there may be people who
find a blender sexy - I
would do well with a more
humanoid model, myself
Tvar - Tube Site

The group approached the Tube and the goblin looked it over. “Can you carry it?” He asked the large one in a high pitched croak. As the muscular mutant tried to find a hold to lift it the goblin began to look around and the shambling mutants(that looked a mix of human and goblin) followed. Before long he found Tvar’s goggled. He realized too late the eyes that watched from within.

Tvar rose in a burst of sand, a sharp rock cutting the goblin’s throat. The shamblers were dispatched with deft smashes to their heads. The big one was the only one left with time to react before Tvar reached him. The big one wet his ragged pants and began to cry.

“Bug! No eggs! Noooo” he wailed.

Holy surprise round.

Wren - West Dunes ???

They agree, provided Wren guide them to the site as well. Then they will take him with them until they reach “Civilization”. One of the Orcs takes hold of the skull and holds it aloft. It catches flame and the orc tosses it down the dune.

Alder Wrinright - Fort Aleph, Yamu-Kem

There was some faint activity towards the Ziggurat as Alder left for the military fortress of Aleph. It was known in its day to hold the most elite legion of its Empire and had the distinction of never having fallen.

When Alder entered, however, it seemed full of corpses. Commoners, workers, farmers, the lower classes generally judging by what remained of their clothes. The odd dead soldier in still-brilliant bronze-plated armor every now and then among the other corpses told a story of the masses’ desperation turning them against their former protectors.

When he reached the pumps it finally looked like someone had bothered to clear the bodies in places other than a direct path to the pumps themselves. Alder tried every pump for some time, but they were all dry.

They drank it all before the end.

Mikhail - Bug Country

Some distance away you see a burst of sand as several multi-limbed chitinous creatures burrow into the ground directly in your intended path.

Bad % roll, good Quality roll. You know they are there.

Zhin - Zhin’s Paradise

The seed is planted perfectly. Expertly. Tenderly. In fact the seed has every single thing it needs to grow into a big strong tree save one.

Water.

It’s good but Zhin begins to notice it’s awfully dry here.

Aeson Graham - Ruined Road Westward

As time seems to slow down Aeson realises his perception has been sped up to match his new speed. He approaches the cart to pick up the injured...woman(!) as an apparent mage casts a triad of magic missles at the attackers from within the cart. Aeson realizes that the injured woman is carrying a baby and aside from the mage the cart is full of small to teenage children. The attacking half dozen(now merely three) do not appear human as the cart-folk do. They have odd, savage proportions and obvious traces of goblin heritage along with some mutated strain of humanity.

Going to give you an additional round of speed since you spent two mana on it and you have a decision point before you run.

Caranos - In the Shadow of a Tower - The Gate

You gather that these people are serfs and slaves to the wizards of the tower. Wizards in plural, those with aptitude often come seeking admittance. Usually the price is a sliver or chip of the World-Stone. None in living memory have brought an entire chunk. For them to ask a Shard sounds an impossible task. The people chuckle before telling you there are only seven known shards, all belonging to shardlords of various races. None have any desire to travel, they have safety and reliable food and water here.

Worth noting the order of size and therefore power go as such: Sliver, Chip, Chunk, Shard.

Voices in Stone - With Halfling Caravan.

You strain, for finding water is a difficult task even for the experienced in this land. You eventually find a large supply about an hour’s walk away. The Halflings seem to understand you do possess some power, even if you are strange and do not speak as plainly as you think. A small group of them set out with you on camelback and form a circle around the spot you believe to be the best place to tap the deep source. A moment of concentration and they congratulate you.

“Excellent find! You may be strange but you get results.” Before nightfall the rest of the caravan has arrived and begun to set up around the location.

They will let you hang out with them.

The Overseer - Banterwort

You are spotted by a guard on the ramshackle wall surrounding the town and met with a handful of militiamen by the time you reach it.

“Greetings weary traveler! Welcome to Banterwort! Are you alone? Survivor? Lost? Seeking refuge?” They seem to have a pre-arranged greeting but stop when they notice your appearance.

“...are you a golem? Never seen a golem walk in before.”

You’ll have to handle this social encounter before you are allowed to enter the town without incident.

Korrin Smith - Edge of Ruined City

By dawn you manage to follow the trail to the edge of a mostly-buried cityscape. It may have been great before the Fall but the Wastes have laid a claim to it. The trail is easier to follow, however, and you come to find the source of the some of the strange tracks: An ostrich-like bird with a saddle on it. Three of them, in fact. They do not notice your approach. Their riders are not with them, likely exploring the ruins for some purpose.

You found the crap out of them.

Wren - West Dunes ???

Mana: 12, Divinity: 0

Wren watches the skull for a moment before asking, "So, do skulls spontaneously catch fire here or was that something else?"

Eventually he turns back the way he came and sighs. Ah well, at least there was nothing at stake but time. "This way, follow me. I'll tell you the tale as we walk."

It was not a long one. "So how much do you know about wizards? Not to be trusted, I say. Anyway, the details are fuzzy, but the short story is a wizard kidnapped me and held me prisoner in a tube. I think his tower must have exploded because I woke up in the wreckage of the tube in the middle of that dust cloud. Maybe something worth something to you." He glances back, that old glint of avarice in his eyes.

"We'll see I suppose."

