Corsair
PP: 2>0, XP: 0>1

Resource: Looted Shi'ar Hand Cannon d10

It seemed the Starjammers were not the only ones with plans involving Kelestra, although it remained to be seen if the disguised woman and her "friends" were after anything in the Spire. Whatever they were after, they were drawing the attention of everyone onboard the station, which meant it was a perfect opportunity for Corsair and Rachel (...assuming he could find her).

"Well, Miss Whoever-You-Are, as much as I appreciate your 'professional courtesy', I have my own plans. As I'm sure you know, I am the legendary Corsair, leader of the Starjammers! I've fought my share of pirates, done a good bit of pirating of my own, and have helped determine the fate of stellar empires more than once. I'm certain your friends are quite capable, but it would be best for them to stay out of my way."

Moving a hand to the phasing jewels on his gloves, Corsair withdraws both a boarding sword and a large Shi'ar hand cannon he had "requisitioned" some time ago. "If you'll excuse me, seeing as this casino is in no shape for anymore games, it's time for me to get to work." He was still worried about Rachel, but he needed to trust she could handle herself. She was an official Starjammer, after all.

Spending a PP (I'm assuming I got 1 in exchange for my two earlier opportunities adding a d8 to the doom pool) to create a "Looted Shi'ar Hand Cannon" d8 combat resource, and then spending my last PP to boost it to a d10. If the mysterious woman doesn't try to stop me, I'll leave the casino to see what's going on (and maybe take advantage of the chaos to slip into the Spire, but it's probably not that easy).

Also hit my 1 xp trigger for playing up my reputation.

Wisecracks. An old vice from her X-Men days, but an irresistible one. If you didn't say or do something obnoxious while you hit somebody, what was even the point? And when you had the drop on someone as thoroughly as Jubilee did right now, that made it all the sweeter. Life was for having fun, and if you could ruin the day of somebody evil in the process, all the better.

Hovering behind the figure, she leans over and gently taps him on the left shoulder, whispering, "Hey, you shouldn't touch that" into his ear from inches away. Almost simultaneously, she drifts right and throws a right hook at his head. The old looking-over-the-wrong-shoulder trick. Never failed to get a laugh.

Rocket Racoon
PP:2 XP:0

Rocket mostly stands his ground as the two fire on him, though he shifts his position so the two pirates are firing on the bulkiest part of his armor. The first one manages to break past his armor and scorch his fur, but the second's shot ding off and smacks into a nearby sign. Rocket let's out a roar, as silly as that most sound coming from a two foot tall racoon standing on his hind legs.

"Where you boys get your guns?" Rocket asks, drawing his oversized weapons that definitely did compensate for the fact he couldn't ride any rides at an amusement park. " Galactic Toybox? This is a gun!

Doom Pool buys two opportunities to go to 0/3/1/0/0.

Top Deck

As Jubilee got close to the spindly mechanic figure, she could tell it was wearing some kind of heavy goggles that were displaying a stream of information as he dug around in the innards of the beam. A quick flash on his heads up display alerted him to her presence, and while it didn't allow him to get out of the way, it did give him the chance to brace against the blow, which likely saved him from taking a plunge to the ground. Spitting out what sounded like an alien swear word, the mechanic then immediately flipped down to hang by dextrous feet, dangling upside down as he drew a sparking prod of some sort from his belt. Maybe it was a tool, maybe it was a weapon, but either way, it looked like it would be pretty nasty if it made contact with skin. His unexpected flexibility allowed him to come around with unexpected force as he swung with a nearly-half circle of motion at his hips. Jubilee was suddenly facing a counter-attack.

The Mechanic rolls a 15 with d8 effect so takes stress stepped up. He moves to counter attack with his zappy thing. Not as good a roll here, only a 12, but with a d10 effect

The Spoke

What the rest of the heroes were seeing was nothing compared to what was going on around the Spoke. With a single boarding pod enough to cause alarm for any right-minded void-dweller, the veritable swarm of them that had attached themselves to Kelestra's most lucrative district was enough to start an utter bedlam. Boarders of all sorts were piling out onto the concourse. Some were dragging cables behind them to one central, larger pod directly above the imposing, polished chrome doors to the Spire itself, while others were attempting to push back anyone attempting to get in their way. Each casino had also deployed its security force out front, both as a show to their guests and as a precaution in case these boarders decided they wanted an easier nut to crack. Some of them were clear professionals, dressed in tactical armor and watching the boarders with a steely eye, while others looked like accountants who'd been given a pistol and a vest and told to keep anyone out.

