At least in America, it's actually 3 months! A year long contract and then a 3 month break is the maximum amount of time a contractor can work without being considered a "real" employee and thus require benefits.

At least that was the time like a decade ago when I worked at places that were lovely enough to exploit that, it coulda changed by now.

The games industry has been like that for years, basically that testing agency now has nothing to do but sit around and wait to be hired by another dev, so they always lay everyone off. Devs tend to do the same because they have to get a contract with another publisher. It's why there were so many games "from the developers of World of Warcraft.." just after that game released; Blizzard laid off a bunch of coders who weren't needed for maintenance.

Do we actually know anything about game testing as a job in Japan other than comparing it to the lovely American and Euro equivalents? Could be like in a lot of jobs over there it's seen as a shameful display (wrote it properly this time) to have to fire employees just because.
Maybe NEET gets shuffled over to clean a gym or an arcade?
