I remember going back and looking at lottery picks from 95-2003 and the bust ratio of HS players was basically the same as of college players and also you were more likely to get a HOF caliber player from a HS guy.

As the G-League continues establishing itself as a pathway to the NBA, hopefully there will less stigma about being a G-leaguer and both teams and players will be happier to send their first round draft picks down for a few months, or even a whole season.

If you could pick a high schooler 20th overall and just have him play in the G-League for the first season, working with coaches who have an interest in improving your skills and getting 34 minutes a game then it's probably better for his development than either playing in college or being the 9th man on an NBA team getting 8 minutes here and there.

Draft 'gurus' always have to make someone rise up and challenge the undisputed no. 1 pick simply because they need something to write about that gets clicks otherwise they don't have a job. See: Simmons v Ingram, Fultz v Josh Jackson/Ball, Wiggins v Jabari etc. What matters is what teams think.

Yeah he's a first rounder, seems like he's mostly pegged in the late teens or 20s but I like him more than that. He makes some dumb decisions but he's big, fast, and a really good pull up shooter. Big issue with him is that he might have to be a bench player because I don't think he's really a point guard and he's not long enough to guard most 2s

Sounds like tall Lou Williams

For Knicks fans, everything is both "our players are awesome and have so much potential and everyone wants to come to New York and we are going to dominate free agency and watch out league here come the Knicks!!!!" and "omg our players suck rear end and Dolan is an idiot and our coach is horrible and why would anyone come here we are doomed why am I a Knicks fan???" at the same time. There's no way the Lakers keep that pick. Not only does developing a rookie not match their timeline with Lebron, but now it is up to #4 overall the increased rookie scale salary makes a bigger dent in their cap room for free agents.

I think the math I saw says that they can still afford to max out anyone except KD and still keep the #4 pick

The cap hasn't been set yet, if it goes down from the estimated $108m then they could have to trade it to get a max.

Also the fact the pick carries a higher salary actually makes it easier to trade for an impact player as matching the salaries is easier.

If they can't get AD I think I'd be trying to trade down if I were the Lakers. If they primarily just want a shooter who is otherwise stay out of the way they'd probably be better off getting down to the Cam Johnson/Ty Jerome range. I don't think there are a ton of teams who want to move up when the draft is such a mess after the top 2 (or top 3 depending on how you tell about RJ). Maybe someone is in love with Reddish though, I dunno.

I think if the Lakers can't get AD they go after Beal or Conley in a trade. I would be shocked if they keep it at four and that player is still on the team come the start of the season.

The want to get two stars with LeBron if they have any sense, and the only way to do that is one via FA and one via trade.

The Dunc'd On twins did a 25 minute breakdown on RJ Barrett. In summary:

Positives: good passing vision, above average (but not explosive) athlete, good pick and roll handler (when going left)... uhh... very confident?

Negatives: terrible going right, bad jump shot mechanics, poor free throw shooter, limited post moves, bad floater game, low effort on defence, below average length limits defensive upside

They made the point of how many 3s are there in the league who both can't shoot and aren't great athletes and defenders? Basically no NBA rotation 3 doesn't have at least one of those skills. Their comparison was less athletic DeMar DeRozan, which doesn't sound very promising.

i think he’ll end up being rudy gay but i also don’t think it’s ridiculous to think he could end up being more than that

They said there is a way you could see him being an all-star, (and they praised his work ethic, pointing out that even though his jump shot is still bad it is actually much improved from when he was 16 playing in the FIBA U-19 world cup) but it requires improvement in so many different areas of his game it just doesn't seem that likely.

e: fwiw, the Dunc'd on guys think Zion is the best prospect since AD, though aren't 100% sold on him being an MVP level player unless he improves his jump shot and are sceptical he'll be an elite (not just pretty good) defender. They also love Morant and see him as a possible multiple all-star.

Dunc'd on did a breakdown on Garland. Their summary was less athletic Dame Lillard (as a prospect, not as he is now).

Positives: Jump shot looks very good, showed good catch and shoot ability, okay passer but has promising vision, good basketball IQ and instincts on offense, 'his handle is creative but needs to get tighter'

Negatives: needs to improve finishing at the rim, when driving only drew 'cheap' fouls he won't always get in the NBA, not a rebounder, never going to be a plus defender (though not abysmal like Trae Young), didn't consistently push the ball in transition or always make the right read in fast break opportunities.

