Christmas Greetings from the big nonce island.

The Ranters - Christmas Carol posted:

They prate of God; believe it, fellow-creatures,
There’s no such bugbear; all was made by Nature.
We know all came of nothing, and shall pass
Into the same condition once it was,
By Nature’s power; and that they grossly lie
That say there’s hope of immortality.
Let them but tell us what a soul is, then
We will adhere to these mad brain-sick men.

Abdukhaliq - The Uyghur posted:

Arise. Time is at hand.
It is very close.
Stand up, brothers. Do you want to die lying there?
We now face our deepest winter.
Arise.
Time is very short but we still have time.
If we miss this chance,
The winter will freeze our lives.

In The News :sax:
• British academic Matthew Hedges is jailed for life for spying in the UAE and then pardoned with immediate effect, in a surely non-corrupt series of events.
• The United Nations criticises the government's "punitive, mean-spirited, and often callous approach" to the poor and vulnerable, writing that levels of child poverty are "not just a disgrace, but a social calamity and an economic disaster."
• Jo Johnson, of the slang-for-penis Johnsons, resigns from the Cabinet and calls for a fresh referendum on Brexit, including an option to remain in the EU.
• Theresa May secures Cabinet support for her Brexit Withdrawal Agreem... ahahah no half the cowards resign or threaten to immediately after.
• Disgraced former Home Secretary Amber Rudd returns to the Cabinet as Disgraced Secretary of State for Work and Pensions
• After more than 18 months of negotiations, EU leaders endorse the Brexit withdrawal agreement that Parliament is about to reject.
• Thousands of protesters block the five main bridges over the Thames in central London to raise awareness of climate change and biodiversity loss, although it doesn't seem to get much coverage.
• A report by the IPPR shows that Britain faces mass shortages of care workers over coming decades if current trends continue.
• Johnny Mercer MP has come out in support of direct violence (including killing) in defence of the oppressed/bullied/tormented/voiceless.
Less than 120 days until Brexit, have you started your shopping?

No!
Beer in cans is sometimes better, though it can depend on how it was aged/conditioned.
The main thing is that light is real bad for beer. Like, really bad. That's why Lime goes in Corona - it's to cover the taste of it being sun-spoiled, and is also why beer bottles are traditionally very dark colours.

There's other reasons why canned beer is as good, or sometimes better.

The key thing is pouring it into a glass though, or some cans now have got tops that open fully -

as a key thing about taste is smell, especially for fermented items.

To respond to DPRK from the last thread, anything interesting in post music these days is post-black metal poo poo, like Deafheaven and Wolves in the Throne Room to name 2. But obviously the black metal elements are a lot for most folk.

On the topic of ATP, yeah, it was great. The year I went I got to see J Mascis (don't think Dinosaur Jr were with him), The Breeders, The Magic Band of Captain Beefheart fame, and obviously a load of others. It's right up there for me with Supersonic in Brum for having just a nice chill atmosphere and an excitingly wide variety of bands to catch. I just love the vibe. Also having a proper bed to sleep in rather than lovely camping is such a huge deal.

I need a new festival in that style, it was a ballache getting to Minehead from Glasgow (overnight bus to Taunton that took an eternity) but worth it.

ATP was a transcendent experience. Loved all the ones I went to. It wasn't just about the beds, the setting and the shared apartments added so much to the experience on a practical and a social level. ATP TV wired at 5AM after watching some of the most exciting sad-bloke-wearing-all-black music imaginable.

Highlights:

1) Caribou playing all the old stuff in the afternoon then doing the euphoric Caribou Vibration Ensemble at night.
2) Boredoms.
3) Three hours of Joanna Newsom in a weekend.
4) Edwyn Collins with members of Belle & Sebastian, The Cribs and Franz Ferdinand as his backing band.
5) Weird Al Yankovic as relief in the middle of the bitter, cold wasteland of the GY!BE one.

Someone posted a series of tweets earlier detailing a look behind Mays cabinet that depicted Gove as a creature beyond mortal ken, a howling abyss of a monster that takes human form reluctantly to help impoverish the population of Britain and feed off their despair.

While it was funny I think we should take pains to not humanize Gove.

It's hard to teach someone to overcome their nature. You can force a left-handed person to write with their right hand, and you can teach a colony of anfractious star-slugs to clap, but you can only take these things so far.