Wren will take them to the tube-site, no tricks planned for now. Charming +2 to hopefully endear myself to them and avoid backstabbery. Then on to Civilization where money hopefully means something.

The Overseer (or O, pronounced 'oh') - ??

'By Clanthor's teeth' Thought O, I am the alien here. Likely he looked like some wandering monster or construct to these people. The techno-cybern implants on his body and his palor did not look like the tanned skins of these people. Nor his eyes. Some truth but no lies he decided.

"Greetings, you can call me: 'O'. I will confess I am most of those things you named. A lone lost survivor seeking refuge. I remember being a prisoner of some magic caster of some sort in the wastes, somewhere. I wasn't always conscious so I know not how long or what was or was not done to me. I am skilled in mending and building things, perhaps that is one of the reasons I was imprisoned." The Overseer would need to get a cloak or some obscuring clothing that waste-landers and these communities alike would not see as outlandish. His people had at some point dealt with other races and even xenophobic communities. Though O was at a slight disadvantage there had to be some interactions that were meaningful.

They could be asking if he was alone and without people to enslave him, but he had to take the risk. Acting like some kind of conquering emperor or fear based figure could get him killed. How many of the Starborn had made that mistake on some Neo-barb planet where they thought their trinkets and magitech-cybernetics would give them godhood. The Overseer shook his head mentally. He spoke again to the group of guards. "I'm not sure which town this is or what these lands are called in this area. Where am I? Also, is this town somewhere I can find work or trade? I don't intend to be a burden."

Doing:
  • Using.Universal Lore-master [+4] and Sole Survivor [+2] to deal with the guardians of the town, tell his story with as much truth as he is comfortable with until he knows more. There is a general way to interact with new species and a bit of self-preservation/possibly luck here. They could be asking to enslave him if he has no people we shall see!

EXCEED CHARGE
Alder Wrinright - Stone Ruins, Yamu-Kem

The carnage at the fort was a surprise and a disappointment. For even the wells dif as deeply as those at such a major fort as this to have run dry meant the situation was grave indeed. In fact, Alder realized, it probably meant his dreams of power and empire were entirely impossible. If water was so scarce as to make large scale settlements impossible than until that was changed he would never truly be able to forge an empire.

He could try and investigate the activity at the ziggurat, but Alder understood all too well that while the Scepter is powerful it was limited. When it came right down to it he unless he really wasn't capable of handling any sort of physical threat that couldn't be subverted by the Scepter. That meant what he needed most of all right now was muscle. He had the means to secure it if and only if he could find any.

He had been, apparently, the world's greatest logistician. Surely, if he reasoned things through he should be able to figure out where he could find those he could make into his servants. He would need to use the worst of the worst case assumptions, adjust for time and endemic long term drought conditions. Compare it with his knowledge of resource locations, construction and weather patterns, try and factor in all the other variables and changes. If all that had been so, where in this general area of the world would he base an armed group. If he could figure out that, he'd have a basis to begin his search.

Alder's going to use his mastery of Logistics[+6] and his Book Smarts[+4] to try and use all the information he's gotten so far along with his vast knowledge of resources, natural philosophy, and troop management to try and figure out of there's anywhere in the general area that would be a likely location for a group to setup. Basically, he's figuring out where he'd base am armed group under the circumstances and hope that someone else still alive had a similar idea.

"Aw hell. A woman, a baby, and a buncha kids, with only one defender? I gohta help."

Aeson takes the woman and her baby and moves them into the cart. "Keep 'er still, I'll treat her once I'm done with these bandits!" he tells the children inside.

He moves to a boxer's stance, though unrefined, and uses the last of his speed to run up to the furthest of the goblin highwaymen and sock it right in the jaw.

Tvar - ???
Mana: 11 Divinity: 0

Tvar blinks at the fallen greenskin. It is not a reaction he expected.

BUGS AND EGGS AND HOLES DRY DOWN UNDER SIGHT WITH WRIGGLING WRACKING RACKING STEEL AND STONE AND WOOD AND GLASS

"Who. Why the tube." He asks, mandible snapping shut on the words before too many escape. Tvar wonders briefly what his voice sounds like to the creature. While waiting for an answer, he begins to pick through the bodies. Perhaps they held something useful, or something deadly. He needs weapons. He particularly hopes to find a knife. A good knife is very useful, he thinks. His antennae waft gently, this way and that. Minute vibrations echo down to his head. His four arms turn the bodies over gently. Careful, careful. The soft skin of these mammals tears easily.

He does not remember fighting these sorts of mutants. He surmises that they may be a recent evolution. The cataclysm that wrecked the earth had some strange effects. They are wearing rags. Torn cloaks. He takes from them the thickest pieces he can find, and any leather. If they carried no weapons, he could still fashion them.

Loot the bodies. Make sure to gather a portion of their thickest clothing. Ask the survivor who sent them and why they want the tube.

Caranos - In the Shadow of a Tower

Well, Caranos supposed that was the best he could do here, for the moment. The only thing left would be to try and cut off the wizards from their food supply, and he certainly wasn't well enough equipped for that, no matter how scraggly the various serfs were. Instead he began to head out in search of some clues as to the location of a shard or some other sign of civilization.

We'll keep an eye on this for the future. It certainly seems like one of the larger scale plot threads going on. For the moment though, just gotta keep moving. The plan is to use Fount of Knowledge [+6] to see if the Tower or the leyline it's guarding maps to anything from the former world and head in the direction of former civilization from there. If that's a bust, Caranos will head north.

