So, have you spent too much time and money on MLB The Show ultimate team, Madden, FIFA and NBA stuff?

Good news!

You can now spend too much time and money on a SPORTS SIM version of the above.

So, the Perfect Team beta is open, and here's some thoughts/information

1. THIS IS A BETA, it will be wiped at the end of beta (money purchased packs will refund PP for the main game)
2. You start in an "Entry League" with a base of 6 card packs of 6 players each. The cards that I saw in the beta were 2018 player cards, historic all-stars, historic unsung heroes
3. In the Entry League, you play one game per 30 minutes. No playing games, all simmed. Ever Monday, Entry League teams get promoted to the Rookie League, and then it's promotion and relegation after that (you stay in the Rookie League if you are horrible)
4. You start with 1,000 Perfect Team Points, and get more at least from acheivements (not sure if league performance in regular leagues will also give PTP.. kinda worried about the P2W nature there). Regular packs of 6 players cost 1,000 points, silver level costs 5,000. I'm not going to spend money on this probably unless things carry over to OOTP20 (which I doubt).
5. Current MLB players have photos looks like, while past players do not.
6. You can auction off Unneeded players, and buy players off the market. They have some filters (type of card, rating etcetera), but I would love a team-based filter, so I could grab as many Red Sox schlubs as possible ;)

My team:

Out of the 36 players I pulled, the four best players I pulled were historic allstars: 1953 Carl Furillo (Brooklyn), 1941 Roy Cullenbine (St Louis Browns), 1985 Carlton Fisk (Chicago), 2007 Placideo Polanco (Detroit).

My draws for pitching weren't too great: Three Bronze and two base players (65,65,62,59,51) while I had three pretty good players behind the plate (the 75 Carlton Fisk , along with 69 and 64.)

I earned 840 points from my first two games (From achievements for winning a game, saving a game, Home Run, and quality start for 200 each, and a "womp womp" acheivement for one of my players who stranded the bases loaded of 40 points)

So, I pulled one pack with my base 1,000 points, and pulled a gold player which was really lucky, Unfortunately it's another @*)_$&@*)$%&@)$% Catcher (2018 JT Realmuto, ranked at 80).

Looks interesting so far.

So I'm in on this as well despite not knowing anything about Baseball really and only having OOTP for about 2 weeks. I managed to win the 2019 World Series with the Twins so I'm probably more knowledgeable than 50% of MLB front offices.

My team is currently 13-4 which I suspect is down to getting Mark McGwire.

My team is 32-44 (you get 48 games a day with the sim every 30 minutes in entry mode)

My starting five has a COMBINED WAR of 1.7, and I can see why. Here's their ERA's in order

6.20
5.69
6.32
3.66
4.60

Since you slowly earn PP with repeatable acheivements, I've pulled a couple packs. Pulled JT Realmuto, who is my second highest player (80), but that was a position I already had good depth at (Catcher, with Carlton Fisk). I need starteing pitching as my team still has 3 base-level players, and two of them are in my starting rotation :P

I picked up a new pack this morning and got Barry Bonds. I should change the name of my team to BALCO Mutants.

I'm 26-12 before sticking Bonds into the lineup. I've been more fortunate with the starting pitchers I have with 1 Gold (Glavine, Braves 1991), 1 Silver (Cone, Royals 1994), and 2 Bronzes (Arrieta from the Phillies and 'Unsung Hero' Bob Buhl from 1957).

My rookie league has started (monday's the league reset day).

Managed to get a couple bronze pitchers fairly cheap through the auction so I'm 4-4 on the new season.

The Pristina Cevapcici are currently 10-3. My #1 Pitcher, Glavine has a 4-0 record, Barry Bonds has hit zero homers so far, McGwire has 2.

