Fighter Pits beneath Broken Spire Arena - Curst - The Outlands

It's been 3 days since the solitary slave cells started to be filled up. Little by little the band of outcasts came, brought by Curst's guards in chains, first the Aasimar, a turtle and a crow humanoid that puzzled and amused the guards, a tiefling, and finally an half-elf and human. To the spellcasters a cruel-looking muzzle was chained around their head, so any kind of spellcasting was discouraged.

Any memory of your rebirths are confusing as expected, you remember waking up with your body in pain, feeling extremely weakened. You noticed the huge rusty walls of Curst ahead of you, in the middle of a wasteland. Unfortunately you noticed the hooded figures coming at your direction too late, whispering words of power, until you became unconscious yet again.

Your time on the Pits was a perplexing one, most of you expected cruelty from the guards, but they simply executed their tasks without saying anything, refusing to answer any questions as they delivered the daily grub and water to your cells.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today however, you know something is different as your hear a lot of footsteps come in the direction of your cells. Two squads of guards appear, decked in a full plate suit, rusty and cruel-looking.
They begin to unlock the cells one by one, put you in manacles and escort you out single-file, until you reach a large armory room, filled with scattered miscellaneous pieces of leather and a few pieces of plate here and there, and a couple of weapons that definitely have seen a lot of use in their lives. Ark notices his old thunder cannon near a score of crossbows, with a single look you know it is in a utter state of disrepair, barely capable of firing two shots.
One of the guards grunts "Don't be tryin' anything stupid now." as they begin to unshackling the manacles, and unlocking the muzzles of the party. You notice that some of the guards tense up, great-axes firm in their hands the whole time.
After that is done he glances towards the armory's stock and back to the party. "Suit up and arm yourselves. You Reborn are fighting today. One of the Hoarites be coming soon, talk to ya a bit. And again, don't try anything loving stupid."
Another guard chuckles and looks at Dagat. "Make sure to give us a good show, freak. I'm betting half my pay on you, hah!" Other guards join in the laugh before a sharp glance from their senior shuts them up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Welcome to the game! This is the first time for the six of you to actually take a look to measure each-other up, and have a talk if you so desire.

Armor available: Gladiator Pieces, Light Armor, 11 AC with a maximum Dex modifier of +3

Weapons available: Greatclub, Greataxe, Flail, Trident, Shortsword, Whip, Dagger, Light and Heavy Crossbows, an Artificer Thunder Cannon that will definitely break after firing two shots.

Ark

The guards choose to ignore your grunt-question, only continuing to give you the stink-eye. Unsurprisingly, being a tiefling with bat-wings doesn't make you popular with guards, even if you didn't do anything to them (yet).

Marbles

An old main's voice coming from Marble's mouth startles one of the guards a bit. The other ones try to keep themselves as stoic as possible, but you know a couple of them can't help but watch you and your tricks.

Broken Spire Arena's Armory - Curst - The Outlands

Soon after the combatants are ready and armored you hear a ridiculously loud sound of metal plates clanking together down the hallway. "Oh, here he comes now." one of the guards say, as they shuffle to stand at attention.

A massive plated juggernaut of a warrior barely fits through the door and barges in.

You cannot even begin to guess what sort of creature could be inside such a thing. Shuffling behind it, a small construct of some sort appears and begins to scope out the party.

When it stares at each party member sounds of machinery working spill out *BRRRRRR* *WHIRRR*, and a piece of parchment spills out from his chest, his small hands catching them before it drops to the ground. Before you can ask what's going, a booming voice comes from the helmet of the creature in front of you, his hand not holding the glaive gesticulating wildly.

"REBORN OF HOAR!!!

YOU WHO TASTED THE BITTERNESS OF BETRAYAL AND INJUSTICE!!!!

YOU WHO DIED AND HAVE RISEN AGAIN IN THE OUTLANDS, THIRSTY FOR RETRIBUTION!!!

TODAY YOU WILL SHOW THE DOOMBRINGER IF YOU WERE WORTHY OF BEING SAVED!!!

TODAY YOU FIGHT IN THE BROKEN SPIRE ARENA!!!! PREPARE YOURSELVES AND FOLLOW ME!!!!"

It begins to turn around towards the armory's exit, the idea that you would have questions about the situation not even passing through his head.

Broken Spire Arena's Corridor, heading to the arena elevator.

The juggernaut glances back at Ark's after his comment before continuing on. "HMPH! YES, THERE IS A SUITABLE REWARD IF YOU'RE VICTORIOUS, FIENDBLOOD, IF THAT IS YOUR ONLY INTEREST... BEING ALLOWED TO SHOW VICTORY TOWARD HOAR AFTER HIS GIFT SHOULD BE REWARD ENOUGH, BUT I DON'T MAKE THE RULES. WHY, WHEN I WAS A HUMBLE EXECUTIO-" His rambling is cut short by Marble's almost-perfect imitation of his voice, which startles him.

Both he and the construct look back at the kenku. "HOW DID YOU- OH NO" he says as he looks down as the modron moves up to Marbles and then stay right at his side. "GREAT, IT NOW THINKS YOU ARE ANOTHER ME. DO NOT CONFUSE THE DUODRONE FURTHER THEY CAN'T HANDLE COMPLEX SITUATIONS." It then keeps going between the two masters, his Mindlessly Tagging Along protocols being perfectly divided between them.

Dagat's comment doesn't phase the juggernaut. "I AM NOT SURPRISED. EVEN IN MY HOME PLANE HIS WORSHIP WASN'T WELL KNOW. THE DETAILS YOU DESIRE SHALL BE REVEALED IN THE FUTURE, BUT TRUST IN THE DOOMBRINGER IF YOU DESIRE VENGEANCE!"

I'll move forward later tonight or tomorrow, want to give a chance for people to post if they want.

Earl Kettler

"SILENCE!!! BY THE GODS MAN, DO YOU LISTEN TO YOURSELF? SAVE YOUR QUESTIONS FOR LATER! YOU CALL YOURSELF A CHOSEN OF THE LORD OF THE DEAD? WHEN YOU MEET MY LORD, OCTAVIMUS, *THEN* YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT A CHOSEN IS LIKE."

The Emissary

At the question, the warrior turns around, makes his free hand into a fist and slams it hard against his chest. The reverberations of the impact echo through the corridor and make the party's teeth tingle. "I AM HULDRAK, RIGHT-HAND OF LORD OCTAVIMUS, CHOSEN OF HOAR AND FAIR RULER OF CURST. I SERVE AS HIS TOOL OF VIOLENCE, MASSACRING ANYONE WHO DARES TO ESCAPE JUSTICE. MY GLAIVE BROUGHT DOWN THE DRAGON MALDRAEDIOR AND THE HOUSEHOLD OF RAVENCREST OF NEVERWINTER!"

When the party and Huldrak finally begin to approach the rustic-looking elevator to the arena, you can already hear the shouts from the crowd coming from above. Two guards open the metal doors to the cage you six will walk inside.

Huldrak turns to face the party again, and this time he grabs the duodrone with his free hand, so it can't follow Marbles to battle. "YOU STAY WITH ME, UNIT X78IUQ." He then clears his throat. "THE TWO YOU ARE ABOUT TO FACE REPRESENTS JUST A TASTE OF THE THREATS YOU'LL FACE IN THE CENTER OF THE MULTIVERSE. ONE TURNED MAD FROM THE INJUSTICE THAT HAPPENED TO HIS DRUID CIRCLE, AND ANOTHER THAT LEFT A TRAIL OF BLOODSHED IN SIGIL'S LOWER WARD. TAKE YOUR LESSONS FROM IT AS YOU PROVE YOURSELVES TO HOAR. I SAY NO MORE." and surprisingly he keeps to his word, and your eardrums breathe with relief.

