My mom won't stop using the black skinned emojis when texting. We've told her to stop but she thinks it's cute to say "I was black in another life" and doesn't get why that's kind of offensive for an old white lady to say. But she's 71 years old and I'm not going to argue about it. Beyond that, I kind of realize that this is what's it's like to be trolled by a 71 year old white lady.

My dad went from being a well educated, "Look at both sides of the argument before making a decision" kind of guy, to reading nothing but breitbart and watching fox news 24/7. I blame the internet for his rapid shift from occasionally stubborn to straight up willfully ignorant.

My parents both retired in the last year and have definitely gotten more in touch with online culture. I went to dinner with them last week and my dad asked me if I'd seen "This online skeleton thing called The Share Zone where he makes fun of idiots." My dad was always kind of into weird internet stuff but this felt really bizarre. On the other hand one branch of my wife's cousins is constantly on facebook posting stuff like "SEX TRAFFICKERS ARE HIDING IN WALMART BATHROOMS TO CAPTURE YOUR CHILD" and "JESUS CHRIST DIED ON THE CROSS FOR YOU, ARE YOU WILLING TO SHARE THIS MESSAGE FOR HIM?".

Dad isn't interested in memes and stuff like that, but he's been way into right-wing blogs for years. He has recently gotten into Scott Adams, who he thinks is a visionary.* When I last visited his house he had a copy of 12 Rules for Life on a side table. I consider him a lost cause and just want to minimize the impact of his brain worms on my own life. *He is not, Scott Adams is dumb just like everybody else who's mastered a narrow field of inquiry and assumes that makes them an expert in everything

I am the only Online person in my family and I'm pretty happy about that. I use facebook to sell car parts I don't need anymore and every single time people will give me lowball offers, like I'm asking 300 for a set of 1200cc injectors that cost 750 new and some oval office will msg have you still got this and I'll say yes oval office and he'll offer 100 today and I'll say yes oval office and give him the address of the local coles then later he's angery msging me and I'm like sry wrong addy and give him the address of woolies also half the time people never show up so lol

My dad has been a prolific alt right troll since the 90's. I have an email account just to deal with him and its quite a sight. My dad honestly is more trump than trump is. Trumps twitter is a lot like receiving a text message from dad lol. It never loving makes sense it's just a general wail that something he didnt like happend. Like wow i just recieved a somehow racist rant about how the moon is loving hollow and then you call and it turns out he got a flat tire and the discount tire guy looked like a liberal.

I've been able to scare a lot of my family away from social media by telling them nothing they ever do on there will be private. The people in my family who enjoy drama will occasionally start poo poo on there because of course that's what they do. I laugh at them for using facebook but they ignore me because I am seen as a grouch. It's blissful ignorance not knowing who or how many family members use minion memes.
