Carly shook her glass, willing the ice to melt. "You still haven't told me what the mission is."

She leaned forward. "We are going to assassinate the bad men of Hollywood."

Whenever people attempt to describe the actual gameplay of RDR2 it further presents the image of something I could never see myself playing. Like I can happily manage a whole bunch of tedious interconnected systems if the end result is a really cool Lightning build and not like, catching a 3lb fish. And if I want mundane slice of life stuff with lots of dialogue I'll just go load up my walky sims.

I'm playing more Persona and right now I'm at the point in P3P where I don't know if I should restart on Normal or just play through the game on Easy. Also the plot doesn't seem to have actually started yet (I'm in like June)

It's really hard to understand why it's enjoyable. I guess it's "immersive"

Everything I have read and seen about RDR2 further cements that I will not buy or enjoy the game. GTA4 and GTA5 were unfun slogs to me.

Which, by the way, is GOTY

Why specifically super nintendo

I know there's a lot of people out there who think JRPGs peaked with chrono trigger and ff6 and I seriously don't get it. This may be a non sequitur if your reason for wanting SNES is something else

I tried replaying Chrono Trigger on the DS a few years ago and came away thinking it was a "you had to be there" thing.

Unlike Earthbound which is still really good.

I last played CT a couple of years ago, and I think it holds up as a pretty good game but probably not one that can still shoulder the weight of being The Best JRPG of all time, given the 2+ decades of the genre following it.

I'm at the point in Hollow Knight where I could end the game, but I want to get the true ending and check out some of the DLC. The Switch is a great place for this, and it's definitely in my top ten for this year. For whatever reason, I really like the conceit of exposition via an ability that lets you read people's minds.

It would also be greatly improved with an across the board enemy health reduction and abolishing boss runs.

It's a good game OP, and if you do "bad" ending and your save will put you right in front of the final boss so you can do everything for the true ending.

Also if you hate boss runs then don't do any of the DLC lol

Thanks now I'm really sad

DQ11 is a return to form for JRPGs imo

It's old school but also feels like it was made by modern human beings

Only a game as weightless and effervescent as Final Fantasy X-2 could possibly shoulder such a heavy burden.

This but unironically for a reason I think is valid- I still like jRPGs, what I don't like is that in the PS2+ eras, jRPGs had the modern benefit of nigh-infinite storage and fidelity, meaning that these games could now be BLOATED SICK with developers going ham with endless loving cutscenes, voice acting, awful anime models, nonstop meandering, all of that poo poo that they couldn't get away with in the PS1- eras, where it had to be a snappier game with limited space and assets. Plenty of great jRPGs still, but I just don't loving have the patience for how glutted they've become on the things I liked least, but could put up with because there wasn't nearly as much of it before. Give me something succinct that has zero voice acting, fewer cutscenes, dialogue I can get through fast as I read it, and a focus on good combat and cool locales over umpityfucktillion lines of text, and I'm in it to win it.

Do not give me your 200 hour epic that's 180 hours of braindead anime Z-list plots and the same team of hero/girl/underage girl/mascot/brooding older man who is actually 28/softcore porn older woman who is actually 25 and on and on and puuuuuuuuuuuuuke

I realized a couple of days ago that the only RPG I have finished in my life is Earthbound. Now I’ve gotta play some RPGs. I have a bunch of SMT games on my 3DS and Final Fantasy 7 on PS4 so I have work to do.

Also I'm pretty sure old JRPGs were just as "bloated" it's just that they mostly did that with grinding, random encounters, and dungeons that looked like peano curves instead of stupid long cutscenes

Maybe it's an audience thing but I definitely feel like games like Persona could do with an editor. I guess maybe the core target audience likes 100+ hours of that but give me a tight 30 hours

Similarly, as much as I like AssCreedOdd, I just know that like with Origins at some point I'm gonna be like "okay okay I don't want to be playing this game for literally ever"

That's why God of War worked so well, it didn't feel bloated at all

the Vita's library isn't too shabby either considering the backlog of digital PSP and PS1 games you can play on it

honestly the lack of backlog is the one thing I dislike about the Switch (and the PS4 to a lesser extent), it's more egregious with Nintendo because suddenly Virtual Console isn't a thing