The Docks

The crowd of people mullin around were still trying to push their way out, and the extra time gave the boarders a split-second to think of a plan. "Doug!" Berz yelled to his Badoon buddy, "You got incoming, use the thing!"

"The thing?" Doug asked. "The Thing!" He quickly slapped at a datapad on his forearm and a burst of thrust fired from the back end of the cutter, cancelling out its momentum and causing it to drop to the deck with a clank. "I thought that was just for when you dropped things in zero-g work, but..."

"You can thank me later! Let's handle these jabronis and get back to work!" Berz cracked his neck in a way that suggested he was tough, rather than that he had problems with his spine, and raised his pistol menacingly.

Burning one of my D10s to make a tech stunt, Doug rolls a 14 with a d8 to avoid damage. Doom pool is 0/2/1/0/0

Bob frowns at the invading aliens. He hadn't expected Kelestra to be...low-key, obviously, but he'd only just arrived. Did this kind of thing just follow him everywhere? Closing his eyes, Bob uses his Uranian headband to try and infiltrate the smaller alien's mind, willing him to calm himself. Spider-Man would surely be able to handle the Badoon, but this 'Berz' looked like he had something to prove.

Jubilee takes a sharp intake of breath, nearly taken off guard by the alien's reaction speed. Key word: nearly. She kicks off the support beam and flips back towards the nearest wall, hitting it hard enough to crouch in place against it for a second. Then, grinning like a maniac, she boosts off the wall full-force and attempts a flying clothesline. It had been way too long since she'd been able to really take off the kid gloves, and she was having a blast. Part of her was still internally yammering about restraint and willpower, but... eh. That Jubilee didn't know how to have real fun.

I'm going to jump in with a guy since I guess Rocket's internet got taken back out by snow?

The Docks

The frantic mental noise of the crowd, combined with Berz' laser focus on combat, slammed into Bob like a brick wall. Or he slammed into it. Either way, he found himself shut out decisively. So decisively, in fact, that he didn't quite realize when the mechanic Doug had wheeled around and pointed to him. "That's the brainomancer!" He declared, quite erroneously. "I'll handle him!" He came whirling towards Bob, plasma cutter in hand, demonstrating his comprehensive disregard for workplace safety and, frankly, a disrespect for his tools.

Berz rolls 3d8 complication, old pro and buddy for 16 with d4 effect on reaction and follows it up with a 10 with a d8 for his attack roll. What say we tag Prestige, see if she can do something with their misdirection.

Top Deck

Doom Pool goes to 1/3/0/0/0 with those two opportunities. The mechanic rolls 15 with d8 effect to keep him in the fight for one more round!

Fighting this being reminded Jubilee of a toy she and many of her friends had as a child. It was an blow-up figure (hers was a gorilla vaguely reminiscent but legally distinct from Donkey Kong) with a rounded, weighted bottom. No matter how hard you hit it, it would just pop right back up a moment later. And while she eventually popped hers by trapping it under a couch and doing a cannonball onto it, this alien technician clearly refused to have all of his insides blow out the top of his head... which actually wasn't a bad thing, come to think of it.

That got really gross for a second. Moving on.

She hit him full force and he bent, and bent, and bent. It almost felt like she flew THROUGH him as his highly flexible joints allowed him to stay up once more. Looking at her with a desperate gleam visible even behind the large goggles he wore, the being fished inside the support beam and grabbed out a cable with a large metallic coupling on one end. He quickly stripped off parts of the metal device on the end and held up before her. "Hold it!" He commanded. "I've pulled all the resisters out of this cable! If you take one more step, I'll touch it to the ionic capacitor and start a cascading reaction that will irradiate this whole sector! The next barrier isn't for blocks!"

Is he bluffing? He seems to know technology and science stuff, which is why he has that d8 tech expert and d6 cyber senses in his pool, in addition to his d10 solo and his Gearhead distinction. It's... not very convincing, though. 7 with a d10 effect.

