I just finished season 1 after a friend highly recommended the show.

A few stray thoughts:

- My very first thought upon seeing Glimmer was "whoa, I've never seen a girl with that shape in a cartoon before" even though it's really common.
- Bow is hilarious. I about lost it when he ripped the midriff off his prom outfit.
- I absolutely love how inclusive this show is with regards to fashion; girls in poofy dresses, girls in armor, girls in tuxedos, girls in skintight off-the-pincer slinky dresses, plus Bow's bare stomach. Also there are hearts on the bottom of Bow's boots. ON THE BOTTOM! Dude knows how to stick with a theme.
- Catra is easily the best character on the show so far. She's clearly the show's second main character, which owns.
- All three of the main good guys (Adora, Glimmer, and Bow) are are kind of bland in comparison. Both Glimmer and Adora have issues they work through, but they're not explored nearly as deeply as Catra's.
- God drat, can you keep track of the loving sword between scenes? Please? I lost track of how many times I thought Adora left it behind only for it to magically be in her hand or on her back after leaving it on the ground somewhere.
- Scorpia and Entrapta are both awesome in completely different ways.
- I'm totally picking up romantic vibes between Catra (who is suppressing them) and Adora (who is oblivious), right?
- This show made me so gay I wrapped back around to straight.
- I want the action scenes to be so much more fluid than they are. I miss the choreography from Avatar.
- With all the care that's gone into showing the conflict between Catra and Adora as a multifaceted, layered set of overlapping issues, you'd think they could also manage a little subtlety into wrapping up the adventure of the week, but nope. Show has a REAL bad habit of just pulling out "the heroes win!" without making it feel earned.
- The "stuck in the First Ones temple" episode was the best of the season. More of that please.
- The prom episode was also great. Both of the villains had amazing outfits for the ball.

I'm gonna start season 2 tomorrow and will post some more stray thoughts when I have the time.

I forgot about the lack of object permanence but lol yeah She-Ra is a great show but absolutely loaded with scenes where people don't pick up objects and are suddenly carrying them again in the next shot.

Okay I'll just try to ignore it, or pretend it's just one of those things that's always there unless the plot demands otherwise.

Gonna start S2 right now.

It’s slow going over here, but I finished season 2! In fact I’m a few episodes into season 3 because I didn’t realize we hit a finale whoops.

More stray thoughts.

Catra’s voice actress is amazing. The scorn, the taunts, the mocking laugh, the hurt, the anger...she’s got some range.

Also I can’t be the only one who loves the way she says “Hey Adora” can I?

Swift Wing (wind?) is hilarious and under used.

Entrapta is my favorite princess by a country mile. She’s deliberately written a bit autistic, right? I can just imagine some little kid with autistic tendencies watching her and being totally enraptured. (Please tell me if I’m using the wrong words here, I’m not deliberately being insensitive, but I don’t have a lot of experience with folks with this particular set of traits)

Glimmer still annoys me, but less than before.

Holy poo poo Bow has two dads and they both own.

Holy poo poo he had to rip the midriff off to fight lol.

Holy poo poo this is a coming out episode isn’t it? Even though he has two dads. That’s good poo poo.

Entrapta and Hordak...are bonding? And Hordak has no game. I feel seen.

I’m glad we’ve moved away from adventure of the week to a more serialized story.

God drat did Shadow Weaver do a number on Catra. And I kinda like this enemy of my enemy thing she’s setting up.

Portals? Please tell me we get some He Man characters in here. If Skeletor shows up I’m gonna die of happiness. (Actually don’t tell me)

Glimmer...sigh. One episode she’s badass and competent in a fight. The next she’s blindly hurling sparkle balls. The next she is badass again. Then sparkle balls. Sigh.

Scorpia is way too nice for the horde. I love how they managed to make her both kind of dumb but also really competent when given direct tasks. Except when suddenly she doesn’t know how to lead a crew despite being a force captain. She went through the orientation and everything, people.

Everything about the episode with Tongue Lashor was great. Everything.

From interviews, we’ve learned that Entrapta wasn’t initially intended to be written as autistic but one of the crew asked if she was, because *he* was autistic and her behaviour seemed really familiar. So they decided that yeah, it tracks that Entrapta is, and so they involved him in helping to write her that way, so she would be more realistic and relatable.

This is great.

Finished season three last night. Apparently I was already halfway through it when I posted my s2 thoughts.

“You made your choice. Now live with it!” gently caress yeah!

Scorpia continues to be too drat nice for the horde. Is it widely known she’s a princess? It seems that she would directly undermine horde propaganda about princesses.

Autocorrect keeps trying to say horse when I type horde so expect that typo to pop up a few times.

The collapsing reality episode was amazing.

I will never get tired of Bow’s commitment to a bare midriff. I love that’s how he realized that reality was all hosed up.

I am ashamed at how long it took me to connect the queen’s name with the fact that she’s literally angelic in appearance.

“I’m a coward” is another great line. In fact, this episode did more to make me like the queen than the entire show up to his point.

Jesus Christ all their names are literal aren’t they? Every one of them.

Finished Season 4.