After the last member enters the elevator cage, the door is shut down behind them. Gears begin to grind as the cage is pulled up, above you see the daylight for the first time in awhile. Another booming voice comes from above.

"AND NOW, THE EVENT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR! CAN THE REBORN OF HOAR SURVIVE AND SEIZE VICTORY AGAINST ALL ODDS? OR WILL THEY BE *SLAUGHTERED* BY THE DEADLIEST SCUM IMMAGINABLE TODAY? ONLY HERE! IN THE

BROKEN

SPIRE

ARENAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!"

With a *CLANK* the platform reaches the arena floor, and you can breathe relatively pure air for once. The crowd surrounding the ring all scream obscenities at the top of their lungs. Humans, elves, outsiders of all types and even a few abishai can be seen. The battleground in front of you is rustic as you expect, traces of blood and gore taints stone and sand. Pits and pillars are scattered across it.

Two shapes come out of the opposing side platform, a human of immense size wielding a cruel-looking cleaver and a grappling hook attached to some mechanism at his back.

"Would you look at that! I'll have turtle AND bird meat for tonight! Gahahahahahahaa!!" he proclaims, licking his cleaver.

At his side a humanoid shape covered in flames floats forward. The blazes make it hard to see what is it, but the vaguely shaped ears make it seem some sort of elf.

"EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE INVADERS SHALL BUUUUUUUUURN!" comes a distorted voice from within the shape.

Butcher

The serial killer starts whirling his hook in the air as he strides forward. "Well, if you all gonna hide... guess I'm gonna have to start with something ELSE!" The hook flies lightning-fast towards Earl, but lucky for the cleric it glances off at a one of the few pieces of plate in his gladiator gear. "GAAAAAAAAhhh!" it screams in frustration, as the crowd begins to laugh at him.

Glancing at Arkane and Emissary's position, he raises his left hand and a ball of fire appears far above them.

"Nowhere to hide."

Butcher

The serial killer starts to get angry now, he looks at Earl, thinking to get revenge from his negative energy ray, but after The Emissary displays her arcane power he changes his mind. He begins whirling his hook in the air and walks right in front of the pit nearby. "...and just what are you trying to do, LITTLE GIRL????" The hook flies at the half-elf and nails it in her thigh, a cruel smile flashes in his face as the mechanical contraption and his immense strength work together to violently pull the Sorcerer toward him. She slams against his body before falling down into the spiky pitfall, arms and legs pierced by the spears stuck to the ground.

The crowd roars in excitement and begins to cheer for the Butcher this time, and even the announcer joins in "UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! DID THE ONE AND ONLY BUTCHER SCORE AN ENVIRONMENTAL KILL????

Ranthir

The mad druid, hurt for once from Arkane's shot, begins to maneuver away from the fight, while still firing bolts at Arkane, Earl and Arcturus, with only the Kelemvor cleric being scorched hard in his chest.

"Little by little, all will be turned into ash.... he says, summoning a firey-ball above the tiefling and the cleric once again.

Butcher

"You made a BIG mistake getting close to me." he flashes a cruel grin as he frees his right hand of the hook and uses both hand for his cleaver. He slashes Dagat diagonally in the chest, and the wound starts to bleed a lot, almost unnaturally so. He swirls to strike Arcturus too but the strike glances off his gladiator armor.

The floating druid for once is reeling from the necrotic energies that flayed his scorched flesh. "YOU... YOU DEMON, YOU DARE TAINT THE FLESH OF A PROTECTOR OF THE GROVE?" his shape rapidly begins to change, and his voice becomes deeper, growlier. "SUCH CRIME..."

"...CANNOT BE FORGIVEN!!!" The beast swipes left and right, with only the right connecting into Earl's flesh. He follows up with a vicious bite that almost takes the cleric's left shoulder off.

Butcher

The barrage of attacks, specially Arcturus's vicious smite, finally begins to have an effect on Butcher's freak constitution. Severely injured on his entire body, he musters all the strength he has lifting his cleaver. "This...this ain't over yet...!!" he says with labored breath. Seeking revenge on the paladin, two rapid swings of the cleaver strike the aasimar's flesh, making him bleed profusely.

Ranthir

Arena Finale

As the spectral shovel tears Butcher's belly and make his guts spill out, the serial killer looks down with genuine surprise on his face. "Didn't know....it would end like this... BLAARGHH" He falls down heavy, Arcturus and Dagat jumping back to not get hit by his immense dead body. The crowd goes crazy, shouting "REBORN! REBORN! REBORN!" and clapping at the extreme violence being displayed down there.

The intervention of Marbles and Emissary in Earl's duel with the druid turns the tables around, a combination of the clerics attacks, kenku's blade stabs and a well-aimed Ray of Frost from the sorcerer enough to put Ranthir down for good. He staggers back, his form slowly returning to his scorched body, this time without any flames. You can finally see how horribly the flames have ravaged this elf's body. "...Rest? At last.....?" is all you can hear as his body turns to ash in an intense flare, leaving only a black ring and a pulsing ember heart on the ground.

The announcer speaks up. "THEY HAVE DONE IT! AGAINST ALL ODDS THE REBORN OF HOAR SLAUGHTERED THEIR FOES! GLORY IS YOURS TO CLAIM!