Jubilee
PP: 2 | XP: 1

Jubilee rolls out of her dive and back to her feet on the other side of the mechanic, feeling a little surprised (and annoyed) that he was still standing. Just how many joints did this species have? Her heart sinks and a little of the predatory fire goes out of her eyes when he starts threatening mass murder, though. She couldn't live with innocent lives on her conscience. She wasn't that far gone, at least not yet. Except... well, except this whole threat didn't make a whole lot of sense, did it? Jubilee was pretty sure radiation didn't work that way. Wait, did he seriously just try to stop her by threatening innocent lives with sci-fi technobabble? Her eyes narrow and she unconsciously takes a step forward. He stank of fear, his heartbeat was pounding, and he was scanning her face desperately to see if she bought it. That dirty little...

Oh, NOW she was done playing. Rule #2 of responsible vampirism: don't play with your food. Every cell in your body wanted you to act like a cat, to give in to the cheap thrills of dominating and terrorizing others. But it's cruel and dehumanizing, just another way the curse tries to make you a monster. Be better than that. If you're going to take someone down, don't mess around. She locks eyes with him and exerts her hypnotic powers. "That's enough out of you, buddy. Now hold still." Then, as the force of her will tries to overwhelm the mechanic's own, she simply takes a few quick steps forward and punches him straight in the face. Let's see you alien yoga your way out of this, she thinks.

Hey Defiance, if you could specifically say how many PP we get when you buy our opportunities, that'd be great. It's just a bit of a hassle to go back and try to figure out how the Doom Pool has changed relative to how many opportunities we roll. I assume I got 2 and you used the third opportunity to step up one of the dice going in?

Taking Former Mutant, Current Vampire at d4 for +1 PP since she hasn't always been a bloodsucker and has a great deal of sympathy and concern for innocents, so even desperate (and stupid) threats like this one can shake her composure. Taking Enhanced Senses up to 2d8 with Vampiric Rage at the cost of adding a d8 to the Doom Pool if I fail.

Reaction Dice Pool: Solo d6, Former Mutant/Current Vampire d4, Enhanced Senses 2d8, Psych Expert d8, Stress d12

Sense Lies (Reaction): 1d12 11 3#1d8 5 6 3 1d6 4 1d4 1

Total 17, d8 Effect, 1 Opportunity.

Multipower Mind Control and Enhanced Strength, then using Vampiric Rage to step Enhanced Strength back up to d8.

Action Dice Pool: Solo d6, Always Drink Responsibly d8, Mind Control d6, Enhanced Strength d8, Combat Expert d8, Stress d12

No More Games (Attack Action): 1d12 12 3#1d8 3 1 3 3#1d6 2 5 6

Spending 1 PP to take three dice for Total 23, d8 Effect, inflicting Physical Stress. 1 Opportunity. I suspect his goose is cooked, in which case I take +3 XP for stressing out an enemy with my vampiric powers.

Bob frowns as the alien breaks through his mental attack - apparently these guys were smarter than they looked. Well, slightly.

As the alien charges forward, Bob activates his headband again. This time, the alien simply sees Bob dodge to the left, trying to avoid the plasma cutter. In reality, of course, the Uranian exile instead steps to the right. A subtle illusion might work better, where a more direct action had failed. And the gambit pays off! The plasma cutter swings by with room to spare, and the alien watches as the Uranian he hit simply dissolves into vapor, as Bob steps back and away, into the chaos of the crowd.

Team, Agent of Atlas, Illusions, Psych Expert, Stress...No, no! I'm over there! Honest!: 4#1d8 2 2 3 6 1d10 8; 14 with a d8, so I pass that one.

Corsair

So much for subtlety, as the entire district was swarming with boarding pods. The security forces weren't going to get involved unless the casinos and businesses that hired them were threatened, leaving the intruders to carry out their plan of...forcefully prying open the door to the Spire. It seemed a bit too simple to him, but they did have both the element of surprise and numbers on their side. Still, there was no way to know what security measures or traps lay behind that Kree battleship hanger door, which could very easily make things much harder for Corsair and Rachel's own heist.

Well, guess that meant it was time to play hero, and get these cowardly guards to step forward and defend the station. Which meant targeting the one thing they cared about : money. "Fools, do you know what's behind that door? If word gets out we just let them invade the spire, how much do you think they'll dock our pay?! Protect the Spire, and our jobs!" Just to add a bit of urgency, Corsair ended his rallying cry with a shot from his Shi'ar handcannon at nothing in particular. With all the chaos and people running about, it should be hard to tell it was Corsair shouting, but all he needed was for some paranoid casino guards to get it in their heads that their jobs were at stake. And by shooting in an already tense situation, some of the intruders might move to deal with whoever was shooting at them, provoking the guards even further. With enough momentum, that should prod even the more even-headed guards into action.