Korrin Smith - Edge of Ruined City

It was good to find signs of people, but he didn't want to spook them. Korrin walked around the birds far enough so as not to spook them, and found a place in the open to wait for their riders to return. Hiding and surprising the riders would undoubtedly invoke a hostile response, at least in self defence if nothing else, so allowing them to approach him on their terms would hopefully make the owners of the strange striders less threatened by him.

Voices in Stone - With Halfling Caravan

Voices in Stone nods appreciatively. "We are glad to travel with you. We have so many questions about this new world. Who are you? What are the powers that be? What is your errand? Who are your enemies? Why did you call us deaf? What dweomer lies across a wide stretch of land in that direction? Why the the Ley Lines writhe so?" Voices waves a hand, banishing the slight not of emotion that had crept in towards the end of his barrage. "We could go on for days. But first..."

Voices faces the halflings and bows formally. "We are Voices in Stone. We accept your hospitality and pledge guest right."

Voices in Stone squirms slightly as the words pass his lips. With that formality dealt with the conditioning of Rin starts to pound in his ears like a heartbeat. His masters would not have him asking mere bandits to return him to their grasp but a proper host was another matter. Even with the power of their slave-mages and the Imperial Legions, Voices doubts the Rin Imperium had survived this far into the dying of the world. He could not imagine the delicate water gardens of the Court in this arid wasteland. Nonetheless the iron band of conditioning tightens around his mind.

"Good hosts, I must ask you to return me to the Rin Empire." Voices in Stone keeps his eyes down and adds, "If such a place still exists."

Ask a bunch of questions and further cement myself as a weirdo.

there may be people who
find a blender sexy - I
would do well with a more
humanoid model, myself
Wren - With an Orc Trio

“Did you not know Orcs hold dominion over elemental flame?” They seem surprised at your lack of knowledge and stop you as soon as you finish your tale. Their looks turn from curious bemusement to awe.

“Our Elder has told of your coming. Of those like you. It is a standing order to bring you to our Enclave to meet him.” They put a fist to their chest and bow their heads. “We are to promise you will not be harmed, and that you may be rewarded if the Elder deems it so.”

The Overseer - Banterwort

“Very well. You will meet the Tinker to see what work you can do.”

The milita seems pleased enough by your response, and two of them remain as your escort during what you assume to be a probationary period. The shacks that pass as buildings are all made of scraps of others, scavenged stone and nearly petrified wood. The Tinker’s building is the most expertly made, the angles square and the pieces fitted together almost seamlessly. Inside a figure covered in cloth, gloves, and goggles is perched over a table.

“Tinker, we have a newcomer. A golem.” Your guards announce just inside the threshold. You barely have enough time to notice the quality of the tools along the wall before the figure they call Tinker responds.

“By Clanthor's teeth! Out! I will speak to this one alone!” There is fear and amazement in its voice. Even now it is a voice you recall all too well. Once they are gone the figure pulls off the goggles and the cloth over its face. It looks strikingly similar to your own, something you had long since accepted would never be seen again.

“I should have known you would find me eventually, brother. Are the fleets here? I will face judgment, my only request is to save this dying world.”

Remember in your backstory where there were rebels uplifting races and causing poo poo? Yeah this was your parallel on that side. Also your kin from the same assembly batch or growth chamber or whatever your species used to reproduce.

Alder Wrinright - Rame

Alder surmised that if the populated areas depleted their supplies then the relatively unpopulated areas might have fared better. He exited the fort, staying ahead of the figures emerging from the city and traveled through the night to the North. At dawn he traveled West and after several days of this pattern happened along what seemed a settlement in what should have been near the Rame Forest. As he approached it became clear the settlement was inhabited, and under attack by some ragged force of humanoids. A group circling the outskirts quickly made their way toward Alder.

They had a greenish tint and sharp ugly teeth. They held crude weapons. Their mouths and chests were caked in blood. Alder could not help but shudder at the sight of them.

I want to be clear this was actually a success

Aeson Graham - Ruined Road Westward

Picking up the woman and babe seemed to bring them into his accelerated perspective. Not so with the goblin-man he punched, the one with the knife to the driver’s neck. The strike must have added force from his speed as its chest caved in and blasted out its back. The caravan driver reacted by drawing his weapon, pointing it at you, looking at the dead attacker, then stabbing one of the goblinoids fighting the mage in the back again and again. The mage quickly dispatched the other one with his staff before resting on it.

“Thank you stranger. I must rest for a moment to gather my mana. We will need to be off soon as I fear more will follow.”

Tvar - Tube Site

“Goblin said boss wanted us to check out strange things. Dust not storm strange thing. Goblin said maybe reward and meat if good finding.” it sobbed. “Talking bug. Friend bug?”

The shamblers had little more than clubs but the goblin indeed had a very nice knife. Like steel, but lighter. Its edge was keen and it was free of rust or blemishes. It also had a crossbow with a dozen bolts. There were some other trinkets that Tvar did not understand the purpose of in its satchel.

You gain “A very nice knife”, “A goblin crossbow(12) and “A satchel of goblin gear”. And some crummy clubs if you like.