More random thoughts:

-Glimmer gets a new look and a power upgrade! Finally.
-Not a fan of the weird rift between Adora and Glimmer. Really not a fan of how it continues to grow so far out of proportion. It's the worst part of the season, IMO.
-I really love everything about Mara's story.
-Omg Double Trouble's over-the-top theater kid persona is glorious.
-gently caress yeah, Kyle is kind of a badass? I hope he gets a good ending.
-Scorpia is now officially a princess. She was already the best princess, now it's just For Real.
-You know, I'm kind of glad that Catra spent an entire season slowly driving everyone away and coming to realize that she's hosed up. Double Trouble's speech to her at the end, "maybe the problem is you," wouldn't have hit so hard if Catra didn't know it already.
-The Razz episode miiiiiight be my favorite of the season. The way it constantly shifts in time is great. WTF is up with Razz though? She was a crazy old lady even back in Mara's day. How's she still here?
-Hordak is really growing on me as a tragic character. His broken heart over Entrapta's betrayal humanizes him way more than I would have ever expected. And then to be thrown out by Horde Prime? Ouch.
-Bow's impassioned speech about friendship to Entrapta owns, especially when she really DGAF. I love Entrapta.
-Speaking of Entrapta, I really relate to how she deals with emotional trauma. I constantly struggle to make sense of my emotions, and it's often easier for me to shift into an analytical mode than to directly face them. She's way more extreme than I am, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a character on TV struggle anywhere close to the way I do before.
-Huh, Glimmer's dad is alive.
-I love that nobody really won at the climax. Adora broke the sword, but didn't stop the dimensional shift.
-Horde Prime is gonna be a fun villain.
-gently caress, Season 5 is the last season isn't it?

I just realized I never posted my S5 thoughts! I finished the show a couple weeks ago, and I really enjoyed it.

-I think the show peaked in Seasons 3 and 4.

-I, sadly, never quite bought that everyone was willing to support Catra's redemption. I 100% bought that Catra herself was truly sorry, but I never could wrap my head around how everyone could believe her about it. I feel that Catra burned every bridge beyond repair, except maybe with Scorpia. This slightly tainted my opinion of most of the season, and is the sole reason I put it below Seasons 3 and 4. If I could turn my brain off and just accept it...

-Horde Prime was a great villain. I loved when he was threatening Glimmer over dinner.

-Shadow Weaver's last line, "you're welcome," was deliciously snarky.

-Hordak's "I have a name." was so. loving. Good.

-I'm so happy Hordak and Entrapta got another shot. Easily my favorite couple on the show.

-Wrong Hordak is delightful.

-Assimilated Catra has a cool design, and her fight with Adora was one of the most emotionally charged scenes in the show. So good.

-Scorpia is the best princess and so is Entrapta. All other opinions are wrong.

-Netossa's plan to take down all the princesses owns. I love that it's like 80% "fire". I guess she's secretly Batman?

-Omg I love invisible cat thing. Never did catch its name. Such a cool design.

-Spinny is powerful! Why the hell weren't they using her before now? She's easily up there with Mermista, who I considered the most powerful princess. Well, other then Scorpia, who just wrecks everything, often by accident.

-Did I read the "I love you" scene between Bow and Glimmer right, that it was totally platonic (at least on Bow's side)?

-Whoa, that sure was a Big Gay Kiss. Bravo for the show going there, explicitly.

-I'm disappointed we didn't get even one He-Man episode. I was hoping that She-Ra would show up, save the day in a completely over-the-top manner with ease, and swoop out. Even if He-Man himself wasn't there, it would have been amazing to have She-Ra interact with his supporting cast and set some groundwork for an eventual spinoff series.

-Honestly, I really just wanted one scene of Skeletor being a huge jerk for no reason and laughing about it. The laugh is key.

-Please tell me they're gonna make a He-Man series, or a She-Ra sequel with him and his cast.

This is almost the default canon now. Jedi Fallen Order has a ton of scripted conversations between the stormtrooper enemies that have them acting like that. There's one with one stormtrooper poo poo talking another for shooting a rocket too close and blowing out his eardrums and a lot of casual banter about not being able to aim properly.

It is straight up canon, as the final episode of Mandalorian had something straight out of that old-rear end TROOPS short.

Korra's first response to any problem is to punch it, and she never outgrows that. I don't know if that's the same thing as stupid, but, yeah. It's often the wrong response.

Yeah, from what I’ve found it seems the stock answer for why they don’t like the show is “they changed too much” as well as some calling it an “abomination” or “She-Ra in name only”. A lot of them also get really pissy when you try to challenge them on this.

"It changed too much" is just a code phrase for bigotry, more often than not. What they're really saying is "This show is too gay."

Bigots love to hide behind flimsy excuses when they're too cowardly to outright say why they really don't like it.

There are some for whom the show doesn't live up to whatever impossible-to-meet and vaguely-defined expectations they had, but most of them? It's just that they hate how gay the show is.

That music choice is either absolute genius or absolute madness. I'm here for it either way.

I have hope that they'll do Skeletor justice. His defining feature, to me, is how he delighted in being the biggest rear end in a top hat in the room. Just absolute joy at stealing someone's thunder, ruining their day, or just generally being a dick. If anyone can pull that off, it's Hamil.