TODAY

YOU

ARE

VICTORIOUS!!!!!!!"
the screams, cheers and claps from the crowd are almost deafening at this point.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A hidden gate in the middle of the left wall opens up, where a squad of guards calls for you when the crowds start to clear out and noise go down. They don't have manacles to put in your hands, and don't make any aggressive motions. They just put a respectable distance between them and you as you walk inside to the inner workings of the Broken Spire Arena. You don't go down to the cells though, you stand in a hall with decent furniture and no smell of blood, sweat and piss.
You find the familiar plated form of Huldrak (and his duodrone) standing by a big table, six modest chests side-by-side, with a big piece of parchment in front of each one.
When the modron spots Marbles it begins to move toward the kenku but Huldrak stops it, shaking his head. "...I HAVE to get that fixed later" he clears his throat and his bombastic voice echoes through the halls. "REBORN OF HOAR... I COULD NOT BE ANY PROUDER OF WHAT I'VE SEEN TODAY. YOU PROVED YOUR VALOR TO THE DOOMBRINGER BEYOND ANY SHADOW OF DOUBT!"
He pauses to glance at the tables and his voice lowers down. "I bring you three rewards....and a request from my lord." He picks up one of the papers as an example to show to the group, and Dagat sees his name of it. "Official papers of Curst citizenship. You are no longer prisoners."
Huldrak opens one of the chests and you see a mixture of silver and gold coins, a couple of random gems added into the mix. "An appropriate reward, for what you have risked here today."
quote:
Each party member gains 600 gp
Ranthir’s Ember Heart - ??????????
Ranthir's Ring - ??????????
Arkane’s Broken Thunder Cannon - Can be repaired into an usable Thunder Cannon by spending 100gp worth of materials and working on it for a day (8 hours)
"As of now, I have no hold over you. Nevertheless, my Lord Octavimus has requested your presence as soon as possible, at the Temple of Hoar, near the center of the city. I advise you to heed his request, as he's the only one on this city that could shed light on your situation.".
You now have some downtime to do what you want, take care of your wounds, visit a tavern and rest, buy stuff in the bazaar/blacksmith, explore the city, ask for information, talk to Huldrak more, etc etc etc.
Shopping Around Curst
As the party go about their ways around the city, there is something you all immediately notice: this ain't no cheery town.
Dusty, rusty, sandy. Curst is uninviting as it can get. Most citizens and traders have a sour look in their faces, no matter the race. Curst guards and Octavimus's bladelings mercenaries eye each other with disdain, and you can almost taste the tension in the air, like anything could explode at any moment. From time to time you hear shouting and crashing sounds coming from some alley or another.
Earl and his map
You are able to acquire a very rough map of Curst and it's areas.
nothing is to scale, just for you guys to get a rough idea
Emissary at the Tavern
The "best" place for temporary lodgings the party could find so far was the Traitor's Gate Tavern, a very rough-looking place but decently clean and with surprisingly good food.
It's there that Emissary tries to find more information about how to go home, and figure out herself how the scorched druid's heart works. Her title, natural charm and exotic appearance are enough to attract much attention from the most decent-looking people in the place. Many of them listen to your tales and wonders from home, but it seems none can help. One of them, a hedge wizard of some sort, gives a suggestion. "It seems you have need of a planewalker. I know none that reside in Curst currently, but most of them, between their travels and business across the planes, take rest in Sigil. Your best bet would be there."
quote:
Ranthir’s Ember Heart - Once per day, as a Bonus Action, activate the heart to conjure a flame shield around you, giving you +1 AC, Fire Resistance and deal 5 Fire damage to however attacks you in melee for 6 rounds.
While talking and drinking a bit, beneath one of the drinks the Emissary ordered is a small crude paper, a message in red ink written in it.
quote:
"Dear Reborn
Quite the show you and your friends gave today at the arena
After you have your talks with The Big Cheese himself, how about gathering your friends and coming behind Tacitus's Warehouse, near the Junkyard, after midnight
If you want to *really* know what's going on, and how to get to Sigil"
You ask the bartender where the note came from, but it seems he has no idea.
Meeting Octavimus, at the Temple of Hoar
Having acquired proper supplies and equipment using your meager reward from the arena spectacle, you meet up together at the bazaar and head towards Inner Curst, and towards the Temple of Hoar. You find out that the Inner part of the city is just as lovely as the Outer, only has even more guards and people dress a bit nicer.
Only the huge three-story administration offices building is bigger than the Temple of Hoar, and right in front of it, a huge bronze monument of the symbol of Hoar.
Or would be, if it the coin wasn't split in half on the ground and heavily vandalized, like some explosion hit it right in the middle. Bladeling guards surround the area while a few clerics and workers survey the damage.
Most of the clerics you spot walking up the stairs of the temple seem to be able fighters, and they momentarily revere and whisper about you before moving forward with their tasks.
You arrive at the main hall of the temple, and you immediately spot the massive figure of Huldrak before anyone else. "MY LORD, THE REBORN HAVE ARRIVED." the plated juggernaut says, as makes way for an important-looking figure to walk forward, surrounded by a mix of temple guards and bladelings.
The human looks to have been born with an arrogant look in his face. He spends some time glancing between the six of you, a curious look in his face, as he seems to be speaking to himself. "...across the planes indeed. My patron's reach is far greater wide than I imagined. Or perhaps your bright souls yearning for vengeance so brightly that He couldn't help but grasp it."
He switches quickly to a more pleasant and direct voice. "Oh! But where are my manners! Even in a place such as this, such things are important. You may call me Octavimus. I have many titles but the most relevant right now is that I am a humble Chosen of Hoar, and I lead this temple in His service." He pauses.
"Arcturus Solar, Dagat Tuth, Earl Kettler, The Emissary, Arkane and Marbles... just like me you came from far away, to arrive at such a strange and brutal place. I imagine your heads must be full of questions regarding your current circumstances. It would please me greatly to shed light on it, so everything becomes clear and we can move forward. So please, ask away!"
And just what do your characters ask?
#acolyte GM of 2014
Dagat
"Many gods have different names in other planes, even I cannot grasp all facets of The Doombringer. Mayhap there was a god of vengeance or retribution in your home plane?" He pauses and smiles. "This city may be in the "middle of nowhere" from an initial perspective, but all is not hopeless if you understand how portals work, and how the clever get around here. We'll talk about what aid I may provide when appropriate."
Arcturus Solar
"You're in the Outlands, my friend. I'm relatively new to this plane and it's intricacies myself, so you'll have to excuse me if I don't have a scholar's full knowledge of it. The best way I could describe it is that you're in the center of the multiverse." He pauses. "A bit overwhelming, but the truth nonetheless, from here there is access to every Outer Plane in existence, if you know where to find them. From the Seven Heavens of Celestia all the way to the Infinite Layers of the Abyss. I know not myself what yours 'Eberron' is, but it does not matter. If you came from there and my God was able to grasp your soul, I assure you, somewhere in this center, be in The Outlands or in Sigil itself, there is a way home."
His face turns sours when he's about to talk about the severe vandalism and exploded holy symbol monument. "Ah... that. No doubt handiwork of the Revolutionary League, one of the infamous factions of this center of the multiverse. As you can imagine not all Curst denizens are happy with my presence, and it seems these Anarchists already had some heavy presence around here. Some nights ago the barracks where some of my bladeling mercenaries were garrisoned was firebombed too. And I suspect these attacks will not stop anytime soon."
The Emissary
He smiles at you. "Ah, you serve one of the Elemental Lords itself then? Interesting." He considers your question. "You Reborn are not. In fact, your group are the first ones. You have to understand, even for my God, any God for that matter, it is no simple task to resurrect beings from diverse planes like this. You have arrived here because my presence and my temple are the tiniest of footholds of Hoar in this plane of existence. You are here, regardless if you care for Hoar or not, because you care about retribution against those that did you wrong, be it a single person or an entire nation. The exact why of it, even I don't know, but I am sure Hoar will benefit in some way if you succeed."
Ark