Caranos - In the Shadow of a Tower

The leyline was moving the wrong way. Before the ley lines had flowed inward toward the Tower. It had been common knowledge that the gods were sustaining the world by maintaining the Tower. Now it seemed, though the tower had fallen, the Ley Lines were actually coming from that direction now. It didn’t map precisely to where it should be, it seemed to bend and curve. Caranos tried to follow its path while puzzling out why such certain knowledge he had was evidently wrong. He decided after a day and a night to sit down and think on the matter, seeing a nice stone to sit upon.

No sooner did he sit down did he feel a jolt of energy surge through him.

FFFF. You got a 100 on your d100 roll. You gain 57 mana because the following: Under your butt is a bona-fide chunk of the world-stone. It can be carried but will require both hands. You also have a puzzle on your hands with regard to the ley line.

Korrin Smith - Edge of Ruined City

The scavengers emerge late in the day each holding several large leather bags full of metal, judging from the glint from the full bags. They begin to load up the birds when one of them spots you. They hail you but eye you cautiously.

They seem friendly but guarded.

Voices in Stone - With Halfling Caravan

“We are the Halflings. We trade across the wastes. No such place remains, we are everywhere. We would know of it. Your other questions, things can be complicated. Get some rest and ask them later. We shall also negotiate your share of the claim”

You feel a prophecy of yours coming true. Scratch A reunion will finally occur off your list and gain 1 mana.

The insect warrior shakes his head. He folds his wings into his shell and slings the satchel and crossbow across his broad back.

"Friend bug," he says to the survivor. He gestures to the line of footprints in the sand. "We go." With all four hands he grips the tube carefully. He lifts it with some effort.

Mikhail watches the bugs bury themselves with interest. Were they perhaps trying to ambush him? If they were, they were in for a hell of a surprise.

He shifted his grip on the iron staff and slammed the butt into the dirt. "I am Mikhail Tivkinson and I have seen you. I have no desire to shatter your bodies into many pieces but I will if you provoke me." Striding forward, he idly wonders if they are intelligent enough to listen to the giant with the big metal stick, and if so if they can help him figure this qorld out.

The Overseer - Banterwort

"By Clanthor's tee-" The Overseer caught himself before he sounded like a repeating golem the men thought him to be. "How can this be? When I awoke I could find no signs of us!" That the Tinker had taken on the life-name after the shattering of his worldview was common after a major event. As the Overseer had cast aside his own name. He recognized his old 'gaming' partner. "After our last battle where you leveraged the clandathian star confederation and I sent the gormar shogunate...I was injured when the star went nova in sector alpha-theta-epsilon of the Trident galaxy cluster. When I awoke from reconstruction, the worldships were empty."

It would seem his former advesary in the Great Game had languished here for centuries if not more. Time and space was odd that way, one could through wormhole or hyper-travel end up somewhere before you left the origination point or come out years somewhere from when you left. No one had met themselves (the multiverse abhored internal universal paradoxes) but this was an interesting development. The Overseer continued. "I see you are now The Tinker. I am now The Overseer. I had collected the relics and remnants of our people in my ship before I was captured and dragged into an extra-dimensional space, under the manipulation of a powerful 'wizard' seemingly ages ago in this time-spectrum on this world." His thoughts were more organized now, he could see the patterns emerging both in his own mind and on The Tinker's face.

<'Save this dying world'.> O thought. In the end the two sides had been so alike "saving" the races and/or using them as pawns there was little difference in method. The game perpetuated itself after all, he found himself nodding.

"My ship has been lost, destroyed when the Wizard's manse was sundered. What about your Starborn controller?" (The Ex Machina is an example of one such piece, each was different in function and sort of tailored to who the Starborn who possessed it was. Like the objects you gave us Jamez). The Overseer's memory failed him here. He had wandered the cosmos alone for quite some time before this world. "What was it called? There are no fleets coming, we are scattered to the aetheric winds if not erased completely from this place. We may be the last remnants of the elder kind, what have you been doing here all these centuries, how did you come to be here? Where is here and do you have map? Perhaps a star chart? While we may be stranded for now, maybe we can correct this world. Save it and develop it."

O pondered the problem, it would take time. But perhaps with the Tinker's intellect & local knowledge...and working together they could do more. The Tinker seemed to have built a community and the tools were fine indeed.

Doing: Asking the questions
      • How did the Tinker come to be here?
      • What had happened in all that time?
      • What happened to or where is the Starborn item the Tinker would have had? Did he hide it or lose it? (like the Ex Machina, sort of went into some Starborn history, the Tinker should have one). Perhaps it has crystals...
      • Asking for a "map" but just a general list of interest will do. No info dumps or actual drawn map needed, general direction or landmarks will do!
      • Also asking about Banterwort and what The Tinker has built here.
  • Using. Universal Lore-master [+4] for the interaction and Sole Survivor [+2] to connect with this kindred spirit who believed himself alone.

While I cannot promise that my answers may make much sense to you, I will answer honestly in the spirit of avoiding us trying to kill each other."

Action
Trying to get to talk to the strangers. If they are receptive I have questions for them:
When and where is this place?
Do they know of the wizard who brought us here?
Do the 'hordes' threaten them?
Do other people threaten them?

