I'm aware of the lack of participation in the 2018 gaybies, and I have a proposal for a fix. So much happened over the thousand year period of 2018, and the cartoons were been so bad, that I think thread participants have been overwhelmed by the scale of it all. It's difficult to cast our minds back over the millenia of 2018 and think of specific examples for each category. I personally start to bleed from the nose when I try to delve through the past thread to find cartoons to nominate.

To address this issue for future iterations of the thread, I propose a Gay Abortion Continuity System, or GAYBORTCONSYST for short. Here's how it would work:

1. Besesoth includes a list of the coming year's Gaybie categories in the OP. I know the categories can shift, this doesn't have to be a complete list. We may want to include periodic refresher posting of the category list throughout the year.

2. When a comic is posted that appears likely to be a contender for a given category, posters nominate it by quoting the comic and also posting some unique Gaybie Signifier (GAY SIG for short) and their nomination categories. The Signifier isn't some complex hash, just a specific phrase or word that is used exclusively for this purpose, something that wouldn't ever be posted for other purposes. "GAYBIE DICKBUTT", for instance, or "a good Lester". This phrase will allow the Gaybie administrators to run a thread search and easily pick out an initial set of nominees.

The largest problem I foresee is that this would make it easy for people to accidentally nominate more than one cartoon per category, and there will need to be some winnowing in the initial contest setup (although too many nominations does not seem to be a problem). But this approach would ensure we don't forget any January cartoons eight million years later in December.

What do y'all think? Feel free to knock this down or modify it, I just want to be sure we have a healthy, flourishing gaybocracy.

This should work fine. The almost complete lack of children in cages in the present Gaybies nominees seems like its entirely down to personal memories, and not no horrific cartoons coming out around that time.

I'd like it if the repository thread was ran year round, too. If something gets gaybie tagged under that system, throw it in there. Coming up with a nomination list would be a lot easier if all the :geno: ones are filtered out to begin with.

I agree though, just tagging stuff as they come in would help a lot. Even with that macro that removes posts that don't have an outside resource in them, sifting through nearly a thousand pages makes me balk.

I don't think we need to assign them to categories when we say "holy poo poo this cartoon is bad," we can look at the flagged cartoons at the end of the year and create categories based on what we end up having a lot of.

Yeah, that makes for more work for whoever runs the Gay Abortions, but it's work that can be done completely by one or a couple people.

But that would just mean that that person is dictating the entrants for the categories. That'll work for things like the racism, sexism, transphobia, islamaphobia and so on, but for other categories that gets a lot harder to tell what it was intended to fall under.

And it would make it so the options for overall worst come down almost entirely to the contest runners feelings, since they'd subjectively judge the worst from the given pool.

I was thinking that the contest runner would create the categories after seeing the submitted cartoons, while the audience would still assign cartoons to categories and vote on a winner in each category.

In my experience if there is an identifiable group of people both in-groups and out-groups will make (usually dumb) jokes about tardiness being a cultural thing, even when it's like literally [Dominican/Trinidadian/Mexican/Italian/French] people talking about their immediate family members. I don't really get it, but as long as it's being done within as opposed to without I also can't get mad.

It reminds me of when I worked in a bookstore in college and realized that some lovely publisher had a cottage industry of doing like "500 Jokes for Jayhawks Fans" that was just a word-replaced copy of "500 Jokes for Sooners Fans", "500 Jokes for Bears Fans", "500 Jokes for Red Sox Fans", etc. which were just "WHY ARE [RIVAL TEAM'S] FANS SO STUPID?" or "WHAT DID THE [HOME TEAM]'S COACH SAY TO HIS WIFE, BECAUSE HE'S SO SMART AND HANDSOME"

They also had a line of books that were "How To Identify a _________ Mother/Father" that were basically just jokes about every doting sitcom mother and every gruff handyman father, but with a couple of words changed so that it was your "typical Jewish mother" or "typical Catholic father" or "Italian mother" or "Mexican father". The extent of the difference between books were always just "she makes the best [tamales/latkes/ghoulash], but can't figure out the dang VCR!"

The above is a direct link to the last updated comprehensive cartoonist index, if you'd like to include it in the OP, Besesoth. I think it's a worthwhile resource to keep hanging around, even if it's not updated we can point new users to it.

Upon review, and given layoffs of the past year, it might be worth reviewing that list to identify cartoonists who are still around that are worth adding to the standard posting rotation.