He raises his hand at your question. "Let me make something perfectly clear, there is nothing that compels any of you in aiding me, my temple and even Hoar Himself. It is true that I have something that your group could aid me, but that would have to be mutually beneficial. In fact, Hoar himself ordered me to give you all a gift, after our little talk is over."
It doesn't escape your notice that he avoided talking about the arena fight.
Earl Kettler
After the cleric is finished talking, Octavimus has a puzzled look in his face. "You..are?" he says, and for a couple of seconds his eyes flare grey while he stares at you. "I sense no overflowing divine energies from you, but then again, I've yet to learn how much is drained from a person when they are Reborn. Nevertheless it is good to see someone else from Toril in this city."
You can ask more if you want, otherwise I'll move things along soon and he'll give you a 'gift'.
Marble's mimicry surprises Octavimus, but much less than it did to Huldrak. "Ah... Hoar's gift is not material, but valuable nonetheless."
He turns to Dagat and nods. Very well, I'll explain what I desire: I would ask that you investigate the Revolutionary League presence here in Curst... and then eliminate their leadership. In exchange I would supply you with proper magical equipment, pieces from my old adventuring days and from this temple's trove. After that you would be on your own however, for the Path of Vengeance is an arduous one with many trials."
He then pauses and raises his hand before any of you can answer. "Think about my offer over the night. Remember that proper retribution requires patience and planning."
Octavimus's Gift
"Like it or not, all of you have a tiny spark of divinity after The Doombringer brought you from the dead."
The Chosen of Hoar closes his eyes and begins channeling something. You feel a shiver on your spine as immense divine power begins to emanate from him, and all his bodyguards and Huldrak kneel toward him. When he opens his eyes his eyes are shinning white and you know someone else is on Octavimus's body
A powerful, resonating voice comes out. "My first and only gift to you." He raises his left hand open towards the group. "Your destiny."
You all fall on your knees in horrible pain as something flares inside your chests. You feel as something ignited your hearts, burning with anger.
Your vision turns white before painful memories come flashing back. The moment you were killed, betrayed. The moment everything went wrong. The moment you suffered the greatest injustice in your life. And you see the vision repeat. Again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again...
"This is who you are now." a voice from within. "Accept my power to destroy those who have wronged you."
Nightfall on Curst
The presence within Octavimus's body fades away after you make your decisions, and the human almost staggers down, looking visibly drained. "This takes it's toll on the mortal shell, no matter how many times I do it." He says as he straightens himself up.
He smiles when he hears the group's answer regarding his offer. "I'm glad you're eager to get started, this investigation will require some subtlety that my forces are...untrained at." he glances at Huldrak. "These Anarchs are very good at hiding and they know this city far better than me. At most I can give you two leads: The attack on the barracks where my mercenaries were stationed at, still severely damaged after it got firebombed, and the area of the city with most flux of people. A lot of Anarchs have a cover job for the day, so they must have a way to identify each-other, perhaps tattoos or markers."
"I know it's not much to go on, but I trust you have the expertise to uncover things further. And now I must bid farewell, I need to rest after having pure divinity essence channeled through me. Good luck on your search."
And with that, and the night closing in, your business at the Temple of Hoar ends for now. You're escorted out by the guards and find yourselves near the blasted holy symbol monument.
What do you do next?
Because of Ark using his background feature or whatever this might be slightly asynchronous but should be fine
Ark's Contact at the Tavern
The Tiefling manages to find an old half-orc smuggler contact of him having a drink in a very rundown bar, not very far away from the Traitor's Gate Tavern where your group currently takes rest. When he spots Ark he spits out his drink, eyes wide like he has seen a ghost.
You two talk a bit and it's clear he's kinda nervous talking to you. "L-look, I don't want to get involved with you alright? I'll tell you something, I've overheard other smugglers talking a couple of days ago, they came from outside Curst and brought a disguised weapons shipment, weird thing is they delivered it to that trash heap they call a "Junkyard", and then left town real quick."
A Good Night's Rest
After a couple days of sleeping in cell's floor of the Broken Spire Arena, tonight's rest at the Traitor's Gate Tavern is almost luxurious compared to what you went through. You feel yourselves completely recovered from the yesterday's ordeals, and even the lasting pain from the traumatic experience at the Temple of Hoar's seems to have faded away.
Looking outside you see the smog from yesterday cleared, and far away in the horizon you finally see the gigantic grey Spire going all the way up, the ring-shaped Sigil above it.
You ready yourselves for a new day at Curst.
What do you want to do, where to go? Do you want to split up or go together as a group? Questions questions!
Arcturus and Dagat - Hitting the Streets
It's quite a sight that heads towards the big wide street of Curst's bazaar, a paladin on a massive celestial warhorse with a big turtle warrior side-by-side. If your objective was to attract attention you succeeded magnificently, as there is no passerby that can't help but glance at the sight, even if the reactions are mixed. Some are impressed and recognize your faces from the arena fight, some rough-looking people spit on the ground at your sight, and others are simply confused as how you came to be here or over your warhorse.
Your walk/riding through these streets allows you to learn a bit more about Curst's denizens, even in a bright day most of the faces of the populace look sour, people bargain hard over prices at stalls, your hear shouting over some thief or two, one of them unlucky to be caught by some shop's hired thugs to get beaten up, and the local guards simply pass by and ignore it.
The local business seem to be normal as far as most cities go, stalls and shops with a wide variety of products and food to sell, the only weird thing being some "stables" were you see some vicious-looking lizards a bit shorter than Arcturus's warhorse with saddles over them.
Overall your quest to talk and search for "law-respecting individuals" in the open doesn't seem to be working very well, you find that most people just want to mind their own business, it feels like it's a city where everyone is trying to lay low, avoiding as much attention as possible.
An exception happens when you two get called over by a dwarf merchant of sorts.
On his tent and on the stands outside of it you see all kinds of items being sold, simple weapons, furniture, tools and utilities. He has two rough-looking thugs serving as guards and a half-elf worker that is running one of his stalls.
He smiles when you two get closer in front of his tent. "Ah, the brave gladiators of the arena! You two seem very...out of place around here. On this despicable city straightforwardness and honesty are very hard qualities to find. But I, Trakius, am different, I also dislike the mess these so called "Anarchists" are causing around the city. The guards around here don't care enough unless money is on the line." He motions for you two to get closer as he lowers his voice.
"3 stalls down on the left, going in that direction, there is some elf woman that runs some food shop. She always closes a bit earlier than everyone else, and when leaving she always brings a fair amount of it with her, to who knows where, way more than she would need for herself for the day. I think she might be one of them..." he has a look of disgust in his face.
Roll Perception and Insight
Ark, Emissary, Earl and Marbles - The Junkyard
You four have to walk quite some ways until you reach Curst's junkyard, you pass by rough-looking houses and warehouses, and you already notice the smell some good time before you get close to it.
Overall the place is a chaotic mess. Walls of abandoned furniture, machinery, equipment, tools and just plain trash make up the place. As you enter it one of the locals seem to be simply unloading a lot of trash on a cart, he glances at you but mostly doesn't seems to care, and he simply leaves the place after all his abandoned stuff is scattered around.
As you walk further and further into it, you spot five dirty-looking children on the top of one of the biggest piles, three of them human, one half-orc and one of them with clear elven features. They all turn around when they hear you, and of them, a human girl immediately jumps down, out of sight, behind the pile. The remaining four seem to not be very intimidated by the sight of this group of adults walking around.
The tallest of them, with a dirty looking knife on his belt, that couldn't be older than 12, steps up and begins talking. "The gently caress you four Clueless want. If you ain't here to dump stuff get outta here before you get hurt, losers!" The other three laugh and begins to make annoying juvenile noises, clearly making fun of you.
