Warframe handles this problem pretty well by having the progression path be modular, and each new expansion adds more to the world and the way you relate to it. Like, in the new Fortuna expansion you can get to the point where you can liberate the proles from corporate rule, and they form a whole new organization with its own agenda. The main enemy factions are also a libertarian ancap conglomerate, and a genocidally militaristic group of degenerating clone warriors.

Incidentally, whatever you might think about Jim Sterling's opinion on games (his Fallout 4 review is insanely bad), he's done some of the best coverage on just how bad and ruthlessly exploitative the gaming industry has become.

I keep dying on purpose.

the main enemy of that game is literally a space roman empire. and the other enemy factions are even more hosed up and terrible than them. destiny 2 sucks in nearly every way possible but "secretly fascist" isn't one of them

Sad there's no mention of THE SABOTEUR which was a fun as hell GTA Clone. You're an irish spy sent into nazi-occupied Paris with one goal: kill all nazis. It also has a really neat mechanic where nazi controlled areas are black and white (with red as well for the sin city look) but go to full color when you liberate them. It's not very marxist but it's a game about killing nazis and hanging out with the workers of the Moulin Rouge .

I knew 76 was gonna be a piece of poo poo but I bought it anyway because my Turkish friend talked me into playing it with him. So here's the kicker about that:

Bethesda is only distributing 76 online through Bethesda.net because they're trying to cut out Valve as the middle man, which makes sense. But they can't do digital distribution themselves in many places outside of the United States, and they're only stocking console copies of Fallout 76 in Istanbul. So the guy who talked me into buying the game can't even buy the game himself. Although I did get the OP and this thread out of it, so I guess it wasn't a total loss.

lmao naturally this would be the case, that sucks that they can't even get it right to be able to play on PC with people outside of the US

cutting down on steam's monopoly is probably good in theory but I'm imagining an end state where every publisher has their own store and you have to maintain an account with each publisher and have credit card info on file with them, and then their store is always going down for maintenance or has download speeds that are 5% of steams or w/e, there probably isn't a good future here as long as money still exists

regardless, valve's stewardship of steam has gotten really bad, it's not possible to get a sample screenshot right now because it's in the middle of a sale, but during normal weeks so much of their storefront is just shovelware trash with titties stapled onto it and even outside of that their curation of their own storefront is so poor that it becomes a chore to find titles you might be interested in unless you already know exactly what you're looking for (game title, or at least publisher name)

Ok now get this: Bethesda finally released a patch for Fallout 76 5 days after launch, but the 14 gig update required a full 49 gigs of hard drive free space for the entire game just to download. I had to go into my itunes backlog and delete all the downloads just to make room for it.

When a tree grows, it is soft and pliable. But when it's dry and hard, it dies.

Hardness and strength are death's companions. Flexibility and softness are the embodiment of life.

That which has become hard shall not triumph.

Valve is what happens when a developer finds a new passion for creating and loving with economic systems, and also has unlimited money.

Their games are still the best in their respective niches though, even if they only trickle them out.

The space monster is effectively dead at the beginning of the game; the evil corporation keeps it on life support in a glass jar and then the supersoldier they create from its DNA revives it.

this is an extremely pro-click video that goes into detail about a really bad game (company of heroes 2), but also inadvertently deconstructs a lot of media that acknowledges the soviet role in WWII while diminishing the country's importance and reiterating stereotypes created during the cold war, long after the allied victory.

silent storm, sentinels and hammer & sickle. they're balls hard, but you kill a fuckin' tonne of nazis. it's also subversive, where if you start as a nazi you wind up killing nazis.

the walking tanks are kinda poo poo, but you can get a laser gun to handle that tedium. the expansion and second game have you murdering capitalists.

Yeah the panzerwalkers or whatever completely threw off the balance of the game to the point it wasn't any fun anymore, because all the element of risk in having your guys taking fire goes away. Power armor in WW2 tactical strategy sounds like a great idea, but you have to build the whole game around it. Hammer & Sickle was way better if only because it didn't have any power armor.

not using the 'panzerkleins' keeps the late game super fun and challenging. you still have to go up against them, but you can headshot the dudes inside with moisins and the laser gun completely ignores the armor. nazis in power armor slumping to the floor all sad like is wonderfully rewarding.

the second game, hammer and sickle, does force you into specific character builds if you want to... stay agile, I suppose, in the story. one of your allies will betray you and if you don't have a character with high initiative, they'll just murder you with a submachine gun. the prejudice against stealth and skill based builds is real.