So I'm currently running 60-48, 1/2 a game back in the Division and looking good for a playoff spot currently. I ditched Bonds as he was a bit of a defensive liability and the 20,000 points gave me a load of packs, one of which included Historical All-Star LF Cliff Yastrezemski who is rated 96. I've also switched McGwire to DH as he couldn't defend either.

UPDATE

Lost in the Championship Series game in the Rookie League after winning the division handily. Got promoted to A league ball along with a few others from my Rookie League (more than 4 so I'm not sure what they did for promotion).

Currently smashing things up with a 41-17 record, leading the division by 10.5 games and the 2nd best record in the league.

I'm enjoying Perfect Team more than I thought. I like that it just runs without me having to remember to do anything and I can just login and collect my winnings whenever I get around to it.

I also like that this is like a video game version of Let's Remember Some Guys

It seems like the best way to spend points is to bank them and then buy the best player you can afford at auction? Packs give me like 1 useable player each time...

That's the way I've been playing it. As time goes on the price for Gold & Diamond level players seems to be dropping so I think I'll be able to round out my roster so the lowest OVR is 80 in the next couple of weeks. Once I'm at that point then I will go back to buying packs instead of using the auction house as there's always the possibility of pulling the 'Perfect' cards which are still crazy prices (and I expect will remain that way) at auction. I did get a 100 OVR Barry Bonds card from a pack in the beta.

EDIT

Here's my current roster. All the starters are now at least 80 OVR.

Is this the thread for si Glenn player OOTP too? Cause I just had a weird season.

I went into the year with five outfielders that I didn't know how to lineup: a 22 yr old Chili Davis, 21 yr old Pete Browning, 22 yr old Ty Cobb, 20 yr old Mike Tiernan, and 21 yr old Carlos Beltran. My league was still in the mid 30s. Anyway... I was certain I would have 3 all-star outfielders.

I ended up with none lol. I still won the pennant, but the best WAR anyone put up was Davis at 4.1. The real story of my year was that Kevin Seitzer put up 2.3 WAR on 192 plate appearances because I used him as a leftie platoon and he OPS+ed 198 against lefties lol.

I know this is the OOTP thread but, since the other thread is closed, I just got a newsletter from the BBM developer explaining that his game is always free to active military members. If you have an active *.mil email account, I guess you just use a coupon code.

BBM is pretty fun and it's the foundation for the entire Super League.

https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3499603

quote:

Hi Folks!

This email is just a reminder that Baseball Mogul and Football Mogul are free for all active members of the U.S. military (as designated by a valid ".mil" e-mail address). I’ve had this policy in place for more than a decade, and have no plans to discontinue it. However, I’m not very good at publicizing it -- so please spread the word.

To download either game, service members can "purchase" one or both games from www.sportsmogul.com. During checkout, click ‘Add a coupon code’, enter ‘MILITARY’ and click ‘Apply’. This will reduce the price for all downloads by 100%.

The new Out of the Park Baseball is out, and it has the Perfect Team mode.

I mention this because I randomly drew a 2005 Mariano Rivera closer card from a single baseline pack (1,000 coins, solely earned through ingame acheivements). I promptly then sold it for 105,000 Perfect Team Points. Depending on if the higher rank bonus perfect point purchases are permanent, that means someone paid the equivalent of $70-$100 for a bit of electronic bits for a game that not many will play after a full year.

I mean, I know that people will overpay to get this type of card because it's a big name (and a Yankee, so Yankee fans will pay extra to have them on their perfect team), but Rivera isn't even the highest ranked closer type of card in the game currently (There are the standard Unranked, Bronze, Silver, Gold, then Diamond (Rivera's level, a 96), and then Perfect (100 rated, like Rob Dibble at his filthiest).

I'm... ambivalent about this. I mean, it's kinda fun and cool to be able to get the best players from the Auction House, but... is this our future?

(the reason for the fluctuation in the value is that the game offers 50,000 Perfect Team Points for $50 with a bonus of 25,000 PTP on purchase.)