Arcturus and Dagat - Hitting the Streets
Arcturus realizes that some of the mannerisms of the dwarf are a bit exaggerated, like he's trying to act more outraged about these Anarchists than he actually cares for. You still can't grasp if he's entirely lying about it however.
Dagat's sharp eyes glance around and subtly notice a few unusual things, first is a hooded halfling a couple of stalls behind you that you're pretty sure it's tailing you, after he ordered a bowl of food and sit down just as you two started talking with the merchant, and feel his eyes on you both.
The other worrisome thing is you spot on some of the items the merchant is selling traces of dried blood, like it was not carefully cleaned off. The knuckles of the two guards near you are also a bit chaffed, like it has seemed a lot of "use".
Ark, Emissary, Earl and Marbles - The Junkyard
Earl and Ark remain focused even with the four annoying children heckling the group, and in the middle of the chaotic mess of trash you spot something interesting: On another big trash pile, to the left of the ~6 meters tall pile in front of you where the children are standing on, you two notice a big piece of rusted plate, scratches on the piece itself and on the ground near it suggest that it's been moved quite a lot, even if it looks pretty heavy to move.
Marbles's antics in repeating their noises, specially the one that looks like a leader, seem to amuse the little ones, and flusters the older one a bit, as he's surprised at it.
Ark drawing out his thunder cannon changes the mood instantly, the smallest one lets out a little "EEK!" and goes behind the tall one, who draws out some gleaming throwing knives. "You all deaf??? You want to try something on our home turf???" he says, but his voice is a little more shaky this time. The other two kids pull out some jars with some brown substance inside it.
Arcturus and Dagat - Cornering the stalker
Trakius can't help but show a disappointed face for a second before smiling again, him obviously thinking you two would immediately go after the elf after what he said. "...Of course. Well uh... best of luck in your search gentleman!"
You move away from the shop, and although the two hired thugs give you the stink-eye as you leave they don't try anything.
Arcturus on his warhorse and Dagat continue their way down the market, trying to move to somewhere with a little less movement. As expected, the halfling slowly makes his way toward you, while checking the other stores on the way.
You get your chance at some blades shop, where the Paladin finds a good opportunity to dismount and peruse a few weird and exotic weapons together with the Tortie. The halfling gets cocky and gets one stall closer to you, and then you spring the trap. Both of you move quickly towards the hafling, which realizes his cover is blown and starts to sprint towards an alley, but Arcturus's telepathic link with his steed is quicker, and the big and intimidating warhorse storms galloping and blocks the way, to the utter surprise of the hooded halfling.
He turns around to face the two of you right next to him, and he simply sighs with a defeated expression on his face. A raspy voice comes out "Alright you bastards, let's get on with it, this is the part where you drag me and try to beat the info out of me in some alley nearby. I'm saying nothing to your kind though." he finishes with a spit on the ground.
A few passerby's glance at what's happening but most of them continue on their way, clearly not interested in getting involved in whatever is happening. It seems business as usual in Curst, to their eyes.
Ark, Emissary, Earl and Marbles - Finding the way
Marbles and Emissary quickly defuse the situation, and the kids put away their weapons, even the smallest of them coming behind the leader's back, staring at you with his beady eyes. The leader looks about to talk big and rude again, but stops himself when he sees Earl Kettler begins to move the big metal plate away, revealing a big hatch a couple of meters behind it, leading downwards to some sort of tunnels.
The leader of the kids scratches his head and thinks for a bit. "Look, the folk down there pays and helps us just to get most assholes away from here, and warn them when a lot of people come at once... They already know you're here cuz Claire went pretty fast... but you all look a lot tougher than most kind that seems to start poo poo around here... not like I can stop you going down that hatch..."
The smallest kid builds up some courage and steps forward to talk to the four of you, and an innocent shaky voice comes out. "D-don't hurt them too much..okay? Some of them is real kind to us..."
Arcturus and Dagat - Interrogating the Stalker
As Arcturus's threat escalates more and more, the halfling finally comes to understand that the man in front of him is no normal thug and is the real deal of paladin fanaticism. His face transforms one of pure terror, and he instinctively starts to walk behind before bumping into the warhorse. He puts his hands up to show he's completely defenseless and starts talking, or at least tries to, as he's shaking a lot. "L-listen! You got it all wrong, we are not... this wasn't... I wasn't... gently caress!" he is getting close to panic. "Look, I'll take you to our..." he glances around, takes a deep breath and lowers his voice. "...to our headquarters ok? Not the other hideouts we have, the main place, and you can talk to our leader here in Curst, Nikola. It's in one of the abandoned warehouses here in Curst! There's... there's so much to explain, we are not all evil people like you think we are! The elf lady that Trakius, that bastard, wanted you to get rid of, she's one of us too! She helps the poor and the street kids with food from her shop that she uses for cover! You can keep your money, give it to someone who needs it!"
Ark, Emissary, Earl and Marbles - Junkyard Tunnels
The kids eyes go wide open when The Emissary gives them 4 genuine gold coins to each, and they readily take it, after quickly climbing down from the huge trash pile, now that the situation is handled and they understand you will not hurt them. They soon scatter away.
Marbles doesn't find any traps on the hatch or the way into it.
The group, mostly agreeing to move on since whoever is on these tunnels were already alerted to your presence, climb down the hatch.
Earl takes the lead with most of the group behind him, as you move forward into the cramped and dimly lit tunnels. On one of the walls you spot a massive symbol tagged into it.
It's not long before you find a door ahead of you, and hear hurried movements coming from the other side. You move forward readying your weapons, and Earl slams the door open as you storm inside a chamber. You find a huge minotaur and a halfling leading three hooded figures that are carrying huge wooden boxes. They turn around to you, and they immediately drop their boxes and draw out daggers.
The blonde halfling is the first to speak, a crude scythe on her hands. "Looks like someone barged into something they shouldn't!"
A big brown minotaur looks angrily toward you all, and slams his leather-covered fists together. "OCTAVIMUS PUPPETS???"
Even though I made the map, you're not in combat....yet.
Arcturus and Dagat - Arresting the shopkeeper
The halfling grimaces when you get the elf lady involved. "But I alread-" he thinks better to protest, closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. "Fine, just...let me talk to her first. She'll be angry but I can ease her into what's happening."
He slowly leads the way with you two surrounding him towards the shop. Two customers at the stall realize something is happening and leave real quick when you approach, and the young black-haired elven woman also looks surprised and scared when he sees the halfling surrounded by the two scary looking warriors.
The halfling takes a step forward and explains everything that just happened, and you see quite the flux of emotions on the woman's face. She obviously doesn't look happy or very understanding. She puts on a brave face and steps forward to the two of you. "Cruel bastards... you're just like the rest of Octavimus's lapdogs. You have no any idea how many people died when him and his Thousand Cuts bladeling warband killed when he conquered Curst to impose his will, do you? I was one of us that orchestrated the firebomb attack, burning those tyrants in their barracks felt so good like you wouldn't believe."
Her comrade intervenes. "That's enough, don't make this harder than it has to be-"
"SHUT IT! It's obvious these two morons have no idea what's going on!" she rebukes, pointing at Arcturus and Dagat. "This city was always a den of bastards, the scum of the multiverse, but we were truly free and independent, and we loved it. That Hoarite had no right to stake his claim on a city of the Outlands!"
Do you have anything to say or just move on with your plan like before? You two are obviously in control of the situation since the halfling is still very afraid of Arcturus and the woman is unarmed.
Ark, Emissary, Earl and Marbles - Junkyard Tunnels
