I suffer my first defeat as the Germans force an Para battalion back.

Then they attack the port again.

The British spread their pain again – night bombing is not good for accuracy.

The US take out the U-boat factories and fuel production.

First I collect my panzer Division.

Then I smash through their lines – if they are routing, their units are in a bad way!

I use the 29th to open a wider hole, then put more units into it.

A much larger attack is needed to overcome their defences here.

Taking Naples is going to be costly. But they are cut off, so it should be doable.

I suddenly remember I've not addressed one of histories greatest issues – and immediately fire Mark Clark.

I've run my armoured units hard, and they need a bit of time to replace losses. I don't have any troops to bring in atm, so hopefully that'll leave more port space for supplies. I need Naples!

God help me. I think this may be the most interesting site to land that still gives me enough ports to support my troops.

No attacks this turn.

My advances have forced them to give up some more ground.

The weather turns on us again.

I have to bring 120,000 men to Naples, and even then, I only manage to take their outer defences.

The 94th hold out against a second attack, but their fortifications are gone now.

I then turn my attention north.

The follow up attack routs the enemy.

Time to make this line untenable as well.

British units do good work.

The airborne units get in on the act.

My tanks still need rest.

These Germans are not putting up much of a fight!

Once again they give ground to stop a breakthrough.

Most bombers stay at home or miss their targets in the terrible weather.

The Germans retreat from Naples.

We take the city and march further south.

Now to ready ourselves for the next battle.

The tanks aren't fully replenished yet, but I sense an opportunity!

This was a tougher fight, but we keep on pushing.

I push on their weaker flanks to avoid having to attack in the mountains.

We keep grinding up!

Seem they don't want me advancing.

Poor weather means little bombing.

One more port to clean out.

Time to keep pushing north.

They can't be allowed to dig in!

I'm making good time all told though.

We inflict heavy losses on the Germans here.

I advance into the gaps.

And keep hitting the weakened units.

And there are a lot of them.

Lets see if this causes another general withdrawl.

Then again, I'm not sure how long the Germans can keep taking these losses.

Once again, the Germans opt to retreat over fight.

The normal January story.

I start moving a couple of tank divisions cross country.

We continue to target the weak points in their line.

A general advance continues.

I'm still looking for an encirclement.

There is still some steel in them though.

I bring in two fresh divisions – including the Poles, and try again. To no avail.

We'll just have to do this the old fashioned way.

These guys are dug in well.

Work on another fortified position begins.

Next week I guess.

More of a costly week it seems. But we're still moving and well ahead of schedule.

The germans mass their troops and rout the lone Italian motorized Division.

Time to shift those losses the other way.

I have planes destroying the rail lines south of the invasion zone – the plan is to destroy their ability to bring in support units.

The RAF were on target for once.

Salerno is mine. Most of these units will now move to eliminate the remaining divisions holding ports. Mainly as it doesn't look good in the papers.

Time to get moving.

Holes are made.

I exploit a gap with a tank unit, then push to the north.

The flat terrain makes for good advances.

The Herman Goring Panzer Division proves my bane at the moment.

Even they cannot hold forever.

Fresh units move up and punch forwards some more.

This is to stop them digging in.

This just enlarges the gap.

Lets keep these guys pinned in place as well.

Another great week for the forces of the Croctopods.

Once again, the Germans pull back slightly.

Clouds cover most targets, so once more, damage is limited.

So many units need cleaning up, and the southern two are well dug in divisions.

Back to the grind.

We maul the plane tanks.

The hole gets bigger.

Their front line has crumbled across a forty kilometre stretch.

I push deeper.

And deeper.

This is not the eastern front however, and my tanks cannot speed through the gaps as I would like them to.

There is a break in the weather and the RAF get to it.

The Americans do some good work on their Targets as well.

Clean up. It needs to happen.

I try something new today – a parachute drop behind enemy lines! One battalion scatters so badly it lands in the sea! The others make it though, and a re ready to hole any enemy retreats.

Now to see if I can perform an encirclement.

This is the key hex to clear.

Lets hit these guys as well.

Cutting this rail line effectively splits the eastern and western forces. Marching over those mountains is slow. They can rail around, but it will take longer. This makes my para drop a bit risky! They have now been cut off for a week in game turns! Lets hope the Germans can't move on them that quickly.

8th Air force continue to be a bit more targetted.

First I move to trap a division and a battalion. I got something from this at least. Then I push north.

The SS division has to go as well.

Let see if I can get to that other Brigade as well.

Pack 'em in tight.

I can't shift that two division strong point, so let see what we can do here!

Threaten their flank lads!

Surrender Dammit! This was my fault, I didn't want to spend the extra move surrounding the city.

There we go, although it seems most of the unit is now pretending to be Italian farmers.

Now to eliminate this pocket.

Force them back.

Then clean them up.

Then back to the main show.

I shatter their line again.

Then follow north.

A large hole opens.

Right, lets see what I can do with the tanks.

The Poles reach Florence. Now the Germans have a massive problem – I can turn two directions to but them off!

No encirclements on this flank, but I can still take my second port.

Poor weather, the RAF get out there, but the 8th Airforce stay home this week.

We get moving.

This is going to be tough to open up any large holes this week, the infantry need to move up.

Time to go for the coast.

I start to man my flanks with brigades, but they are facing regiments, so I can hold.

As is required, I end up one hex short.

The Poles cannot advance, so I have to settle on bringing up support.

The Germans mass a force and push 7th armoured back – I'm not unhappy, as none on these units are moving north to attack the 82nd.

That attack cost them eight Panthers and fourteen Stugs.

Now I have some options.

Another good weeks weather.

We smash several factories.

The Fallschirmjager are dug in well.

But we shift them.

Time for some clean up.

The last group will need to wait.

For some reason, all my CV's have dropped like a stone. Everyone has supplies and is at at least 75% TOE, but the will to fight is not there. Do they owe the entire 82nd money?

I drop my last Para unit, but they scatter AWAY from the drop zone, if they had dropped in or south, they would have reconnected.

Here is my rail network, red is damaged, orange is repaired this turn. As you can see, I'm one(!) hex from connecting Rome, and through it my front line, to Naples by sea. So let's hope my guys sort out their poo poo soon.

More mud, I definitely need to wait for this to clear before launching Operation Moisturise.

I dial in my air strikes.

The weather improves, and my strikes go in.

The 8th do good damage to their more select targets.

The advance begins, but the lead units are not as well supplied as I would like. Bloody mountains!

This fortified zone is actually useful. It allows the retreating troops to hold.

My tanks cut the rail line – this at least prevents a mass breakout!

I push up on the west coast.

I need to keep these guys pinned down so they can't move to stop the “breakthrough”

We're about to hit mountains on this flank though.

I take this fortified zone out before it can be garrisoned. That would have been painful!

I displace a HQ unit, which is always nice, then advance into open ground. They seem to be recombining their divisions.

For once an airborne drop lands where I want it – securing the rail line and giving the Germans one hex to retreat through – the swamps of Comacchio!

The guys down south hop across a ferry to Messina, then boat up to where my rail lines will work. It's almost like I planned it. There are no working ports north of here, so this is the best I can do.