Caranos - In the Shadow of a Tower

Caranos investigated the ley lines carefully, and frowned at how everything seemed backwards compared to how it used to be. Was the shattering really that much of a disaster that it altered the fundamental nature of the world? Or was the basis for the world's energy flow always wrong and no one had noticed it until now simply because the World Stone was always in the center directing the flow of mana and the ley lines. It was too much of a shock, the scholar needed to sit and ponder this for a while. He paused from his wanderings and observations, and picked a relatively large stone from the midst of the ruined wasteland to sit on. Another rock in this otherwise barren and featureless wasteland. Caranos realized that he probably should have asked the serfs how they were managing to cultivate anything at all out here, so that they weren't farming sand, but that was probably a function of the wizards having accumulated more resources to work with as much as anything to do with magic.

*zzzt*

Caranos got up with a start after receiving a jolt and a large amount of mana from the stone he was sitting on. No, he corrected, the chunk of the World Stone he was sitting on. Well, now he knew what to look for in the future. And indeed, there was a large enough piece here that even if it wasn't enough to satisfy the wizards' absurd request, surely an investigation could be done on how, if it all, it was influencing the ley lines. This was likely to be the best opportunity he would have to examine it, absent more specialized tools which he might not have the opportunity to construct, before bandits and thieves had the opportunity to assail him for the chunk. It was crucially important to do this, for the best way of trying to understand how the world broke is understanding how it worked in the first place.

So yeah, taking the stone. Using Fount of Knowledge [+6] to conduct a series of experiments.

- Will the world stone naturally reconnect itself if you introduce it to other pieces?
- Can a mere mortal even break off a tiny Sliver to test this, or is the stone only able to be affected at all by a cataclysm level force? Or middle ground - is it not so strong that I could break it if I had better tools, but couldn't do so now because i'm limited to my hands and random rocks in the desert?
- The stone clearly emits mana, but is it doing so in a way that is continuous or just a one time burst?
- If it's emitting anything, is it in a form usable as magic, or in a more abstract form similar to the energy of the world. I.e. - is it generating a ley line.
- Does the stone affect the path of the ley line? I.e. Bending or warping it?
- Does the stone have any connection/link to its other parts? If you know what you're looking for can you use the world stone to track other fragments of the world stone by being tugged towards them, for instance.
- Separately, but related: Are the ley lines just moving outward from the center randomly, or are they moving towards anything in particular? The assumption is that they're being anchored by towers so tracking them might be a good way to find the others, but perhaps the lines are moving towards the world stone instead of generated from it and they originate from some other thing in the center of the world? Or they move towards life but that can get a bit messy to track because most of the places tying the lines down also have people occupying them. It might be a good way to track the gods, too, if they're still trying to maintain the world stone.
- If we've been looking at things backwards then maybe the world stone isn't being maintained by the gods but they're maintained by it. In this high of a concentration is there anything similar to recorded outbursts of divine energy?

"Very well. Til the coming dawn." Voices in Stone does not immediately retire however. He walks a slow circle around the camp, pausing occasionally to arrange rocks in various patterns. Once finished he sits cross legged on a roughspun blanket provided by his diminutive companions. He empties his mind and lets his consciousness pour into the ward he has set up. It is a simple thing and will provide only the barest warning. No doubt the halfling traders have more effective sentries. But Voices feels more comfortable having drawn it. Sleep does not tug at him, but dreams do. Voices in stone hums softly and dreams of things not yet come.

Make a simple ward with Geomancy +6 while the caravan camps for the night.

there may be people who
find a blender sexy - I
would do well with a more
humanoid model, myself
Tvar - Goblin Camp

Your new friend, who refers to himself as “Kee”, nods and leads the way. It is some distance back to their camp and Kee talks a bit about the Goblin bosses and how they aren’t going to believe he has a friend bug.

They indeed do not as a metal clanging alarm sounds as you are spotted. You cannot see them, but Kee says “Dey see us. They think you bad bug. Do dis.” He moves his arms in a certain way. (Lets say it’s something like making the Y from YMCA)

Found the Goblins and friends without incident. You can make an introduction or fight or whatever.

Mikhail Tivkinson - We Can't Stop Here, This is Bug Country

Whether they understood you or decided to attack anyway you cannot tell, but when you stopped and spoke they burst forth hissing. Your superior reach allowed you to smash three of them. The other narrowly missed your leg as you lifted your boot and gave it a hearty stomp.

You have four dead Bugs. They can be further broken down into meat, chitin, acid, and other components

The Overseer - Banterwort

The Tinker nodded. “Those we used as pawns rebelled. They played our Game and found playing for themselves against us was best. The survivors on our side scattered, I was lured to this world by a class four event, likely the fall of their fabled World-Tower. It was long ago and my systems have been in need of repair for some time but I will recall for you what I can.”

“The Wizard. Yes. The First Great Wizard. I traveled with him for a long time, we discovered the metal of the Tower could tether the magical Ley Lines of this world. There were others we traveled with, though their information has been corrupted beyond my ability to reconstruct.”

“I still have mine, though it too has diminished with time.” He demonstrates with a motion of his wrist as a tool on the wall shifts into a cube and then a sphere and then back into some kind of lever. “It can rearrange our alloys, but that is all now.”

“It has been a thousand cycles since I have left Banterwort. I have allowed that information to degrade. Outside of here… There are twelve points at the edge of the world, and there should be 12 towers to hold the Lines…” He twitches as his memory glitches. “There are other things but I do not recall.”

“Banterwort is a Haven. Those who have lost their communities by bandits or ravagers or simply run out of water come here. My Vaporators pull the water from the air, scarce though it is. We are safe enough from the Hordes, if more than we can fight occur I still have enough skill to power the defenses.”

The Tinker would need repairs before remembering the extras.