It's already the present, let alone the future. It's too financially rewarding to not prioritize.

I dunno if 20 is different but the way most people i know did PG in 19 was to just play a couple good players but otherwise field a crap team so yoi could ignore the game and grind up currency in a bronze league until you had enough currency to buy another good player.

Okay so say there's someone who wants to get into baseball sims and has watched a lot of baseball, but is stupid as gently caress and doesn't know poo poo about how to actually run a clubhouse. Are there guides out there to get someone up to speed and at least able to complete a rudimentary season? I have tried a couple older sims at one time or another and grew up playing Strat-o-Matic, but the only clubhouse management I did back then was trading players to friends like Pokemon cards.

I've found that in-game tutorials are helpful when it comes to wrangling the UI, but not particularly helpful in actually approaching a baseball sim as a whole. This is kind of expected because the majority of people who play sports management sims already mostly know what they're doing, but I'd like to learn more about baseball considering that there isn't any being played right now

Basically for ootp you want to balance salaries with pros and cheap minor league players/prospects. So if you were playing the Marlins who have a pitiful payroll and a poo poo roster you'd want to try to desperately jettison every high cost player, spend on high potential low overall players that cost less but might turn into something more, and build your team through a ton of good draft picks because you'll be picking high because the Marlins suck. Meanwhile during all this you want to go to your coaching screen and find good scouts, trainers, and a scouting GM. That way you're more sure the players you're picking up are good and they stay healthy. If you were to play a team like the Dodgers or Yankees you can be more liberal with signing big contracts and trading away your prospects for good players because you can tank the salary costs. OOTP does punish you though and you don't have endless money to spend so you pretty much have to always have a good pipeflow of young talent to replace expensive players.

This game is also random as gently caress. Just like in baseball players that are good can drop off a cliff and players that are bad can have ridiculous outlier seasons. Like Dee Gordon's rated 42 out of 80 (I use 20 to 80 scale instead of stars) but he hit .421 with 76 stolen bases for me one year. Inversely I can't tell you how many times a player I've spent big money on instantly drops off for no good reason or becomes horrifically injured with no injury history. But it's still kind of consistent and usually if you have say four pitchers that are all rated 55 out of 80 in your starting rotation at least one will develop into a good pitcher. Injuries also matter. On regular settings your team will constantly get injured even with the best trainers so you gotta build depth too. Make sure your bullpens are deep, you have spare arms down in AAA that could realistically come up and pitch in a major league game, and good fielder depth. Usually you can find specialists for cheap that are either really good fielders or decent batters.

Outside of that building a team is up to you. The sims all about seeing what would happen if you got all the fastest contact hitters on one team or had 5 aces with a great bullpen and amazing defenders but no hitters. Just don't get sucked into the multiplayer, it's stupid.

I have been having a real blast with OOTP, with the exception of hopping on their Discord to ask a couple questions about how stuff works I've been simming leagues and seasons like a madman.

But I have to apologize for my sins, sweet Doltos. The multiplayer......it's good imo

Most insane game seven I've ever seen in this game or in general. Had a perfect going with Michael Kopech that was broken up by a Keirmaier walk in the ninth and then Kopech tears his UCL on the next pitch so I have to complete the no-hitter with my random closer. Imagine having one of the best pitching games of all time only to see it fall apart on a 3-1 walk and then a torn UCL.

CF/SS/C in the first four rounds if possible. Nab a gold SP, maybe a silver SP too, but you can mostly leave the rest of your rotation and bullpen to irons. You need to have that CF/SS defense bigtime and a catcher with a good C position rating and Catcher Ability rating. Other than that, it's all up to you. After that I'd probably go 2B, RF, 1B, 3B, LF in order of importance, with 3B/LF being less good at defense and more good at mashing the baseball. Avoid K is probably the most important thing for those players.

Anyway my opinion is probably worthless because my PD teams are dogshit and never seem to get past the second round. C'est la vie