Of course, that also meant Corsair was about to be in the middle of an all-out brawl between the guards and the intruders while he waiting for some sort of opening to sneak through, but he's been in worse situations with stupider plans.

Action: I want to create a "Motivated Security Guards" scene complication, with the guards basically getting in the way of whatever plan these boarders have. If you're fine with the guards being a Mob that can take actions, then instead it'll be a "Paycheck on the Line" asset to help them out. Either way, I think I'm rolling against the Doom Pool.

The Spoke

Buying your PP, the pool goes to 2/2/0/0/0. I think we'll just make the guards an asset you can use, since the attackers are a mob yourself and it's probably not that cool to watch me fight myself with two hordes of dudes. Anyway, real feast or famine on my rolls, 21 with a d4 effect, two opportunities.

"Hey, who does this guy think he is?" Came a voice from behind Corsair. "He thinks he can just tell us to jump in front of their guns? No way! I say we stay right here!" A heavy hand grabbed his shoulder and he was shoved bodily through the line. "If they clean out the other guys, that means an extra bonus for us!"

Suddenly, there was a bright flash and the pod they'd been cabling to various things all over the structure was firing a hot green beam into the doorway. An energy shield flashed to life, bending and sparking as it tried to keep the beam off the metal of the door. As Corsair got closer, he could hear murmurs of discontent about "other teams" needing to do their drat jobs. Still, the shield looked like it was starting to crumble and before long, it would be cutting into the metal of the door. Even as beefy as it clearly was, it wouldn't hold forever.

As he looked over the situation, his instincts, honed over decades of being a pirate adventurer, explained their positions as clearly as if it was saying Okay, Summers. They dug into to protect the laser. Knowing the bulk of security guards were likely preparing on the other side, their heavies and their biggest guns were all facing in, to lay down a hell of a lot of gunfire the second they punch through the door. On your side, there's a handful of guys packing their sidearms. They have a clear view down the main drag of the Spoke and their stance says they feel like they're in control. You could probably get the drop on them by weaving through some decorative sculptures and ducking behind carts, or you could try a frontal assault and running away... those dug-in guards might not have wanted to follow you, but they'd fight if you brought it to them, right? Or you could try your hand at convincing these guys that what they need is leadership from the legendary king of the pirates to make their heist a reality.

Top Deck

You may not have needed that extra PP, since all four of my dice combined still wouldn't add up to 23. Takes a real beefy shot and goes down like a sack of alien hamburger. Going to use those opportunities to add a D8 to my pool, taking it to 2/2/1/0/0.

The impact was somewhere between dropping a book off a rooftop and riding your bike straight into a brick wall. It took him completely off his perch and sent him flying to the floor below, where he rolled across the floor a couple times like a broken puppet. The thing he'd been working on hung there, half-finished with a mess of cables running out of it. Looked like he had grabbed onto several of them when he'd taken that shellacking and ruined whatever he'd gotten started on before Jubilee got involved. As she looked up at it, the question was now... what to do with it?

The Docks

Going to burn 2d12 from my Doom Pool, ending the action scene! That means everyone gets 2 XP.

Both remaining intruders let out a shriek and tipped over, grabbing at their heads. Berz, though, had the wherewithal to grit his teeth and choke out a few words into the radio on his wrist. "Go to... Plan... B!"

A few moments later, all the stars in the windows disappeared, then reappeared. It was a mystery to puzzle over for a moment, before the power went out. Most of the panicked people fled back out into the hallway, with just some murmuring bystanders left. It was then that a squad of guards entered, helmet lights and hand-aimed flashlights at the ready. "Okay, who wants to tell us what happened here?" Asked the same woman who had let Rachel and Rocket out of the brig.

Couldn't even hazard a guess. Maybe she should try to find someone who would know. A guard, a maintenance worker? She wasn't even sure what those people would look like around here; the tragic consequences of being a tourist. She doesn't mention the oddities of what's happening out of the windows, not in earshot of the fuzz, anyhow. The way that the idiot with the radio was talking, though... they might have more problems than just a little interruption in the view. Some sort of interdiction field? As things continued to escalate, the "sneak-in during the chaos" plan was looking more and more unfeasible. Also, even if he did manage to slip into the Spire, that'd only put him further and further away from Rachel. In that case, perhaps it was time for plan B?