Alder Wrinright - Settlement Outskirts, Rame

The effect was immediate. Ten of the creatures broke their stride as your mind touched theirs. Their thoughts were barbaric and primal. Chase. Kill. Eat. Drink. Thankfully the connection did not last, but they knew to quickly cut down the rest of the group before you were harmed. They then knelt before you awaiting orders.

You have ten Thralls. They are known as Ravagers.

Korrin Smith - Edge of Ruined City

The scavvers nod and allow you to come closer. They continue to tie up their bags as you speak. They do not introduce themselves and are clearly annoyed with you for some reason.

“The time is now, and this is the ruins of some City from before the Fall.”

“Wizards live in Towers, didn’t your Ma or Da teach you anything?”

“Everything is a threat, stranger.” They begin to break out supplies for a meal. It seems like some kind of sun-baked LEGUME. “Do you have anything to share, stranger, or are you all questions and threats?”

You rolled poorly for a social, they seem to have a custom that you have failed to follow(it’s a gift when approaching others)

Wren - The Orc Trio

Many days pass, and the Orc trio pauses often to turn over rocks to find meal-bugs. They use their provisions sparingly, only if they cannot find sources of food or water. They are concerned that you do not need food or water, but since you still look better fed and watered then them after a few days of nothing they stop asking.

They seem to know their path well, avoiding “goblins” and “bugs”. Soon you come to the edge of their conclave. One side is waste but within the fired brick of their great wall is a city much like you recall. Plants, food, even what seems to be a lake. In the center there is a domed building. It is this building they take you to. An elderly Orc, gray-eyed and gray-haired sits upon a boulder of crystal. “Lord, we have found one of the Wizard’s Chosen and have brought him to you as ordered!” They knelt and put their fists to their forehead. The Elder looked shocked and began to laugh as he beckoned you closer. You were lifted up by some magical power and felt your mind being broken into.

First to meet a shard lord. You can try to resist this somehow I guess.

Caranos - In the Shadow of a Tower

quote:

- Will the world stone naturally reconnect itself if you introduce it to other pieces?

Unknown without other pieces to test the theory

quote:

- Can a mere mortal even break off a tiny Sliver to test this, or is the stone only able to be affected at all by a cataclysm level force? Or middle ground - is it not so strong that I could break it if I had better tools, but couldn't do so now because i'm limited to my hands and random rocks in the desert?

You cannot break it with the means you are using now. That is all you know.

quote:

- The stone clearly emits mana, but is it doing so in a way that is continuous or just a one time burst?

You gain 3 more Mana, it seems to emit it at varying amounts. If you concentrated(spent an action) you might be able to gain more in the future.

quote:

- If it's emitting anything, is it in a form usable as magic, or in a more abstract form similar to the energy of the world.

Its function seems to be to continuously emit Mana. You can feel your nerdiness warping it, though. Perhaps if you focused on it(action) it could be bent toward a specific task.

quote:

- Does the stone affect the path of the ley line?

It does not appear to.

quote:

- Does the stone have any connection/link to its other parts? If you know what you're looking for can you use the world stone to track other fragments of the world stone by being tugged towards them, for instance.

You get no sense that it is connected to any other piece.

quote:

- Separately, but related: Are the ley lines just moving outward from the center randomly, or are they moving towards anything in particular?

The Ley Line you see reaches back toward the Center and terminates at the Wizard Tower. Beyond that you cannot tell what it might do free of the tower-- but you are aware that the Wizard who claimed you’s tower was destroyed and its ley line freed.

quote:

- If we've been looking at things backwards then maybe the world stone isn't being maintained by the gods but they're maintained by it. In this high of a concentration is there anything similar to recorded outbursts of divine energy?
Such things are legends and were more the concern of the priesthoods. The Gods maintained many things such as artifacts and Temples. But the Ley Lines are definitely going the wrong way. A theory enters your mind, though: What if the gods weren’t maintaining the world stone but Containing The world stone. A Sphere of Mana-generating crystal maintained by Twelve Beams of Divine Power. Its pieces apparently scattered outward with great force when it broke…

You literally don’t have enough information to find out some of this but you have the answers you can see.

Aeson Graham - Ruined Road Westward

You remove the bolt and fashion a bandage wrap and sling, but cleaning and closing the wound is considerably more difficult when all you have is a few scraps of cloth. You are certain that without some proper supplies the wound will continue to bleed and will probably become infected. The Cart shifts as the axle is magically repaired. You hear the Driver/Father outside. “It’s no use, our horse has a broken leg. Can you heal it, Wizard?”

“I am spent. I will need some time and rest before I can channel any more magic.” The children begin to cry.

You do great but just don’t have the materials on hand and there is the additional complication of the horse.

Voices in Stone - With Halfling Caravan

You are satisfied with your ward until your reverie is broken as the ward is. Something was probing the area, attempting to probe you with a strange sort of scrying magic. The presence withdrew immediately and restored the ward. Your dreams from then on always had a halfling watching in them.

Something happened.

The Overseer - Banterwort

"We will have to repair you. Then we will see how much better you feel." The Overseer spent the next few days repairing The Tinker and familiarizing himself with the village. Its potential and resources. The moisture collectors were a true feat considering the materials leveraged here. All the other information was...useful. The metal he had taken would work very well for his purposes. O would investigate the magical ley lines and the rest further, but first. Fixing the Tinker. When that was finished O would glean whatever else he could from him and bring his vehicle here. This place would be as fine as any to start out in this world.

