this again? I saw a presentation of Tetrageddon at Fantastic Arcade and found it compelling. i hadn't even played the dang thing before making Hypnospace and frankly I regret my tweet complimenting the work now.

most of what Nathalie lists are things that were common to operating systems of the day or the early web experience. the other things can be traced to the 2014 prequel I made called Hypnospace Enforcer, which predates me even knowing about Tetrageddon and involves similar themes.

also some of the listed things aren't even IN Hypnospace so I kind of doubt Nathalie actually played it. (a secret police? lol)

either way, mine is a relatively dry period piece mystery game and Tetrageddon is not that. it's so frustrating to spend 5 years of one's life on a project only to have someone invent a narrative that you swiped it from them. in actuality I swiped it from a year of dot com history research and my own formative years using computers. jeeeeeeez.

Hypnospace is rad and I will never, ever, for the rest of my days, be able to get the chorus of Chowder Man out of my head thanks to it.

You can take a reductionist approach and say that at the end of the day, all works of art are ultimately derivative of something that already exists. People are inspired by, and consequently inspire, others to do things in a similar style if that resonates with their artistic sensibilities. Even if you accept the argument that Hypnospace and Tetrageddon are cut from the same cloth (I'd argue that Hypnospace is more 1996-2000 internet while Tetrageddon appears to be more post-2000, to say nothing of the actual type of games that they really are as you pointed out with mystery vs. not mystery), your styles and voices ultimately create two unique products that can exist in the same space.

Thanks for making a cool and unique game that I always recommend to folks looking for something nostalgic and yet unique.

I'd like the comfort food of a Fire Emblem or Pokemon game, but most of the games in those series suck. I'd want lots of QOL in a FE or something different mechanically in a Pokemon game. A bootleg Pokemon Tactics would be cool. The real Pokemon tactics, whatever it was called, was about 60% baked. Any recommendations come to mind?

I have absolutely no idea how it actually plays, but would you believe a bunch of hackers on Fire Emblem Universe made a Gen 1 Pokemon tactics hack inside the Fire Emblem Sacred Stones engine? And it's not just a visual reskin of the game either, it features full imports of pokemon mechanics into FE. Check out the screenshots on the FEU page: https://feuniverse.us/t/pokemblem-complete-v1-07

-Level-up moves

-Many quality of life features
-Combat is challenging but fair
-Pokémon revived at pokécenters
-Dialogue/story is sparse and usually optional
-Freely explore Kanto
-Fast-travel via route signs
-Exp is capped to the levels of gym leaders

It's called Gleaner Heights. It starts slow and if you stick with it, a cool creepy plot happens. I didn't stick with it. I literally did not know how to spend my time other than plant a plant and talk to people who don't give you any trailheads. I dunno. Maybe you could grab somebody's save file to skip the intro parts.

So I love the gently caress out of classic Resident Evil/survival horror games. Are there any good 'rom'hacks for Resident Evil 1/2/3/CV? Or I suppose fan translations or whatever of similar games from Japan my American rear end missed out on?

Bonus points if they take place in a mansion or equivalent. Spooky cabins and big sprawling mansions are fun.

It didn't have all the missions.

The Japanese version has 50something missions with branching paths; the localized campaign has 36, all linear, with the voice acting removed (edit: and edited/removed cutscenes). I'm pretty sure they basically just pulled most of out the story so they didn't have to translate it.

I decided to work on adding a database solution to the Super Metroid Maker. I think I did it! You can save entire game/world maps, edit/save/delete individual rooms, and when it's time to create the .IPS file the game maker will autobuild whatever you didn't. Now that data is stored centrally/remotely the next steps are to figure out a way to make a web interface for editing world and room maps. The data is all relationally stored in its raw, editable form and really just the most interesting stuff to edit (graphics/rooms/enemies/items) - any suggestions on how to set this up are welcome! I have a domain name and hosting w/ MySQL but have no clue how to start doing web visualization and table updates.

I added some fun stuff finally! Built a cursor and am now doing edits that aren't button macros.

Editing the room data:

Launching and playing the ROM:

...also gotta resume getting bosses functional. So much stuff to tackle!

Thanks! Please tell me if I should stop strafing this thread with updates. I don't think this is interesting enough to warrant its own thread but still want to show the SA crowd.

Lately there's been lots of low-hanging fruit so adding fun stuff has been easier. Added grapple/bombable/speed booster/x-ray blocks, point-and-click enemies/items, and a boatload of keyboard and mouse macros. Making a toggled larger cursor for carving out rooms was a huge relief.