Overall: Not sure if All-NBA upside is there due to average athleticism, but unless his shooting just doesn't translate at all he has a high floor as a solid offensive guard and if his point guard instincts continue to develop (he was an off-guard for much of his high school play) he has all-star potential. All of this obviously tempered though by small sample size and the risks therein.

They both had him ahead of RJ Barrett, Nate by a lot and Danny by a smaller amount (Nate Duncan really dislikes RJ Barrett, lol). As a cross-draft comparison, both would have taken Trae as a prospect from last year ahead of him (mostly due to Trae's outstanding passing and transition game, but also due to sample size concerns).

Dunc'd on dudes did a breakdown of Culver and said his shot is seriously inconsistent (borderline broken) and he doesn't have the speed to play the 2 but also probably won't have the strength to guard NBA 3s. Described him as 80% of RJ Barrett but one year older, which is not good as they don't see Barrett having all-star potential. Ranked him well below Mikal Bridges as a prospect from last year as a comparison.

I don't do any research myself and don't watch college hoops. All the draft specialist media guys need to maintain a modicum of hype around the draft regardless of quality, otherwise they don't get clicks and follows. So it's depressing to hear opinions from informed NBA focused analysts who have no stake in the game generally trash even top lottery prospects this year.

I think they have done more in depth stuff this year (and maybe last year? I can't remember). They mention using synergy to watch every possession of certain types of plays for guys and things like that. I'm sure haven't watched as much as Givony or Amick though.

To expand on their Culver take a bit more (which I have no idea as to how accurate it is!) apparently his jump shot is much smoother and more consistent off-the dribble than on catch and shoots, which is both unusual and weird. Sometimes his release is on the way down and sometimes on the way up which is very problematic, it's not always wrong the same way. They also discounted his defense somewhat due to the scheme he played in at college not really being comparable to how he would have to defend in the NBA (I have no idea how true that is) and also his stats to an extent as apparently he performed way better in non-conference games against sub .500 opposition than against stronger teams. RJ Barrett by comparison played a much tougher schedule at Duke.

I have sometimes wondered how successful an NBA team would be drafting one year college players purely based on high school and USA U-19 tape and largely ignoring anything from college. On the one hand it's more tape to watch (always good) and against more athletic and stronger competition, but on the other hand it seems a good number of players just get hosed over being dumped into an antiquated scheme with a coaching staff that aren't particularly invested in improving their skills or playing to their strengths that does them no favours come draft time.

Obviously for multi year guys the college tape is more valuable, but for those 5 star HS recruits it seems more often than not they are who they are and five months on campus doesn't really matter a great deal.

As your designated Dunc'd on draft take correspondent (at least it stimulates some discussion of prospects), I can report that they are quite positive on DeAndre Hunter.

Pros: Very sound three point shot though very 'mechanical', two point jumper is more fluid and can take off the dribble with success, some nice mid-post moves, not a creative passer but generally makes good decisions and reads, very unlikely to ever be a 20ppg scorer but not a guy you can just leave open --- quote: "not a spectacular defender, more solid, but as solid as solid gets", very quick feet and good lateral movement, stays focused whether on-ball or off-ball, guarding 2-4 at NBA shouldn't be a problem with 1-5 upside, good team rebounder and almost always boxes out on missed shots

Cons: adequate finisher (good stats, but a lot of 'straight up and down' finishes with little agility that could struggle against NBA-level rim protection), handle is functional but probably never going to be a ball handler, very much a catch and shoot guy only from three currently --- doesn't use his physicality enough on defence and really 'get into guys' on-ball, more of a reactor than anticipator defending off-ball

They largely agree with the high floor, low ceiling consensus on Hunter. They don't see him as an elite Kawhi/Marcus Smart level defender, mainly because they don't see the off-ball anticipatory instincts those guys have that causes havoc for offences (though he could develop them), but they feel he fits very easily into the switchy 3&D wing archetype the NBA is craving right now. They like his offensive game for what it is, not a volume shooter or a guy you'd run your offense through but someone you can't leave open because he can hit a catch and shoot three whilst also having enough hops to take a dribble or two into a comfortable mid-ranger if you close out too aggressively. Their expected outcome for him is 2nd best defender and 4th best offensive player on a good playoff team, a couple of comps were Al-Faroq Aminu and (offensively) Serge Ibaka.

They haven't done rankings yet, but I got the feeling they liked Hunter more than RJ Barrett and Culver.