Once the Overseer had the info he needed and a place to start, he could begin to move forward.

EXCEED CHARGE
Alder Wrinright - Settlement Outskirts, Rame

Alder looked over the kneeling ravagers their blades still wet with the blood of their former comrades and thrilled at the sheer power he now possessed. For the first time in his life, warriors had fought and killed for him. He had managed the details of a dozen campaigns, but this was different. There he had merely been a functionary, facilitating the details of movements, supplies, and equipment. He doubted that any of the soldiers he had managed had ever even known who he was. This though, the beings before him had already killed for his sake, as he knew they would again. More than that, if called for they would die for him, for him. He had underestimated just how intoxicating such knowledge could be. He understood the generals and princes he had served a bit better now.

It took him a few minutes to regain his composure, but once he did he ordered the ravagers into a defensive formation around him. They swiftly obeyed, and he marched towards the settlement to see just what he had encountered here.

Wren - The Orc Stronghold

Mana: 12, Divinity: 0

Wren may not have needed food or water, and trail rations never appealed to him, but he still missed the taste of wine and meat and bread. He consoled himself by imagining there would be plenty for the taking in the stronghold. Assuming wine still existed.

The city was more than Wren had hoped, but much as he expected from a stronghold. And already he could see those familiar notes of what he thought of as home: back alleys, rooftops, the wary and the unwary pedestrians, the constables and the underclass. Familiar yet different, as if a warped reflection in a flawed mirror. It made him homesick.

The shard lord was something else, however. Meeting with the upper crust of society in broad daylight and at their summons was a scenario entirely outside of Wren's experience, and this sudden assault had him entirely off-guard. A cold, murderous anger swept over him, and he reached for his knife. He could probably put it in the old geezer's throat from this distance, but he didn't like his chances of fighting his way clear of the aftermath. No good choices.

Wren hissed. "So did manners die with the old world, or are you just a prick?"

Wren will try to resist, tho no quality applies. Fuckin' ruuuude rear end orc.

The giant sighed at the bugs' fruitless assault. That they thought they could match his obvious superiority was laughable and he did give them an opportunity to stand down. He supposed that maybe they wanted suicide-by-giant as an alternative to living in this obvious wasteland. Leaving the bodies where they lay in the burning sun, he turned and continued north.

Nothing to see here, just a shirtless giant and his big metal staff tromping across the wasteland.

"Our dreams were a busy place last night." Voices in Stone delivers the line without particular inflection. "Perhaps something to do with our 'deafness?' Should we thank the sentinels left behind? And most importantly who was trying to get in?"

More questions! On top of the questions the halfling deferred previously. If I have time would also like to do another geomancy reading for mana just to keep an eye out for surprises or potential loot. Not sure how much of an action conversation is.

there may be people who
find a blender sexy - I
would do well with a more
humanoid model, myself
Overseer - The Tinker’s Memories

At very first you had to overpower the Tinker’s mind. All command-level units attempt to assert their authority when making a direct connection as per standard protocol. The modifications the both of you had made since your initial installation made this much more interesting. If not for the sheer passage of time and lack of upkeep it would have been quite a battle for control.

The early days were parts that were most corrupted. The World was still spiraling out of control, and the Wizard Towers were still being constructed with found materials. Travelers with the Wizard, the Tinker, and the many other faces often claimed items of power. They formed communities, mostly of their own kind, often with humans mixed in.

The Orcs claimed FIre
The Dwarves claimed Metal
The Golems claimed Earth
The Mer claimed Water
The Elves claimed Wood
The Avians claimed Air
The Dragons claimed Aether

Each took a Shard of the Worldstone and focused its power. Effectively immortal and varyingly mad. Tinker never bothered to learn their names. The locations are… difficult to determine. Things can apparently warp and twist with time, but the Shardlands and the Ends of the World are relative paradises compared to the wastelands and even the wizards’ fields.

Aside from that information the town had a Old City nearby that was good for scavenging. The Tinker had not been for mortal generations but it was by any measure still rich with materials. Any other considerations for the location were negligible.

You additionally have the option of repurposing the Tinker. It would have a single +2 quality and count as a thrall. Otherwise it will remain its diminished self.

Alder - Settlement Outskirts, Rame

The attack was still ongoing and grisly. The Ravagers who had not fed enough were tearing apart buildings and chasing stragglers- or feeding on the fallen. Your thralls still felt their hunger but would not act without your orders. They were not exceptionally intelligent.

Zhin - Zhin's Paradise

The condensers were the best source without mana. With mana a small rain system formed over the area. It would not last forever, but would water the tree for the immediate future.

Caranos - Ramfeldrin’s Tower

The gate lifts. The tower is opened to you. A middle-aged man with a chip of the world-stone in a bracelet motions toward a staircase with a scar-covered arm. “The Magus awaits you. It has been a long time since anyone has found such a large piece. And so quickly. We are all on alert.

Up the stairs there was a robed elf in immaculate robes. The usual grime and grit and the dust of the world seemed to simply fall right off of him. His eyes glowed a deep golden yellow and he bid you to sit. “I am Ramfeldrin. I trust you have questions for me. I am curious about one having succeeded so quickly.”

You are in.

