Holy Moly! DARKSEID IS!

Binged the entire show tonight with my sister who is a decade younger. Followed up by showing her Flowers for Hordak, a later episode from the original series and easily one of the best. There are multiple elements from that single episode that appear to be huge inspirations for the whole season, the biggest being Shadow Weaver using a “dark ruby” to destroy the Whispering Woods. Frankly based on that alone any fascist whining about ess-jay-dubbayahs “ruining” the original show have not watched or studied the show, at all, period.

There are a couple nods and deep cuts in there, like when Razz mentions Loo-Kee and his face shows up on a folding fan, or early in the prom episode the Star Sisters are mentioned, three minor characters that were shown off for the toy line but never produced.

While it’s very subtle I feel like there’s a distant Jack Kirby Forth World feel to the show, especially with how Adora and Catra are forced to confront their relationship. In another world we’d have the same beginnings but with Scott Free and Kalibak, or Big Barda and Lashina.

I just watched Flowers For Hordak and the skeleton's have ruined the show with their dark and gritty reboot which over focuses on realism compared to the original.

Mr Pibblekins needs something beautiful in their lives ;)

Didn't Mermistra blush when looking at she'ra pretty hard? Also the "this lady can turn into a 8' tall amazon with a sword and I want her on my team."

Yes. Just like Bow was all blushy and starry-eyed at Sea Hawk’s antics.

Speculation based on the original cartoon - an episode reveals there’s an underground city of “Magicats” that Catra infiltrates and tries to sway to the Horde/herself because she resembles their long-lost queen. Turns out her headpiece that allows her to transform is stolen magi-tech Hordak provided her and the real queen is imprisoned in the Fright Zone. She-Ra frees queen kitty and Catra is ousted.

Catra being a stolen princess/bloodline ala the Empire stealing force-sensitive kids to ensure they’re lost in Stormtrooper ranks wouldn’t surprise me

I think it comes down to the aforementioned pencil mileage (which largely seemed used in the prom episode, tons of background characters that in theory are nobility or royalty though) as well as the original being a He-Man spinoff where the idea the Horde was subjugating innocent people was already established. There’s an episode where the Sorceress tells He-Man her own backstory: she was an average villager who risked everything and gave up normal life to take up the mantle and protect people. One of the better flashbacks imo.

“Adult” collectors can afford an adult price point, aka it’s total BS when Marvel Legends are still ~$20, are highly articulated/posable, and in the last few years reasonably resemble the actors portraying the character in the case of MCU versions. Also “toy” versus “collectible” and perception of said purchaser to coworkers/customers, even though for around the same price or a little more you can find quality nerdy statues/character busts instead, or commission art in that very common price range from any number of awesome artists.

Source: I still have way too much crap in storage from my 20s and early 30s.

I grew up with He-Man and She-Ra, I assure you any whining from Nazi chudbros is because 1) it’s a desperate attempt to get clicks/ad revenue, 2) they know they’re beaten and they resent. For all the disgusting harassment from these men it’s from a place of fear obfuscated by pathetic fury over a cartoon that will normalize a variety of sexualities and body types to people who aren’t them. These guys ought to be mocked, ignored, and ostracized until they choose to become better people - which had they bothered watching the original shows perhaps they’d learn something about not being a hateful jackass. Even Skeletor saves a couple kids in the Christmas special ffs.

I wonder what the overlap of these guys versus bronies is considering that gross group looked down on the original show, in part because the character design was larger-bodied and the stories weren’t as “deep.” :jerkbag:

The complaints are also silly because from a practical standpoint same body types meant just one mould you could think give different hair and accessories. Even as a kid I recognized that!

There’s a documentary series on Netflix where they speak to creators/designers/marketers of well-known toy lines and the He-Man episode mentioned taking care to make Prince Adam kind and caring on the cartoon for basically that reason.

Skeletor always read as Hordak's bitchy Ex to me.

I want to say Hordak gave Skeletor the original marching orders to Eternia which of course Skeletor promptly ignored/focused on his personal superiority. I think if he had gotten a hold of Grayskull’s power he’d immediately turn on Hordak and Horde Prime.

Adora was not bland but felt more blank slate to me as a character coming out of an abusive home life as a child soldier who know little else other than very vague memories as a toddler(? - we’re unsure when she was stolen). But no chemistry with Catra?

The varying power levels is a callback to the original series as well as a comedy thing. I do think Swift Wind was a bit disjointed and makes me wonder if there was more of them in between the first to second appearance that was cut at some point given a first season budget.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm a little surprised there hasn't been more nazi attention on She-ra, she's pretty drat Aryan ubermensch. 8 feet tall, blonde hair, etc.

Adora keeps company with people of all races, genders, and sizes. Her behavior - even initially when still indoctrinated by a Horde upbringing - is anathema to any stripe of bigot. She’s willing to admit she’s ignorant and wrong.
