Is the prevailing message that Catra should get a happy ending because she was a victim too? Trauma or not, causing the death of people isnt something that gets wiped off the slate because of regret. I would hope its not some 80s cartoon fairy tale ending where Glimmer goes "got my mom, killed, nbd we all know SW was cruel to you" SW getting 'accepted' into the friend group is pretty dumb but thats clearly a set up for her to influence the cause in nefarious ways and hurt more people. I binged all of Voltron after the series finished and felt it did a good job of bring more complexity and nuance to a "good vs evil" dynamic. Some people had happy endings, some had bittersweet, some bad guys didn't get their just desserts etc. I'm expecting the same from this. pentyne fucked around with this message at 18:50 on Aug 9, 2019 |

Catra has gone from S1: Enemy rising through the ranks toppling her teacher and causing havoc S2: Clashing with Adora on missions, struggling to learn to lead, making mistakes and lying to cover it up S3: Running away from a environment of happiness, tasering the crap out of her friend and getting them imprisoned on false charges, threatening someone who loves her with the same consequence, attempt to destroy everything cause mayhem and madness just because Adora got SW attention again. Extremes I assume for some overall story growth and development, but still pretty messed up behavior. The ability to sympathise with someone tends to drop off rapidly as they start being just as bad as the "real" villains.

If the estranged parents thread has taught me anything its abuse is an exceptionary broad term that covers everything from closed fist punches for not folding laundry, to telling your child you are going to the hospital to have them kill you because the child is a disappointment and its their fault when you die, or deliberately forgetting a birthday to teach someone a lesson. Maybe looking for personal revelations about bad parents and victim behavior in a Netflix cartoon show isn't the best idea? Its fine as a reminder or positive portrayal of people improving their situation and personal relationships but if you are looking at SW and saying "so what? She treats kids like poo poo no big deal everyone is like that" there's more going on that this cartoon won't fix. Same with Catra and being a lovely person and hurting others. If you need her to get redeemed to feel good about your situation then you should explore other professional avenues to improve mental health.

Stuff like Mara destroying the tower thing to weaken Light Hope's capabilities, the red virus that Entrapta was messing with acting more like a "kill every enemy" switch that seems more like an Old Ones tech feature than a bug, or how Light Hope noting that Adora's emotions are making her go down the same path as Mara. My guess is that Mara's a lot like Adora and Huntara in that she's a soldier who realized the harm their side was doing and tried to make things right. There was a ton of stuff packed into those scenes. - The purple hologram doesn't look a thing like the sad Mara and looks/sounds like Light Hope. Might mean nothing but the red tech was easily able to take over Adora so the First Ones clearly had a control trigger if She-ra ever went berserk. - Mara was part of the first group to settle Etheria to study the magic, its not the original First Ones home so there would have to be other "First Ones" in the universe not a part of whatever was going on - Stuttering about Light Hope, a weapon of some kind, panic. Light Hope has repeatedly tried to push Adora to ignore and not care about her friends or other people and just focus on being She-ra. - Mara pulled Etheria away to keep "everyone" safe, warns of death and destruction if found, its needs to stay hidden for the good of the universe. It's almost deliberately ambiguous enough to make a case that Etheria was either the source of the destruction or so powerful that it sparked massive conflict and war over control of it. It's not even clear if Light Hope is shaping up as an antagonist or she's just a lawful neutral AI that doesn't regard using the power of Etheria as a problem for defense or attack.

I wonder how profitable this and Voltron are. I haven't been too tied into the current genre of sophisticated cartoons like Adventure Time and Steven Universe so I dont really know how well they do as IP in general. Watching Voltron the first season was a clear attempt to follow the original formula and they quickly jettisoned it to tell and epic and far reaching saga in 7 seasons. She-Ra being 5 seasons is I hope deliberate because aside from the typical "netflix cancels everything good" if they back away from the dreamworks collabs that's pretty dire for animated shows in general. I'm still salty that Tuca and Bertie only got one season.

You'd think chuds would at least complain about the presence of gay or nonbinary characters, but the people who hate this show not only haven't watched it, they seem to know literally nothing about it. Chuds live and die by an idea that the world is a homogenous set of circumstances and experiences identical to their own and any portrayal or depiction of something other then that is a deliberate attempt to exterminate their culture. Actual reality isn't something they bother to check up on.

Kind of a weak season but a solid finale, it really couldn't have ended better. Definitely felt like a lot was rushed to get everything/one in place for the final battle. Great writing in the last 2 episodes, they packed in everything at the end and it felt like it would never stop or let up. Mermista: *sees Hordak "So we're all just okay with this now?"

