i remember during the war when the german blockade stopped all imports from the colonies. our ration coupons included the so-called "victory grass", some disgusting weed substitute i can still hear dad coughing up his lungs in the living room, trying all manners of ways to get high from it |

back then we didn't have all this newfangled electronomics you kids like to play around with grandma here used to work in a posting central, didn't you dear? all posts had to go through the land line during those days you see. the women working there were responsible for connecting the right post to the right thread. i remember all the gossip you used to bring home, ah, those were the days *grandkids left long ago* |

back then everybody wore a sig. not just in byob, everywhere. it wasn't just a fashion statement, being sigless in public was like being naked. saying you had sigs off marked you as a pervert, and was legal grounds for divorce.

Back then the highest number you could rate a thread was 2.

What was it like? Ah, child, come and float upon the bubbles with me. Look around you, look at the world falling away beneath you and know this: nothing has changed, and nothing will ever change. Also there used to be more cartoon porn. |

I remember we used to have deletion drills at least once a week. Huddled under our threads, clutching our favorite posts. The fear was terrible, but in a way, it brought us together. "We'll be ok. We'll get through this," ol' Robby Williams used to say, and he was right. Mostly. |

I remember when BYOB was first created. It was a glorious day; truly beautiful. It was a place where you could just chill out and and post white noise poo poo posts all day. As long as you weren't being a jerk it was just like, hey, have fun, post whatever stupid crap comes to your mind, nobody cares. It doesn't even affect your post count! It wasn't negative; it wasn't positive. It just was.
I'm sewage flavored. |

there used to be a weed rear end back in them times, before all these Wednesday frogs and weed wolves started gentrifying the forum. I can remember it clear as day back then treasure bear was called Cumt and he once captured footage of in the wild and shared it with all of the yob. still brings a tear to my eye |

In the beginning, there was a YOB. Not a YOB like we are now, no, much much smaller, and around it there was nothing. All of a sudden, with a poof of smoke and a froggy croak the forums began to expand. Well, you might be wondering, if there was nothing but this tiny YOB, what did it expand into? And the answer is, nothing. It didn't expand into SOMETHING, it *was* the SOMETHING, and as it expanded it simply made more. Within a few milliseconds the YOB was large enough to contain a small rules thread. Within a minute there was a Welcome and a Hello, though the & Chat would come much later. Slowly, with a calm patience, the expanding YOB cooled, and became a chill place. When the humans came and colonised the YOB, well, that was really the birth of the BYOB. Where did that other B come from, you ask? We brought our own. |

It was, frankly, a staggering confluence of people in a relatively small area, with a force of impact on the world of which no small group of people will probably have again. Every day saw the best and brightest minds constantly engaged in spirited debate. Artists, philosophers, poets, thinkers and creatives of all kinds would camp a table long into the night, only to be back at it in the early morning over coffee in the venerable café thread. We worked, of course -- freelance copyediting, pieces for patrons of the arts, whatever we could find to keep us mobile -- but the focus was the Work - be it art or more academic pursuits. Ah, my memories paint a canvas with vivid shades of emotion, from profound elation to quiet fear of just what these ideas, unleashed on the world would do. We'd all go on to change the world in many ways, but I'd like to think all those movers and shakers remember their roots in those quiet, shared moments together, perhaps having just looked at a new photoshop unveiling together or taking a moment to consider someone's new thread title. |

The Walls of History still echo with the laughter of our glorious victories and lay silent with the sound of our defeats. Silent for there were no defeats, you see. We were immortals then, the world was like unto a block of clay, and we were the sculptors; a DaVinci here- a Rodin there- and if you looked closely, the truly observant would be rewarded with a Dickbutt or Goatse. Today we live in the Twilight of our Yesteryear, but any day now the Portal will open and we will all go back and do it all over again. We are all trapped in the Vortex, we start at the top and spiral our way down like a thread, and we read and or post our way down, only to begin again at the top of the next page. Or onto the next post. Or even onto a new thread... https://i.imgur.com/QKTkerO.mp4 |
