TV was not a good medium for continuing storylines, because it was easy to miss one because you were hurried off to school. I'm the internet age, you can just watch it at leisure. I binged this entire show after seeing someone react to some of the backlash this show got a year ago and because I thought the designs were spot on. I wasn't expecting much, it was almost a watch in protest to support the show. Ended up loving it (especially the D&D episode, Bow's dads, the Star Wars references, the gay energy and the references to the old show in the D&D episode; each of the separate imaginations were a reference to some other animations and one of them stood out as a reference to the original: stiff movement and how they turn their heads being the tip-off.) I look forward to more, for sure. And gently caress bigots.

HorseLord posted:I would still like to know why being mean to children is considered to be villainy in a show where someone tried to blow up all of existence. The latter is a bit worse, I think? One of these things happen in real life to some of its audience, the other isn't happening anywhere that matters.

If Smith makes it very gay I will be very happy.

Catra isn't an incel, that'd mean they never hosed.

"I hope this mom is dead" says Elephant Ambush about cartoon mom in a series aimed at small girls. Like, what?

Shadow Weaver is a definite "the ends justify the means", but while we're drat sure what the means are, we have only hints at what her ends truly are. She's damned good at putting the viewer through the ropes and it's kind of my favorite sort of antagonist, the kind you need to keep close while knowing it will hurt you in the process.

Elephant Ambush posted:WTF? This is a show aimed at kids, especially young girls. The creators and staff are not gonna be all GIGANTIC GENITAL REFERENCES. WTF is wrong with you? It's surprisingly common in children's entertainment, but it usually is just the result of the animators being really horny. This monster could have been anything, but it was a giant one-eyed snake. There was symbolism going on, but I'm not smart enough to piece together what the allegory actually was, if it was sex on wedding night or implanting a seed in an egg to pass the torch to the next generation, but there was definitely something going on and it was intentional.

It's good. I'm actually surprised about how many things they took from the show, and modernized it thoroughly to feel like its own unique thing.

Halloween Jack posted:I think the point of that was to emphasize just how much Catra had alienated everyone and isolated herself. She only had one relationship that was going well, and it was ultimately transactional. It struck me as being sex work, metaphorically, but maybe that's too glib. I don't think the producers are brave enough to comment on sex work. It was just capitalism.

The only character I feel like we missed out on development wise is Frosta, she went from being a kind of uptight but reasonable queen of her own domain who had trust issues with the princess brigade, to becoming an over-eager immature brat for team good guys. It just feels like there is an episode missing there.

Perfuma has been fairly consistent and her dealing with cacti in the desert was cute and sort of developing. And educational. Also it made her look like a badass for a solid spell. I guess I just wanted a bit more to develop her into a freedom fighter. At the same time, I think she's gotten more development than her 80's equivalent.
