I used to post on 4chan when I was in high school in the early 2000s. it started going to poo poo shortly afterwards so I ended up spending more time lurking on SA, ED, YTMND, Newgrounds, all the other typical nerd haunts. 4chan was never :airquote:good:airquote: per se, but in its heyday it was like a mad science lab of internet culture where everyone was constantly spitballing, some of it was funny, nothing was off limits, and thread turnaround was fast as hell so you could have a good time just browsing the constantly shifting mass of insanity and shitposting. then it became a thing where everyone started just parroting poo poo instead of trying to make original content, to the point where the existence of the mythical original content became a joke in itself, and then came lolcats which heralded the death of what meager value was left in that culture

Yeah people really dont realize just how crazy it was back then to have such a torrential volume of evershifting stuff. It was like distilled adhd. The death of oc was sad but people trying to make memes solely to try and create memes instead of just trying to make funny jokes naturally was the biggest sign imo.

I like that Weaver was candid about how reader interactions had ended up affecting his/her original planned story/route. Stuff like everyone's favorite web adventure good ol Homestuck is impenetrable because the difference between railroading and player suggestions narrows to a fine point and then the user suggestions just vanish entirely.

Make sure youre never *too* popular to avoid having suggestions that match identically to your vision and youre golden.

The Chanology stuff peaked around 2008 with the first protest and then slowly petered out over the next year iirc. ED was still ostensibly a wiki for LJ and other web drama and memes at the time. But there was still pushes to harass people online they found cringeworthy. It wasn't any sort of either/or thing. It was always about trolling people and getting a rise. Even for noble purposes and against people that probably deserved it, it was always about that. It was always about the lulz.

I can probably name a few more examples that I can remember like Alex Wuori and the An Hero kid as trolling that extended irl that 4chan did and/or spearheaded. Idk who spearheaded the CWC stuff fwiw.

But with regards to being varied, but I'd argue that being varied at all is the qualifier rather than more varied at this point.

I was wondering when somoene would namedrop alex wuori then i remembered i never cared enough to truly learn what all that horseshit was anout. Some gaia onlinenguy? Seemed like the first time /b/ was used as someones personal army

That would be in the Yotsuba Society Archives. It has plenty of pre-2011 r9k content as well. Gigabytes and Gigabytes of it including the images I've saved by hand. All of it are my personal archives that I never got a chance to analyze or research in my own time because of financial pressures and constraints.

I definitely remember that exact image as well. I seem to be the only active (read:existing) imageboard historian on earth.

Thats genuinely pretty cool. Arent you concerned that you might be hosting something illegal tho?
