I just realized I actually see Andrew Scheer every time I think of Nonis and that may be giving Nonis too much credit.

It absolutely should.
It's like their only means of negotiating from a slight position of power because RFA is hosed up.

I think this will still mostly be curbed by cultural pressure and expediency (and the desire to actually go to work) for many young players. Maybe a few more will do it. If it becomes more than a few you can bet the rules will just get changed to prevent it.

That seems to be the philosophy for this season, its worked out decently. I've just been waiting for years for the Leafs to fix up our porous defense and it doesn't seem to be happening any time soon.

I don't know that this was an option they had here, in this particular circumstance.

Only three teams have allowed fewer goals against than the Leafs this season.

The Leafs have $23.2M in cap space next year, plus an additional $5.3M LTIR space, and that’s if the cap doesn’t increase at all.

I could see this if Lou or Nonis was still in charge, but Dubas basically just put on a masterclass in negotiation and has done well in TO thus far.

Yeah, in the salary cap era you can only afford to be elite in one or the other. When you look at the defence the Pens won the cup with, you know.

We're actually really happy with Kapanen + Dermott tbh, but sure maybe you can look forward to a 30 year old Nylander playing alongside Hughes (or whomever the next generation player ends up being).