The blonde halfling can't help but laugh loudly after The Emissary finishes. "Oh aren't you just the cutest Clueless of the planes? I'm glad you're so worried about the fine city of Curst and it's citizens but... we don't really need your help, believe me. Things were just fine before Octavimus came and shook things up. And we don't intend to back down for nothing. So I'll also make an offer! You get the hells out of here, we continue our own business, you go yours, and no one gets hurt!" she gives an honest smile back to the half-elf.
Marbles's antics and magic tricks definitely do not amuse the Minotaur like it did to the children above. He slowly takes a charging stance with his huge horns pointed at the kenku.
Unmoved by the elf lady's arguments, the duo continue on their plan. The elf is tied to the warhorse and put on it to make sure she doesn't escape as she's brought to Hoar's temple and is put under Huldrak's charge, after you explain some of the situation.
The halfling, which you find out is named Finn, is still too scarred to try to run away from you, and just basically continues to look miserable as he quickly shows you toward the Warehouse district, and towards a few ruined ones near Curst walls.
He leads you into a rusted warehouse where you swear it could fall off at any moment, scattered barrels, ruined merchandise, metal and wooden boxes are spread all over the place. Finn turns to you two, and points toward a stack of barrels in one of the corners. "Behind the fourth barrel, on the left, there's a lever. It will open a hidden hatchet nearby. It will lead into a tunnel that will lead you to one of our hideouts here in Curst, that is currently being commanded by Nikola."
Arcturus and Dagat - Revolutionary League Hideout
Finn readily takes the opportunity offered and runs the hells away from you two.
The lever thankfully is not some kind of trap, and true to the halfling's word, a large hatch opens from the dirty warehouse floor. You make your way into the tunnel, where far ahead you can spot some sorts of weak lights. Slowly and surely, you walk forward, weapons drawn and ready for anything.
At the tunnel's exit you come about a large chamber, that connects to 4 other tunnels spread around the room. The huge room is a chaotic mess of furniture, beds, tables, workshops and even a kitchen.
In one of the walls, a bright symbol in red.
You spot seven figures around a table, discussing something. Your loud footsteps as you enter the place make everyone glance in your direction. Five of them look like ragged fighters you're used to see in Curst, with miscellaneous weapons. Two others are more noteworthy, one of them a really weird looking earth genasi wearing a helmet, towering over everyone in the room.
The other, a woman who looks about to be their leader, as she was in the central position of the table.
The five random anarchists ready their weapons before a rumbling voice from the Genasi stops it. "NO. THEY ARE OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE. PREPARE TO SCATTER AND LET US DEAL WITH THIS. " The five say nothing, but already glance around the other tunnels in the chamber, and look ready to bolt.
The woman smiles toward Arcturus and Dagat. "Ah, so they sent the heavy muscle of the so called "Reborn" to us. And after you ignored our invitation... I guess it was a bit too cryptic for a bunch of fresh Clueless from other planes."
The earth Genasi talks again. "WHERE ARE THE REST OF YOU? HOW DID YOU FIND THIS PLACE?"
Arcturus and Dagat - Revolutionary League Hideout
The woman scoffs at Dagat. "Unlikely. So which one of us have you captured and interrogated, Zeguell? Scarlet? Finn? It does not matter, we all know the risks that being part of the League comes with. And a single compromised hideout means nothing."
The Genasi crosses his huge arms at Arcturus. "YOUR INTENTION IS ADMIRABLE, HOWEVER YOUR ZEALOTRY BLINDS YOU TO THE TRUTH. EVENTUALLY EVERY INSTITUTION OF POWER WILL BE CORRUPTED FROM WITHIN. IT WAS WITH THE OLD CURST ADMINISTRATION, IT WILL BE WITH OCTAVIMUS, HIS TEMPLE AND THE BLADELING WARBAND UNDER HIS SERVICE. IT IS WITH ANY FACTION OF THESE PLANES, IN THE OUTLANDS AND SIGIL. ONLY BY BREAKING THEM DOWN CAN THE PEOPLE FIND THE TRUTH FOR THEMSELVES."
Nikola continues the talk, staring at the Paladin too. "You speak like a Hardhead, and just like them, you only see a fraction of what's going on. Just like Octavimus did his research on Curst for his conquest, I made research on where he came from, and who this Hoar god of his is. Curst is a place full of outcasts, malcontents and the betrayed, all yearning and plotting vengeance, it's true, but most of these tragedies comes from actions of people like Octavimus himself. Ask the people of Curst how many of them were persecuted wrongly by corrupt law and were forced to escape, how many lost their homes due to wars that had nothing to do with them, how many got betrayed by the very factions they gave their live to?"
"...AND TO YOUR OFFER, PALADIN. WE WILL NEVER RENOUNCE OUR WAYS, I'D RATHER FEED YOU TO THE EARTH BENEATH. BOTH OF YOU LEAVE THIS PLACE, AND NEVER RETURN." the Genasi finishes.
Ark, Emissary, Earl and Marbles - Wrapping them up
Marbles's arcane is powerful enough to knock the halfling out, and she almost falls right on her scythe near Earl.
The single remaining conscious anarchist is moped up by the four of the group, and the scuffle at the underground tunnels is over. You take a second to take a breath and pay attention to any other sounds coming from the left and right tunnels, but it seems there's nothing coming, for now.
The three wooden boxes that this anarchist group were carrying, presumably what the weapon smugglers brought to them, are still on the ground, near the exit to the tunnel to the right.
You know have an unconscious halfling, the three boxes and two ways to leave this room (besides the way you came from), what do you do?
Arcturus and Dagat - Revolutionary League Hideout
When it's clear that violence is inevitable, the five anarchists besides the big Earth Genasi and Nikola prepare to rush to one of the side tunnels, some of them jumping over the planning table.
Nikola mutters some arcane words, waves a hand over her face very dramatically, and suddenly two copies appear from behind her, mimicking her movements perfectly as they shuffle around. She smiles very confidently at the two.
The brawler Genasi slams his giant knuckles together, and begins channeling something, as a dust pillar starts to emerge from the floor, right in front of the table.
Marbles - The Weapons Shipment
The kenku works fast on checking and figuring out if the boxes are safe to open, and soon their contents are revealed.
On the first box, the biggest of the three, you find three huge heavy arbalests and around 30 heavy bolts, all of them apparently of good craftsmanship. It looks very cumbersome to use and would require some good muscles.
The second box has some warnings to be extremely careful with contents inside, and heavily protected and cushioned by a lot of straws, you find three vials with some cyan substance inside of it.
On the final box Marbles finds something very shiny, some shortsword of a kind, but the steel glistens with all sorts of colors as they shift around with no pattern to it, like a rainbow dancing on the blade. On the hilt, two initials: "Y. T."
Reunited - Revolutionary League Hideout
With the weapons shipment and the Kelemvite's ritual for the recent dead taken care of, and the halfling rogue properly hogtied and gagged by the bounty hunter, the squad moves forward into the tunnels led by the Emissary going into the right direction.
After a couple of minutes into it, the halfling wakes up from Marbles's spell, and predictably the fierce little thing starts to struggle on Earl's shoulder, but the Cleric handles it with ease.
Far ahead, you hear sounds of a lot of movement and combat, and pick up the pace.
You four come into a main chamber, where you see the familiar faces of Dagat and Arcturus engaged with what you assume is Anarchist leadership, on the other end of the chamber, a group of five seems to be fleeing towards one of the side tunnels. They are momentarily stopped, shuddering as a bright wave comes from within Arcturus as his shout reverberates through the chamber. Luckily for them, the Paladin engages with their Earth Genasi boss, and they use that opportunity to flee with even extra incentive.
At the same time you see Dagat fighting style easily cleaving through mirror images in a barrage of attacks until none but the original remain, and the mage is almost cut down from the assault of the Tortle, blood spraying everywhere and dripping from his glaive. A stab from Arcturus's spear of light is what puts her hard on the floor, at death's door.
The enormous Genasi brawler is not blind to it, as he glances at Nikola gasping on the ground. When he sees Ark, Earl, Emissary and Marbles, with one of his crew tied up, he makes an executive decision. His dust pillar completely dissipates as he focus on something else, he slams his two boulder-like fists together on the ground towards the tunnel the five anarchists escaped, and everything around you shakes heavily. But the effects seems to be focused on that particular tunnel, as it violently collapses, pillars, earth and sand seal it off entirely.
With that finished, he simply sits on the ground and crosses his legs, even with a dangerous and menacing Paladin right in front of him.
What do you do now???
Anarchist Shutdown
The huge Earth Genasi responds without any emotion at the situation. "Enough. You have won Curst for the Hoarites. For now. I'll come peacefully as long as Nikola is treated." The bloodied mage on the ground tries to say something, she struggles to even say a word and just coughs up a lot of blood instead, Dagat's inflicted injuries on her being that severe.
With the halfling already hogtied the group does the same for the Genasi and Nikola while she's treated. Dagat and Arcturus don't take any chances with the Genasi brawler and double the amount of restraints on him, while escorting him out armed and ready for anything. The crew does a quick cleanup on the hideout but don't find much, the Revolutionary League seems to most of the time carry their stuff with them. You leave the same way the paladin and tortle came, exiting at an abandoned warehouse.
You make your way back towards the Inner Curst area toward the Temple of Hoar, the sight of you six striking figures escorting three dangerous-looking criminals draw a lot of sights, but no exaltation or cheers, just a lot of rushed whispers between the crowds as they try to figure out whats happening and undoubtedly spread rumors about it. As you reach the foot of the stairs to the temple a lot of the Hoarite members silently observe the captured anarchists, a dark expression on their faces.
As you head up to the main chamber where you previously discussed your deal with Octavimus, you spot the man himself alone, kneeling at an altar for his god. The Chosen of Hoar turns around at the sound of so much movement. He smiles at the sight of the captured targets. "Ah, the Reborn. And you bring me a gift... you work very efficiently do you not?" he glances at the enormous Genasi. "Is he the leader of the nasty thorn in my side?" he looks back at the group. "Report on what happened, please."
In addition to that, you can start thinking about one reasonable item upgrade for your character, since Octavimus did promise to aid you in that in return for this service. I'm not familiar enough with how rare certain equipment are in 5e D&D, so you could help me up with that, just be reasonable for a lvl 5 party.
Just Rewards
Octavimus listens to the report from the group, paying attention to every word, even Earl's mash-up of words. "And all of this in one day of investigation. Most impressive indeed. It's a shame some of them escaped but..." he glances at the captured Anarchist leadership just as masked Hoarites appear from a door leading downstairs into some lower temple chamber. "...I do believe we can make them talk.".
The masked Hoarites take the prisoners off your hands as Octavimus leads you to an armory of sorts deeper into the temple, where an unarmored Huldrak is seem to be polishing his enormous armor, and you finally learn that he's a grey-skinned half-orc of some sort, massively muscled as you might have expected. He stands at attention when Octavimus arrives with all of you.
The Chosen of Hoar continues "It's about time I make good on my end of the deal. Expect your paths of vengeance to have many trials and hardships, as is expected in service to The Doombringer..." he smiles as he takes off his majestic dark-grey cloak, and presents it to Arcturus. "...so it helps to be properly equipped. And a leader must look the part." It seems that Octavimus assumes the paladin to be leader of the Reborn of Hoar, true or not.
quote:
Arcturus receives a stylish dark-grey Cloak of Protection, it has some sort of emblem on the back, surprisingly not of Hoar, but of a noble house of sort, a twin-headed snake coiled around a staff.
Huldrak grabs his enormous glaive and motions toward Dagat, waiting for the fighter to pick it up. "MAY IT SERVE YOU WELL, AS IT DID FOR ME. I SLAUGHTERED YANDALL THE MARROW-DRINKER, A MURDEROUS ICE-GIANT AND HIS FAMILY WITH IT, ONE OF MY FINEST RETRIBUTIONS IN THE NAME OF HOAR. TAKE GOOD CARE OF IT."
quote:
Dagat receives a +1 Glaive, "The Equalizer", deals +1d4 damage to enemies of size bigger than the user.
The blade at the end seems to be heavier than expected, explained as a mechanism in the handle seems to suddenly stretch it, explaining the effectiveness in killing giants.
On a nearby wall Earl picks a shield that seems perfect for him, it seems to made out of some deep dark alloy, and was carved in the format of an angry eye that gazes through all lies.
quote:
Earl receives a Sentinel Shield.
Marbles spots a very shiny golden headband resting on a small fluffy pillow, which seems to fit the kenku perfectly. As you put it on your head, you suddenly feel like you understand the multiverse better than before.
quote:
Marbles receives a shiny Headband of Intellect.
The Emissary receives a rather heavy but exquisite wand from Octavimus himself. "Not many of Hoar's followers have arcane skills, but the few that do leave their mark. This one was from a dear companion of mine, before she departed this existence. May it serve you well, fair lady."
quote:
The Emissary receives a +1 Wand of the War Mage. With the exception of a vibrant magical ruby at the top, the wand seems to be made of dark green insect chitin, sturdy but surprisingly light-weight
Ark notices a strange metal gauntlet/shoulder gear combo near an absurdly large composite bow. It fits your right arm perfectly, and you feel your gun lighter and easier to handle while wearing it.
quote:
Ark receives the Sureshot Gauntlet. Once per combat, if you miss an attack with your ranged weapon, you may reroll it with a +1 bonus. This mechanism made of brass seems to shift the weight of your gun around, and handle the recoil quicker. On the shoulder, a brass detail in the shape of a skull seems to grinning.
This is only the half of an update, the remaining (and Marbles identification of acquired items from the tunnel fight) will come tomorrow, but feel free to react to your rewards/talk between yourselves, whatever. Or just chill until next update, that's cool too.
The Next Step
After receiving your just rewards from Octavimus and his armory, the group part ways and heads for Traitor's Gate Tavern once again to rest and figure out your next steps based on your information.
You spend the rest of the evening tending to your injuries, resting, eating and inspecting your new equipment. Marbles familiarizes figures out the recovered smuggled loot from the Anarchists. The vials with the dangerous looking cyan substance look to be some powerful alchemical concoction, capable of some truly powerful explosion.
quote:
Dragonflame Flask
Can throw this flask up to 20 feet. Everyone in 15 feet radius makes a 14 DC Dexterity saving throw or suffer 5d6 fire damage. Saving throws halves the damage, if not the target is set on fire, suffering 1d6 fire damage at the start of each turn unless they pass 12 DC Dexterity saving throw
The shortsword is a magical in nature, but in a very minor way.
quote:
Anarch Chroma Shortsword
"Y. T." initials on the hilt.
Can only be wielded by Chaotic-aligned users.
Four times per day half the damage caused by this weapon can be turned into Fire/Lightning/Cold/Acid damage. But can't be turned into a damage type you already used once.
~~~

On the following day, the six Reborn of Hoar spread out to find information on where to go next on the Outlands. It seems one way or the other, even if each member of the group have their own objectives and perspectives on the matter of your "rebirth", the smartest option would be to head to Sigil, the City of Doors. There you would find more opportunities, information on portal locations to your planes and learn more about how this center of the multiverse works.

The how to get to Sigil seems to be conundrum. Concrete information about portals and their destinations are valuable and understandably kept secret by those who know (with a few exceptions aside), specially in the recent tumultuous times where gods and entities of all kinds seem to be intent on carving their own places in the Outlands, a previously very Neutral place.

You question all the locals, learned or not, on the the interesting rumors about the surroundings around Curst, disregarding various small Indep villages and nomad caravans that exist. It's not an easy task talking to the suspicious people of Curst, and some of them mockingly suggest you visit Carceri itself, as it is one of the few portals that no one bothers to hide, since very few people go willingly into it, although some of the prisoners and souls there could be quite knowledgeable about the planes.

Afterwards the group reunites and ponder over their options, as they look into the uncertain map of the Outlands.

Your options:

quote:

The Prison Plane of Carceri

The portal to it is right in front of the main administrative building of Curst, it will appear near a monument as long as you think about a metal cage slowly surrounding you. Locals avoid the monument as much as they can, for fear of accidentally thinking about it and being swallowed into it.

You heard that recently a very knowledgeable occultist from Curst was exiled into the place, after a deal with a trio of demodands went very wrong. Rescuing him would be quite the task, but it looks the most straightforward option to acquire information about reaching Sigil.

quote:

Journey to Semuanya's Bog

This wild untamed land near the Tir Fo Thuinn lake has seen a lot of movement lately, foreign warlords of all types and planes seek to recruit the local lizardmen tribes into their own forces. It seems an interesting place to leave your own mark in the planes, and learn exactly how these warlords reached the Outlands in the first place.

