Eh, Pete had to eat some crow and he did it like a Fear Factor champ.

Crenshaw was a good sport and as an elected official he had to give a morality speech, even if his military background allowed him to tell a few blue jokes. A bit of a buzzkill but Update was solid so I needed a come-down. :sweatdrop:

Liev Schreiber rules and is handsome as gently caress. He was great in Sphere, and more recently stole the show in both of the Goon films, IMO. I haven't yet seen this new show that got him the hosting spot tonight, but it sounds awesome. Schreiber's half-brother Pablo is also a fantastic actor.

I thought the LCdr Dan Crenshaw cameo on Weekend Update was about as fun as it could have been. I wish the guy had (or more accurately, was able to express) more of a sense of humour about it but as someone already pointed out, it's Veterans'/Remembrance Day so what can you do?

Permission was hysterical. I want to see the return of Uncle Butt, and Wayne's verse was legitimately good. The beat was a lot weaker than it could have been though. Who writes the music for these kinds of sketches? Are they still paying Jorma and Kiv for beats?

While I'm at it, all these name-drops for popular films/TV shows/apps are really dumb product placement, right? Ant-Man? Blue Apron?

I think I must live under a rock or something because I missed that whole mess with Crenshaw last week. Why were people all offended, because he has a visible disfigurement? Because hitman in a porno movie is a decently funny one-liner.

That said I guess it made me look up his platform and at least he was raised in Latin America and has a...decently good! idea of how to curb illegal immigration. Fewer walls, more infrastructure investments. Cool.

It wasn't because of the "hitman in a porno movie" line, as far as I have gathered, the improvised line "He lost his eye in a war or whatever" from Pete was considered disrespectful. :patriot:

He spent a week crying about how he ~doesn't want an apology~ (but keep booking me on shows so I can cry about this please) and that distracted people from his insane anti abortion, anti minority, anti basically anything progressive, platform so it was a win-win but SNL still had to lick boot because that's how they do.

I'm in Texas and can tell you Crenshaw is exactly one of those huge 'everyone's so EASILY OFFENDED these days...what's that you made a light comment about me? HOW DARE YOU' pussies that infest the right.

The faux outrage is because they didn't want anyone to realize that just like anyone else with access to decent healthcare Crenshaw has a glass eye. He conveniently started wearing an eye patch as soon as he wanted to lean on his war injury to get elected.

I mean I didn't see the delivery, but both of those seem like funny lines to me, especially the latter. I can see how it'd piss off some people, but just seems like standard comedy fare to me.

I will say I'm looking forward to Davidson going back to just being a regular member of the cast and not garnering mainstream attention outside the show, though conversely if I was in his shoes I'd be leaning way into making that happen as much as possible.

I suppose it would be a hell of a gag if he pops up as himself in next week's update to comment on some crazy as hell story about him that isn't real, seems like you could make some hay out of that for a week after how things have gone lately.

Hey, thanks for this actually. For my part, I kind of saw him as your generic social-conservative generally-okay? Latin candidate of a decade or two ago but if you're a Texan who actually knows I'm more than happy to listen. I'm a New Englander on the west coast who has to both explain why Vermont is beyond happy to re-elect its Republican governor, don't you worry it's Vermont here, but also Susan Collins is a loving traitor. Not a Republican, really, a traitor. Lieberman was never a Republican but he pulled the same poo poo (Connecticut, of course).

Party politics can get weird when you get local and in our weary times, I'm still a bit of a dumb optimist where I can find a reason.

Tonight’s Vintage is from season 4, episode 4, Steve Martin with Van Morrison, OAD 1978.11.04, Martin’s sixth time hosting. A solid episode, not too much to cut here. I don’t usually do this, but I’m gonna guess what bits will make the cut.

Cold open, monologue, Theodoric of York, Van Morrison performs “Kingdom Hall,” an edited Weekend Update, Van Morrison performs “Wavelength,” Elvis’ Coat, Annoying Waiter, Goodnights

One final note: The bumpers that night were neat, a series of extreme close-ups of Martin’s face, and most of them may or may not be seen tonight, as sometimes they source the DVD/streaming cuts for these Vintage airings. So here is a ridiculously tiny collection of them from the SNL Transcripts site

Well, I nailed everything up through the edited WU. Boofed the back half. I didn't foresee them editing Festrunk Brothers and The Nerds to fit into the time allotted (the last minute or so was trimmed off Festrunks, and a big chunk at the start of Nerds was excised.) Well-played, SNL

On the other hand, we got a few of the bumpers :buddy:
