The Original Flying Squid
|
This morning, I was going through a box of things my parents brought to me that they dug out of their attic and were going to toss out. They included lots of papers of both mine and my brother's. In the middle of it all was one of those old style extra-long dot matrix printouts with the green and white lines on it folded up. On the first page was printed:
code:J F B T 1 1 5 2
80/08/17 14-24-14
OUTPUT PRUS = 404
Wondering what it was, I continued on. The second page had:
code:21.13.48.**** NOTEPR VER 6.0 **** 80/08/12
NOTES FROM 80/08/07. TO 80/08/12.
The third page was a table of contents which I am not going to reproduce at this time simply because it's long and repetitive and I don't feel like typing it out.
It was a very long log of a program called Note written to run on DARPAnet (the precursor of the internet) mainframes from August of 1980. My brother was a high school freshman at the time, but he hung out a lot at the (one) Indiana University computer lab which is where he would have used the program. I have no idea which one of these people, if any, are my brother but I know who at least one of them was because it was his nickname in the real world too.
What's interesting to me about this is how some things are still the same. There are still gimmick posters, still trolls, etc.... and how some things are very different. There's no letter substitution (u for you) no 'l33t h4xx0r' typing, and most notably no smilies or other emoticons. This is the first of the logs. There are 25 more. If everyone likes them, I'll continue to post maybe one a week because I have to type each one in by hand and it's a pain to do it but I thought people might be interested. Let me know if you want to see more.
Also, I have attempted to preserve all formatting and typos as in the original document.

Note is M T. it looks like I got the first note for a long time.
Used to be able to get the first note a whole lot and this is the first
time in a couple of months. Does it mean my life is improved? That I
have been granted superiority over all beings? Possibly...Anyway, so
this note won’t be a total loss, I might as well say the first prototyp
s-ship will be ready for showing on the 12th (haapy birthday to me) but
it won’t be doing a whole lot. There are many, many things that have
gone untested and untried...

AUTHOR: Lazarus TIME: 11.44.48. DATE:80/08/08.
Sorry David. I put the message that Note would be
down for about 15 minutes (actually it was only 7) then started
the printer program, then cleared the c0mm0n (after I was sure
the printer program had a copy of the c0mm0n). That program
takes some time to run, so Note was up long before it was fin-
ished. Notout prints are now on 8859 ("and notout2"---Gelnda).

to write a lot of notes because I was tired. People willnot send
me good mail lots of time. Lots of times people send me those

I drive my little taxi. I made up my own kind of uniform because
I think they are neet. I like to ware blue jeans and a special
T-shirt that I had made. It says on the front Mr. Taxi and on
the back it says A Working Man. On the front I have a picture
of my little taxi. It cost a lot to make the shirt that way but
all my fares like it real good. I wear an old hat that I found
for cab drivers. It is like a policemans hat but it doesnot have
a badge on it. It says Mr. Taxi in the center of the hat instead.
It looks real good and my fares like that to. I think I have the
best little job in the whole world.

That's marvelous.
quote:Blixt wrote this in a previous episode of "goku: THE SERIES":
You clearly have no clue what you are talking about. There is a set number of "evil" in the world at all times. When a body with an "evil" soul dies, the soul moves on to an infant. It is possible to remove this taint with exorcism, although it is a very hard process that can leave the person dead. A few people who have been controlled by Satan is Hitler and Ghengis Khan.

that's not a forum log. if it were from an actual forum, it would have included at least one link to an ASCII goatse.
If you cross Fox News Channel, it's not just me, it's [Fox President] Roger Ailes who will go after you. I'm the street guy out front making loud noises about the issues, but Ailes operates behind the scenes, strategizes and makes things happen so that one day BAM! The person gets what's coming to them but never sees it coming. Look at Al Franken, one day he's going to get a knock on his door and life as he's known it will change forever. That day will happen, trust me.

Yeah, well in 1980 you actually had to be intelligent in order to use a computer, especially a networked one.
Also, Mr. Taxi gets weirder later but to give him credit, he never does actually let up his gimmick.
EDIT: Yes, I have a scanner but it's six years old and hence REALLY SLOW. Plus, OCR would add errors whereas my typing can be double-checked to ensure that only the original typos are represented.

I was planning on scanning in a couple example pages just to show what it's like. I'll do that when I get to my office where the scanner is. Would that work for you?

On groups.google.com they have a section for historical usenet posts. I think the earliest message they have archived is from 1981. They also have the first post where someone uses ASCII smiles, and I think it was from 1983 or something. This is very interesting.

Well... turns out that everyone really is on the internet. After crossposting this on a local forum I frequent, it was replied to by the actual guy who wrote it! It wasn't actually part of ARPAnet which doesn't strictly make it part of internet history but since it is a format which has become commonplace on the internet now (although it's evolved) and it was from a network which eventually itself became part of the internet, I think it still counts. Here's the message I got on the other forum:
quote:How nostalgic. "Note" is a program that I wrote in roughly 1978 for the CDC 6600/172 mainframe. It was written in the COMPASS assembly language.
I would appreciate getting copies of anything you have. In particular, I lost the source code to the system (although I still have hope that it's on one of the 9-track reels I have in the computer museum).
I can give you some background on the characters mentioned there.
Lazarus was/is one John Bayh who left Bloomington in about 1981 to go out to Silicon Valley and work for HP (where he still is as far as I know).
JAD lived in Merrillville and accessed the system through IUNW. Mr. Taxi was Bill (William) Mihalo. He taught sociology also at IUNW.
David is David Roth who went to Columbus to work for AT&T. I recently got an email from him.
"Greg" mentioned is me. 8859 was my account on the CDC.
The system had nothing to do with DARPA and was about as far from the Internet as you could get.
greg
Bloomington is Bloomington, Indiana about 50 miles south of Indianapolis where Greg and I both live and where IU's main campus is. IUNW is, as you probably guessed, the Northwest campus of Indiana University and Merrillville is practically a suburb of Chicago. So, even if this was a limited network, it still had a several hundred mile range.

How much would it suck to get called a newb by someone with a 8/80 registration date?
On a side note, its probably pretty likely that the source code greg is looking for on those 9 track reels is still there. When I used to work in the network center at my school they had a library of those things. There is some weird law where they have to store stuff like that for 20 years, despite the fact that there is nowhere you can actually buy a reader. On slow days I would have to respool them.

'Sup guys? I just went to Chess King and got the raddest parachute pants. They
were playing Duran Duran and I thought that was too New Wave for me, but I stayed
long enough to get a PCH vest.
I bet I spent 5 dollars in quarters playing Space Invaders today. I like it more
than pinball, even though pinball is only a dime. Have you heard anything about
Pac Man? I think Eastland mall is getting one.
So the Space Shuttle seems interesting. I like the tiles idea. Let's just hope
they don't keep falling off!
I got a raise today. $2.60 an hour. If the new Mustangs are $8,500 how long will
it take me to pay that off? Oh, yea! That reminds me! My brother just turned 18
so he is going to the 7-11 to buy beer today! He also got a job with Eastern
Airlines! So we're celebrating. He seems to be getting over that weird pneumonia
he got from that Hatian flight attendant. Let's hope!
Well, I'm going to the Record Bar. I need a stylus for my turntable. And I think
I'm going to pick up an AC/DC album. FOUR DOLLARS! God, you can see them live for
that much!