quote:

Journey to the city of Hopeless

The rumor about this one was particularly weird and made you scratch your heads a bit. "If you think this shithole is depressing..." one of Curst's citizen said "...you haven't been to Hopeless yet."

This bleak city bordering the Grey Waste seems to be under a vicious siege... of entertainment. It seems to be some sort of god of festivities, drinking, happiness and enjoying life to its fullest has its eyes on this city, and sent his most faithful to spread joy as much as they can, and hopefully drag this city closer to Elysium.

The Travel

While the group gathers and plans on where to go next, you notice that Ark is nowhere to be seen. When one of you searches his quarters you discover a note by the tiefling, where he explains his decision to leave the group, he strongly feels he would be more comfortable and successful on his lonely path of a bounty hunter, even as a Reborn of Hoar.

In the end, it seems the group has decided between Carcery and Semuanya's Bog, and while both locations no one in the multiverse would jump at the opportunity to visit it, the Reborn has mostly decided to go towards the Bog where lizardfolk dwells in the Outlands. Perhaps by learning how and why all these rumored warlords are there, you might find a way to the City of Doors.

While Arcturus has his immense warhorse to travel long distances, the rest of the group acquires two big lizard mounts from the local bazaar, as well as supplies for three days of travel. Not interested in wasting time, the five Reborn of Hoar set out as soon as they are able, and head into the wastelands surrounding Curst, first west and then north into a canyon pass towards the Bog.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The journey is thankfully peaceful, you manage to avoid packs of strange bird-like predator creatures and the few wandering spirits that you spot at night, the lost souls that inevitable escape or leak in this center of the multiverse. This piece of the outward zone of the Outlands seems a bit hostile to life, although you manage to spot one or two Indep villages in the distances.
Eventually after two days of continuous travel the arid climate and desolate surroundings begin to give way to more humid and green places.
Semuanya's Bog is as wild as you expected, even as you head further into the swamp, you fail to spot any roads or signs, no traces of civilization you're used to is there to be seen here. The atmosphere is heavy and dank, and stinks like any swamp would do.
You travel further for around 5 hours, exploring and searching for any signs of anyone besides you, until you finally spot some kind of primitive village in the distance.
As you approach it, it's clear something really bad happened to this village. Tribal signs and mutilated corpses of orange-colored lizardfolk confirm it as a native settlement. Almost all of the wooden buildings are destroyed, some having signs of burning, and signs of intense battles are present through all of it.
As you stand in the center of this village and take a good look around, there is no life to be seen. Corpses of lizard warriors and disgusting bloated creatures are all around you, happy maggots having a real feast on them. It seems not even the non-combatants were spared, as a lot of completely unarmored and very small lizards are impaled on the center, surrounding a now-defaced communal ritual stone.
A big brown banner, with a symbol of a green and clawed, reptilian hand, seems to have been inserted recently, right on the center of the village.
Welcome to Semuanya's Bog! What do you do now?
The Banner
While Dagat does his best to clean the surroundings and restore some sort of dignity back to the defiled shrine, Arcturus takes a closer look to the banner. Strangely enough, it is also covered in tribal markings typical of lizardfolk, but you notice the stink of Tanar'ri on it too.
Marbles's Search
The kenku does his best to check every corner of the village for anyone still alive (and any shiny trinkets they may have left behind), unfortunately it seems the place has been thoroughly destroyed and looted.
However your perceptive eyes do spot tracks around the village, and discover something interesting. It seems whatever force attacked this village split up after the deed, with more organized tracks marching northeast, while to west you see tracks of all kinds, like some of them were escorted out. It seems that some of villagers were captured instead of completely wiped out.
The group does their best at restoring some degree of dignity back to this nameless lizardfolk village, but eventually they move on.
Choosing to follow the trail of the group that seemingly captured some of the villagers, the party heads west, much deeper into the opressive swamp with Marbles as the lead, trying to follow up on the tracks as best as the kenku can.
Near the entrance to a cavern
It's been around two hours as you truck along, you're about to stop for a pause before you stop movement ahead, near some hills that seem to border this part of the Bog.
The group hides in the bushes south of a cavern entrance covered in tribal marks, various skulls and unknown symbols. Near it you spot an enormous scaly monster (with some "scales" being thick enough to look like rocks), thrice the size of the fighters of your group. He seems to be covered in blood and gore, going down hard on thick pieces of meat, torn apart from a couple of other animals that surround him. You spot a large primitive mace near him.
Near him and the entrance itself are smaller armored lizardfolk with halberds. One of them seems to be the "minder" of their giant "friend", as he's the one giving the pieces of meat. The others are guttering between themselves, in some natural lizard tongue.
Arcturus can't help but feel something weird coming from them.
Marbles checks as best as he can to confirm that indeed, the tracks you have been following so far lead to this location.
They have not spotted you so far, in your position in the bushes, foliage and trees.
What do???
Arcturus Judgement
With his powers the Paladin definetly sense the stink of Tanar'ri around here, with something powerful coming from inside the cave, but you cannot exactly sense what yet.
The regular sized lizardfolk that you see have been... tainted somehow, you see an unnatural cruel intelligence from its eyes, very different from regular lizardfolk, which for good or for ill are only interested in survival at the most base instict, being one of the most neutral races of the multiverse.
Curiously, you don't sense any corruption from the big one.
Marbles's flask flies and breaks right in the middle of the trio, the cyan flames almost completely consumes them by surprise, they fall on the ground trying to clear the flames as the group moves up capitalizing on the surprise attack.
Two more lizardfolk guards move out of the cave after hearing the sounds of screams, and the big lizard and his minder readying themselves too, as the big one moves towards his gigantic mace.
I took out the bushes just to make your names appear easier.
Alpha Strike
With the grim blessing of Kelemvor bestowed upon them by Earl the group manages to deal a heavy blow to the units posted outside. Dagat's avalanche of swift attacks upon the gigantic lizard monster would make Huldrak proud, with the foe's fall echoing through the swamps.
The big lizard looks extremely disoriented and confused but before it can even regain a bit of stability a *CLUNK* echoes on it's thick skull by the Butcher's Blade hilt, knocking it out for good, with its handler clearly panicking before being put down by the brutal paladin and a well-aimed bolt from Marbles.
The agony of the corrupted lizard folk hit by the dragonflame is cut short as the lethal ice splinters from Emissary's spell eviscerates them.
Seeing this, the two lizardfolk guards that came out to see what in the Nine Hells was going on outside of the cave quickly go back into it, running for their lives.
Small update, will continue tomorrow depending on what the party wants, do you waste no time and pursue into the cave? Do something about the big guy knocked outside? Something else?
The Chamber of Corruption
As you hurry and chase the enemy deeper into the dark cave, the smell of foul tan'ari almost becomes overwhelming making the most fragile of the group gag a bit. Dark magic flames on the walls mark the path all the way to a large section of the cave where you spot a very disturbing sight.
Lined up and chained on the walls are desperate lizardfolk, still natural, severely beaten and bleeding, with still some strength left to try to struggle against the chains. On some pervese ritual circle in the middle of the chamber a huge amount of unhatched eggs, some dark purple smoke swirling around them.
Two promenient figures at the back are waiting and ready to face the party, as some of the remaining lizardfolk guards on the front raise their spears. The one that seems to be in charge almost seems to emanate corruption from her presence.
"No interruptions will be forgiven in the making of our Lord's army!" she says in a cruel voice that churns your stomach, and her many eyes open in fury. Immediately the scarred barlgura at her side howls in fury, slamming the ground with its massive fists causing the cavern to shake a bit.
