100% serious post. One of my friends moved into an apartment with a setup like this when she got married, and the bottom half of the staircase retracted when you flipped a switch in the kitchen. When they bought the place, it was billed as a wine cellar, and they used it to store off-season stuff as they were both outdoorsy-types and it was nice to have a place in the apartment to store kayaks, camping gear, and the like. She and her husband were concerned about the fact that there was no apparent way to get out if you accidentally got locked in there, and I told them I would be glad to wire up a three-way switch so there was a way to get out in case someone accidentally got stuck.

If you're feeling a sense of dread, you exactly where this is going; they looked up records on the property and the previous owner defaulted on the lease after being convicted on multiple counts of sexually assaulting minors (multiple victims, not multiple counts with one victim) and charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment.

Yep, it's this. Called it, OP. Ghosts are invisible so the boxes would look empty but things are about to get freaky.

There's a section of my town that was at one point a dumping ground for industrial waste. Decades later they build houses, a soccer field, and two schools on top of it. Unsurprisingly this because a controversy a little under 15 years ago when lots of people in that neighborhood got all seemed to have cancer and then they built and were opening the middle school on the land that was the soccer field. The neighborhood was confirmed to be contaminated with carcinogens. There were protests and things but it didn't delay anything for long and the school both opened and operates to this day.

Recently I came across a young woman who was very happy about her and her husband just buying a house in that neighborhood. Realtors don't give a gently caress if there's something wrong with the place.

That was only if there were valuables. Once I went down there I found the flaw with my plan. You can pull out a pin and lift the lower portion of the stairs to escape.

Yeah but you can reach the pin from outside after lifting the tread if you know where it is. I think it was added afterwards. I didn't actually need to cut that board out.