Getting a running start, Corsair leapt and kicked off from a wall and onto a gaudy-looking sculpture, before jumping off of it onto the roof of one of the smaller casinos. From there, it was just a matter of moving quickly from roof to roof before leaping onto one of the cables and making his way to the pod without getting blasted by the boarders. All that would be left was to use his Shi'ar blade to pry open a gap in the pod's armor plating and unload his hand cannon into the exposed machinery. If it worked, he'd be considered a hero who protected Kelestra station, which would make it easier to meet up with Rachel. Perhaps he could even leverage his new reputation to score an audience with whoever was in charge of the Spire? Now that was just wishful thinking.

If it didn't work, he'd be surrounded by enemies with no help in sight. It wouldn't be the first time that happened, but hopefully it wouldn't be the last.

The Docks

"Look, we have our hands full with stuff all over the station," the guard held up a forearm and a projection of the outer ring popped up, with five breach points glowing an angry red just along the outside. She looked over at Rocket with a tired expression on her face. "So, um... thanks for your help. I heard over the radio that the boarders are pulling up stakes and heading for the Spoke, so if you want to come with, we could probably, um... deputize you or something. You'd clearly be a big help."

The station lights flickered a little once more as they heard the tromping of heavy boots going past the door. "We can't legally compel you to come, but this is a chance to brawl on the station without getting locked up for it." The helmeted guards turned back for the door to follow their comrades.

Any stress and complications clear, and you can either head along to the Spoke, stay here on the docks or do some third thing.

Jubilee saw a column of uniformed guards in riot gear on the move, rifles at the ready and moving with the urgency that demonstrated this was not a drill. She traced their path to the massive hatch to the Spoke just a short way up the inside of the ring, its large metal presence dominating the window's skybox. Guards were queueing up for the transition of where "down" was that came with switching from the outer station to its inner portion, and it seemed to be causing a bit of a delay... For a moment, she could swear that the whole thing was swallowed in blackness, but it passed in an instant. It couldn't have been real, could it...?

The Spoke

Corsair swung above the crowd, lasers criss-crossing as he passed by a pod, striking it with his blade before effortlessly switching hands to unload fire into the breach. It sputtered and made an angry hiss as black smoke rolled from it. The pirate captain heard a cheer go up as Kelestra security stormed ahead, rolling into the boarders' perimeter like a wave into a rocky tide. They didn't overrun them, but it was enough to let Christopher Summers escape with his skin. Above him, the beam that had been boring into the shields shifted into a warmer shade of green and swelled slightly. The serpentine boarder nearest Corsair was suddenly quite distracted by its new behavior, and made a disapproving noise in the back of his throat.

Jubilee
PP: 3 | XP: 6

Man, she'd either picked the perfect time to show up on Kelestra or the worst time. Massive organized invasions, fistfights in the rafters, mysterious waves of darkness... She casually slips into the queue of guards and taps the one in front of her on the shoulder, waving in the general direction of the place that alien mechanic had been messing with.

"Uh, hey, I know you're busy but one of those boarders was up there messing with that support. I was kinda worried he was going to rip the roof off or something, so I went up there and cleaned his clock. No clue what he was doing, but I don't think he finished. Lots of wires and stuff exposed though, so you should probably let somebody official know."

She says nothing about tagging along, but she also doesn't exit the line. Refuge in audacity and all that. If all these guards were going to the Spoke, then that was where the REALLY interesting stuff was happening, and Jubilee didn't intend to miss it.

And of course, if they did object, she'd just find an isolated one around here and "liberate" him of his gear so she'd blend in. So when you really thought about it, barging into the line and acting like she belonged was a courtesy to them.

"The name's Prestige. And, trust me buddy, I know all about how much of a mess Earth is. That's why I cruised out of there as soon as I could." Rachel thinks about the guard's offer for a moment. She has no intent of actually working for the fuzz, but it was a real easy way to get eyes on the prize and her powers were quite handy at working on the down-low. Turning to the guard, she says, "Sure, I'm in. How about you three?"

Another telepath? And one who has heard of Earth...she sounds as though she might even be from there, too! It seems that Bob wasn't getting away from Earth problems anytime soon...

Shaken from his thoughts by the question, Bob nods a bit absentmindedly. "Oh, yes. Yes, of course."