Axel Serenity posted:I'm sad this show is over, but I'm really glad it was made. It's a rather outstanding show as a whole. I read about Legend of Korra recently and that was hugely important as one of the only examples of positive queer representation in youth focused animated shows. She-ra takes that way up to including transpersons as treated just like nbd and a typical part of their society. This was a major improvement over Voltron in so many ways, from the faster pace to a tighter focus on making the relationships feel so more real and organic.

Axel Serenity posted:Korra is one of my all-time favorites, and She-Ra takes its torch to show what it could have been without the shackles of Nickelodeon. On that note the Korra franchise is continued by one of the original creators in comic form and is ongoing, and he leaned all the way into the lesbian relationship because the 2 creators fully intended that but could only do so much on a Nick cartoon show. I just recalled that when the episode aired tumblr loving exploded and the wiki articles got locked down as a ton of people kept insisting there's was nothing queer about it and eventually the creators had to say "yeah, they're together now" Some good articles already out spoiling the ending but uh quote:As far back as season one, She-Ra established a queer relationship between two other princesses called Netossa and Spinnerella, while also hinting at what was to come for Adora and Catra. How dense would you have to be to "missed it"? Article also interviews Noelle, she apparently had to fight tooth and nail to get the story she wanted told and got a lot of pushback for what eventually came out. pentyne fucked around with this message at 00:57 on May 16, 2020 |

Shipping wars are nothing new they go back to Star Trek Spock x Kirk but with She-ra you'd have to be really, really dense to not pick up on how deep the personal feelings ran for most of the main pairings even the non-romantic. Nothing swerved or came out of nowhere it's all easily explainable in a reading from the characterization all the way back to S1. Except maybe Entrapa and Hordak, but only because they don't share appreciable screen time until season 3. Also, am I the only one who thinks the timeline for S5 must be like nigh a year or so? So much happens between ep 1 and the finale it's impossible its a matter of weeks more like months, it makes the redemption arc much more plausible in the time frame.

There's an amazingly ludicrous sequence in one episode where she uses the sword to cut a lake out of the ground by the lakebed, then picks the lake up and hurls it so that the water spills out to extinguish a burning town, the hollowed out lakebed landing without incident on the other side. That lake thing seems legit like something Adora would've tried before someone had to talk her down to a more reasonable option.

CuwiKhons posted:There was no way she would. She and Horde Prime are the only villains on the show that were never victims themselves, they just victimized others. They don't get redemption for that. Also a pretty classic symptom of abuse, being convinced that you can work and do something to gain their love and affection. It seems weird to say "yeah that alien general waging a war of conquest and murder across the planet? Victim of horrific cult abuse doing the only thing he understands" but it's kind of how it shakes out.

oh but seriously I posted:Its fun & gay but it is also a kid's show about magic princesses. Its not Das Boot "Kids show" as a category has expanded so widely since the 2000s it's almost a disservice to use it to compare things like Spongebob and Avatar in the same space. Since Avatar TLA proved you could make a serialized story heavy cartoon show on Nick good enough that both kids, young adults, and parents could all enjoy it there's been a push for more and better. Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Regular Show, Adventure Time etc. all have a lot going on to the point where grown adults are writing 5000 word treatise about single episodes and comparing it to philosophy or classic literature and they're not exactly wrong about it. The recent Voltron series is another example. Season 1 was all robots fighting big monsters and one off episode adventures then it changed rapidly to epic spanning space opera with drama and tragedy. Add to that, a lot of the classic "Hayes code" equivalents of what childrens' cartoons are banned from showing have been rolled back to where now a normalized depiction of a happy gay couple is fine and reasonable and trans representation is even allowed. I think Double Trouble was always referred to as "they/them" in the entire show. pentyne fucked around with this message at 20:49 on May 28, 2020 |

Tenebrais posted:It's easy to read Catra and Adora as sisters, having grown up together and been raised by the same parent figure and even dealing with abusive family dynamics. While I like the way their relationship went, something more familial would make just as much sense. Even in S1 it's obvious it's way more then just family from the sheer level of emotion Catra puts out specifically about Adora leaving her and getting other friends. The level of possessiveness alone is enough to go "wait, this isn't normal" no matter what you read off it. It's like a reverse Superntural, it's very easy to figure out Sam and Dean are each other's only family and they don't have non-work friends, but they're 100% not gay for each other despite what the fan-base obsesses over. Watermelon Daiquiri posted:Honestly I just saw that as Catra torpedoing -herself- due to adora's perceived abandonment and rejection. It takes a while to get through those kind of feelings and in the meantime reminders can hurt like gently caress so all you want is to make it go away. Everything about Adora from S1-S4 was Catra always acting irrationally as soon as Adora became a factor and borderline obsessed with showing her up or proving she doesn't need her. The constant attempt to go "look how great I'm doing now" feels like something you see 99% of the time when it comes to a romantic love relationship and not a broken platonic one. The kind of self destruction is linked to a lot deeper issues then "my sister has new friends"
