or at the very least somehow related to him. The usage of Gaster’s Theme and smile.ogg is way too conspicuous to be just an easter egg.
Characters that speak with him seem to become hyper-aware of the fact that they have no control over their fate and become obsessed with finding freedom until they go insane. This might also be what’s driving Kris to open up dark fountains, they’re trying to find a way to break free.
Gaster may or may not be doing this maliciously, it’s impossible to say at this point since so much of him is shrouded in mystery, we don’t even know for sure if this is the same Gaster as the one who fell into the core in Undertale or an alternate universe version like with all the other returning NPCs.

All of this isn’t just *lore*, though, it ties into a recurring theme of the story where characters feel trapped.
Kris doesn’t just feel like they have no control over their life because there’s a literal bright red heart inside of them that’s deciding their every move. They’re a quiet teenager whose parents relatively recently went through a messy divorce, their older brother who they relied on for support has gone away to college, one of the only other real friends they had went missing (and Kris might even have been there when it happened and not been able to do anything to stop it), it would make any kid feel helpless.

Noelle has a strict and controlling mother, her sister has gone missing, and her father is in the hospital. She feels obligated to do whatever other people tell her and is too afraid to ever say no. She’s only comfortable in situations that make her feel like the danger isn’t real and she can leave whenever she wants to, like watching a horror movie. Rudolph himself knows what his daughter is going through and wants to help her but is confined to his hospital bed.

Berdly feels cornered by people’s expectations into being someone he knows deep down isn’t really him.
The King of Spades resented being locked away in an abandoned classroom and wanted to rule over the people that had imprisoned him. Lancer was torn between protecting his new friends and being afraid of disobeying his father, and his attempted solution was to imprison his new friends so that they wouldn’t get hurt.
We don’t know entirely what Susie’s deal is yet but she reflexively sees other people as threats, avoids responsibility like the plague, and doesn’t know how to put her guard down.
And Queen’s whole deal is that she wants to provide comfort to people who feel helpless, not realizing that what she’s actually doing is feeding into their anxieties and making their problems worse.

It’s fitting that the most morally repugnant thing you can do in the game (so far) isn’t just hurting people, it’s forcing someone else to hurt people.

I'm not entirely convinced Gaster is the one who hosed up Jevil and Spamton. Jevil and/or Seam make a reference to the knight being the one who made Jevil aware of his role

I don’t think this is said anywhere. Seam only mentions Jevil meeting a “special someone”. And Jevil’s only reference to the knight is to foreshadow that more dark fountains are going to be opened.

Zereth posted:

Did Noelle know there was somebody to hide it from? Ralsei definitely does.

Noelle didn’t even know there was something to hide, she has no idea what you’re talking about when you tell her to cast a spell called “Snowgrave”. Somehow you just automatically know she can use that spell once her ice magic becomes powerful enough to do it. Pretty creepy

Augus
Mar 9, 2015

Katsuma posted:

Also, regarding SnowGrave Noelle's firm insistence that she didn't know that spell read to me as less like ignorance of it, and more like denial. After all, she didn't have any such objections to IceShock. That girl can repress trauma with the best of them.

But that wouldn’t really make sense with her giving in and trying to cast it out of frustration and then being in shock at the results. And she hasn’t been in the dark world for that long, when would she have used it earlier? The whole sequence of freezing every enemy, getting the ring, getting the other ring is meant to power up Noelle’s ice magic to the point where she’s able to use this horrible, deadly spell. It’s not even possible to cast it if you do every single other step but then remove the thorn ring.

I would not have guessed in chapter 1 that Noelle would be the most horny-on-main character.

Extra fun fact, in chapter 1 Rudy includes Santas on the list of things Noelle is scared of. So hot female santas is her still just wanting a scary girlfriend.

it’s much more obvious that she has a crush if you pick an option besides “She’s nice” when Noelle asks you about Susie at the end of Chapter 1

what if the metafictional construct was given a personality and a backstory

All the people who still obsessed with game are exclusively unwell children and manchildren who are obsessed with the meta poo poo, in order, Chara, Gaster, Sans, Flowy and distant last Frisk. This is true of the last remaining tumblr blogs, reddit posts, 4chan threads, the only exception being twitter that is mostly just japanese artist still drawing porn of the spider girl.

Tumblr especially is a vivid example of this. Before Deltarune two parts stirred in fresh blood it was a solid 2/3 people "kining" Chara, or at minimum had thire face plastered all over the blog. All the big rear end essays are about Chara. And Gaster take a distant but soild second place.(okay a lot of that is Sans crying ABOUT Gaster but still)
