Wake up, thread!

Here is something a lot different from your typical ukulele videos that I thought was really cool:

If that was your first Taimane video then definitely check out more of her stuff, I have been learning from her videos for years and years:

Not bad! This sounds like the playing of someone who is about to break out of the absolute beginner stage and will be strumming easily soon. I would say try relaxing your wrist a bit more but it's hard to tell from just hearing it. Your rhythm is good and the chord progressions will get easier over time. You will get plenty of mileage out of learning just the major and minor chords for now. E major was a tricky one for me, sometimes I still cheat and play E minor instead.

Here is a great beginner song to learn: http://ukuleletab.net/i/iz/white-sandy-beach/ Don't worry about the fancy picking, you can strum like this: D, D U, U D U over and over

Someone talk me out of buying a solid top 8-string. My soprano is kinda small and I'd like a bit more everything in the sound.

If you get a decent tenor ukulele with some Aquila Nylgut strings you might get all the sound you've been looking for. Sopranos are great for strumming chords but I would say a tenor is more versatile. Personally I have been eye-balling some 5-string tenors to get some more oomph from the G string.

Thanks! I don't play as often as I should, but I started learning about picking and tabs and incorporating picking is definitely next after learning the major chords better. The hardest part is still switching between the less common ones.

The book I have for this stuff often has like....E♭maj7 or B♭, or F7 and my fingers are just like "what the gently caress are you trying to do? pick simpler chords" :xd:

Yeah I've been thinking of going up to a tenor. I've been looking at videos and eight-strings have that folksy jangle that I think I'd really enjoy, but it's hard to find one to try out.

Extremely grim and evil.
I just finished putting low-G strings on the Cordoba tenor I bought a few days ago and can offer the following two observations:
1.) Low G is awesome
2.) Restringing a uke sucks rear end

"That's right. We've evolved."

"I can see that. Cool mutations."

I got a tenor ukulele earlier this year, just to have another instrument to noodle around on. Something I've really been enjoying is this book called "Arpeggio Meditations for the Ukulele". It's a series of exercises teaching finger picking, but they're all just really chill and pleasant pieces of music, which you play over and over in a loop. I've been playing some to my newborn, and he seems pretty into it.

https://liveukulele.com/reviews/arpeggio-meditations-for-ukulele-daniel-ward

It's not even in bookstores, though - when I ordered it, it was from the author's own site, and came hand-mailed from California.

Anyway, would recommend.

Thanks for that, I managed to grab one just before they fixed the price and it just arrived. I'll edit this post after I've played it a bit.

edit: So far I'm liking it, this is a very well-made uke although mine has a few tiny cosmetic issues on the fretboard. The tuners seem to have some quality and the extra strings really bring out some sounds I'm not used to hearing. Playing with a pick is going to be interesting. I'd say this is worth the full price. If I didn't like it I was going to sell it on FB marketplace but for now I think I'll keep it. :unsmith:

I just threw a track together on it and figured I should share it, also featuring my Kala U-Bass. I had to play really quietly though so it's not the best.

Forgot to update! So, it's an interesting instrument. Can't really do fingerpicking the same way though you could probably figure something out, so it's mainly for strumming. Definitely a louder, fuller sound, it's like being accompanied by another couple of ukes. I can see it being good for a singalong or something, but I'd still go for a normal uke for most uke needs. Definitely not something I would want to pay full price for (I can't say it sounds better tonally than my $150 uke, which itself doesn't sound three times better than a $50 uke), but for what I paid I'm not sore about it. Definitely looks very nice.

I also had some minor imperfections on the side of the base of the fretboard, not really noticable.

Oh hey, a uke thread! I didn't know that we had such a thing. I love the uke, and use mine on tracks all the time. Had a sort of running ukulele group when I was in Frankfurt and now that I've moved to Okinawa I'm looking to set up the same thing here.

Aw man, I want a uke group too. :smith:

But that sounds cool! What kind of stuff do you use the uke for?

I often use it just to sort of strum and sing, as in:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDhTbRTZuWg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqYcfd814e0

But that's sort of traditional indie folk stuff. I use it in some sorta unusual contexts as well. Here's me trying to make it work in a fuzzed-out rock song with, I would say, partial success.

https://soundcloud.com/danwarren/wannabe

But I think my most favorite thing to use it for is to do a sort of fingerpicked high line to accompany guitars. Like this:

Last week I picked up one of these and it's making me wish I had gotten a baritone sooner. I decided to finally record something today, and while it wasn't perfect I thought it came out pretty well overall, I love the tone on this thing:

We had our first sort of attempt at a uke group last night and it was a lot of fun despite some organizational pitfalls. Specifically that several people did not have ukuleles and that everyone was trying to read the music off of their phones instead of printing it out which, you'll be interested to learn, absolutely sucks. We nevertheless managed to work our way through Wrecking Ball, What's Up (by Four Non Blondes), and halfway through a Japanese song called Milk and Coffee.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rt2dGt29SSU

The key change in the middle proved too much; most of the participants had never played uke before.

Anyway, having hashed out those issues we are aiming to do it again in two weeks with a larger group.

My Mom got a Cordoba 15CM concert uke but doesn't like how narrow the neck is. I have an Amahi concert uke with a slightly wider neck that she prefers. Is there another brand of uke out there that might have an even slightly wider neck? In either concert or tenor.

Stoca Zola

I bought a cheap Enya laminate beginner uke (The X1 pineapple shaped one) based at least partly on how wide the neck is. Not sure how it compares or if Enya's other ukes also have wide necks but maybe worth a look?

I bought the pineapple Enya too and can recommend it for a beginner also. It's got a great tone for such a cheap construction, it sounds deeper than a Kala soprano, a bit closer to my Kala concert actually, but projects a bit less, not as loud even with my Aquila reds on it which give it more punch than the flurocarbons it came with. It's very comfortable to play, I don't have the biggest hands and I find the wider neck a bonus on a soprano sized ukulele, and the wider body is easier for me to hold onto without a strap but you do get strap buttons on this uke which is fantastic.

If you get it with the standard pack there are some pretty nice goodies and a good bag with it, it's not a bad deal at all, although picks with a uke?!

hey i recently got a tenor guitar (little 4 string guitar) in that perfect 5ths tuning, and i really like how it sounds! i didnt know you could buy special uke strings for that tuning.

if you find that you are into this tuning, maybe check out tenor guitar?

Those seem really cool too. I guess they made them originally so banjo players could double on guitar parts easily?

not sure -- could be! there is also the "Plectrum Guitar," which is the same kind of instrument, but with a longer scale length (26+ inches). i guess the tenor guitar tends to be shorter-scale than that

I love that I've been playing music for like 30 years and I'm still constantly learning about new instruments. Btw, If you ever get the chance and you are in Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona you should check out the Music Instrument Museum. They have like every type of instrument possible and you can listen to them all and play a few of them.

TBH I'd just rather get a mandolin, the point of it is to explore the tuning and there are aspects to a mandolin that a ukulele or a tenor guitar won't approximate. Although that guitar does sound like it could be filling the gap left by a lute. I'd love to have a lute but its very hard to get one and it costs $$$. Perhaps you should look into lute tunings and see where that takes you.

well in my case, i was looking for something with pickups like an electric guitar so i could play thru an amp with effects pedals, etc.

but i would agree with preferring a real mandolin for acoustic playing, especially for playing actual bluegrass music.
