Oh, well, that's all water under the bridge, as I always say. Water under the bridge!

We all have 'em. They're those weird singular moments that catch your attention in films you dig, that make you love them more. A particular score cue, a singular shot, an actor's glance.

When John McClane hugs Al Powell at the end of Die Hard, and his laughter blows out the mic? That's one of mine.

List 'em here, jerks.

I absolutely adore Home Alone's heroic, totally bizarre close-up on some random kid that's in the movie for all of 15 seconds. Jimmy, stop that boy!

I remember seeing this in theaters and mentally convincing myself I had completely misheard it.

Edit: all of these have been amazing. I completely forgot about BIRD TRANSITION, and that Home Alone clip was like a nostalgia bomb.

This is from the WTF moments thread, and it got me to watch the film, and by my lights it belongs here:

Strom Cuzewon posted:

The Limehouse Golem is kind of a weirdly shot Victorian murder thriller, that takes an incredibly bizarre detour in the middle.

Bill Nighy is a Victorian detective trying to track down a serial killer, and the only clue he has is what appears to be the Golem's diary, scrawled in the margins of a library book. He tracks down everybody who was in the library on a certain day, and gets them to write down sections of the diary as he dictates them, to compare their handwriting.

This is mostly an excuse for some very stylised flashbacks, where we see the suspect, as the Golem, enacting grisly murders, with all sorts of dramatic lighting and distortion effects, and the narration shifts to the suspect dubbed over with a strange demonic voice. It's obnoxiously modern and flashy for what's supposed to be a period piece, but it's creepy enough.

It's all fairly normal, until Billy Nighy goes to interrogate Karl Marx, and we're treated to an extended sequence of Karl Marx decapitating a prostitute before Bill Nighy snaps "well this is absurd" and Karl Marx is never seen or mentioned again.

It's a very odd film.

It also has George Gissing treated similarly. I'm gonna read New Grub Street at some point so I can fully get that one, too.

That's probably because that moment was "real", that was the first time they'd met on set and was a genuine reaction.

For me, first thing that comes to mind is the ending of Planes Trains and Automobiles, that loving freeze frame at the end is so... Jarring. Melancholy. Weird? Also the soundtrack which consists of soundbites of Steve Martin while he's running around onscreen. What the he

I can't find it here, but there's a bit in Blade Runner, after Deckhard has got the poo poo kicked out of him yet again, where he's in his apartment and takes a sip of vodka. It's backlit and you see a tiny bit of blood backwash into the glass. It's both beautiful and a nice reminder of what he's just been through. A detail most directors wouldn't have bothered with.

EMO AS FUCK
So in the movie Seven there's a scene where Morgan Freeman is discussing the case with Brad Pitt in Pitts apartment. Earlier that evening they had dinner and wine. So they're discussing the case and Pitt goes to Freeman some more wine but instead of pouring the wine into wine glasses he pours them into a regular tall glass. When he hands the glass the glass to Freeman he gives the glass a funny look and continues with the conversation. Its a funny little moment that adds something to both the characters.

I like this one too. It's such an unexpectedly funny little moment in such an overwhelmingly dark film.

And the Ghostbusters proton pack gag is great because it's funny on the page, but it's the actual performances that put it into a completely different level. My favorite part out of the whole thing is actually Ray's obliviousness to what's happening behind him.

In Tremors , when Val is cleaning Rhonda's wounds after a Graboid attack, Earl is sitting there, giving Val the epitome of a poo poo eating grin. It's such a great look and one of my favorite moments of that movie.

There's that moment in Muppet Christmas Carol where Sam the Eagle describes something with, "It's the American way!" and Gonzo/Dickens sneaks over to whisper in his ear so that he corrects himself and says "I mean, it's the BRITISH way!"

Then the camera just lingers on him for an uncomfortable amount of time before going to the next scene.

I also love the bit in the catacombs in crusade when they pass a mural of the arc of the covenant. Elsa asks what that is, Indy doesn't even look at it and says it's the arc of the covenant. Elsa asks if he's sure, and Indy just deadpans "pretty sure"