Wren - The Orc Stronghold

The old Orc frowned. “You have memories of before, but nothing useful. I had always hoped it would be easier. You have power, though, potential beyond anything I have seen or known in all my time. Would you walk the Path of Fire, sneak-thief? Or would you go your own way? Or the middle path, with us but not among us?”

He is asking if you want to join his not-cult.

Mikhail Tivkinson - Bug Country?

You travel far, in the wastes. Other bugs scurry away from you, sensing the gore of their kin and knowing the danger. After a time you notice something in the air in the distance, looking to be like a carriage the smaller ones use, only suspended from a cloth sack. A few Avian mortals fly out of it and begin to circle you.

Aeson Graham - Ruined Road Westward

The oldest of the kids speaks up as the rest are still crying or shaking with fear. “Ravagers. They are goblin-men who come and eat people. The wizard said he would help save us if he could ride with us.” The Wizard pops his head in. “Healer, could you fix our horse? There is no telling how many more there might be behind us.”

Voices in Stone - With Halfling Caravan

The geomancy reveals the strange warped mana source from before. The other larger field of mana is much more distant than last time. And the Halflings, well.

They all look at you and move in unison. You hear a chorus of voices within your head. “You are one from the time before the Fall. Your coming was prophesied You have power and potential the world knows not. We had to know. Your abilities might save this world or drat it forever. We must know.”

They seem to expect something of you. Then again so did that Wizard.

Tvar - Goblin Camp

You are inspected and brought into a hidden area. A small sheen is all you notice as you enter into the camp and see what was hidden. It is a maze of metal and magic. You are taken to the very center where what seems to be a large brain sits on a metal platform. Mechanical arms look you over, and a voice comes from a machine. “You came from the tube? Birth Tube Hide Fight? Something about the celestial bodies or seasons? Oh I know your kind. But you, perhaps, have more mind. Have more consciousness? Maybe you could be the one of your kind to help end this world so a new one might finally begin. Or would you delay the inevitable for as long as you could in a slow painful decline?”

It seemed to like to talk.

The halfling chorus echoes in Voices' mind. With great formality he kneels, one hand to the ground. "We are a preserver from a fallen empire. We shall mend the earth and tame the raging mana. Life will bloom. We set our foot on this certain path." There is a weight that settles over his statement like miles of stone overhead.

Voices in Stone stands, points to the horizon where the unknown font pulses. "And the first steps are in that direction. Something twisted yet seductive. Perhaps it can be cleansed, perhaps it must be destroyed. Will you lend us your aid?"

Make an Oath and head off towards the warped source, possibly with Halfling aid.

Wren - The Orc Stronghold

Mana: 12, Divinity: 0

Wren makes a show of dusting himself off after he is released from the orc lord's magical and mental grip. "As tempting as it all sounds, I prefer to walk my own path, thank you. Besides, I stand out like a sore thumb here. I prefer to go somewhere I can get lost in the crowd. Know where I can find a place like that?"

Wren declines. He's a Charmer [+2] tho.

EXCEED CHARGE
Alder - Settlement Outskirts, Rame

Alder sent his thralls to attack the other Ravagers. This village wouldn't be much use to him if it was destroyed. He kept one close, and then tried to pick off isolated Ravagers with his Scepter one at a time.

Sending the minions to attack. Keeping 1 behind for defense. While they do that, unassuming[+2] to keep a low profile, while attempting to surprise isolated Ravagers and get them one at a time with the Scepter of Rule[+2].

Korrin Smith - Edge of Ruined City

"Hmm, a friendly sort aren't they." The beast thought, while Korrin agreed but thought it was rich of it to accuse other people of such given its invasion of his sleep when he was young. "That's different." It responded as if the issue did not affect it.

"I can give you some cooked lizard and some trail-bread if it will help you stop being a sarcastic twat." Korrin said grumpily to the nomads. "I've been kidnapped by a mad wizard, then shot out into a desert I don't know in a metal coffin which honestly it is a miracle did not kill me. I just want some answers to try and figure out what is going on and where I am."

Action
Trying to get to the strangers to stop being assholes by sharing some food.

Overseer - The Tinker’s Memories, Banterwort

"Brother. The passage of time has left you diminished..." The desire was there of course, to finally 'win' against his old counterpart in the great game. But the game was over. Possibly forever. O would not strike at him when all the Tinker had done was accept and help him. Plus, they were possibly the last of their kind. No more to be decanted, nor created. They were the last. O fixed all of the security holes, loopholes, and upgraded the Tinker's security suite and OS-daemons with the latest patches that the Overseer had come up with over his own travels and incarceration. "There brother, it may not fix you completely and even be unlikely but I will not have you fall prey to any wild-code."

The Overseer parsed the information gleaned about the world. Travelers with the Wizard. Ah there he was. Even with the Tinker himself. Races, places, and power.
A vague map began to form in O's mind. Nothing concrete but at least a layout. Wastelands, where they were now. The Wizard's fields, near towers perhaps? Shardlands and Ends of the World...some kind of dimensional rift or realm gating most likely. The pieces on the board began to take shape: A figure of an Orc with a flame icon above it, A metallic Dwarf, a Golems made of stone, A Mer with a water icon over its head, An elf made of wood, An Avians with an air icon over its head, and a crystal dragon. The lands and towers were there, but in a more nebulous configuration. The icons for time and space blinked on the HUD, they could be tuned in later.

A resource icon appeared over the location of the "Old City". His current location "Banterwort" showed the water resource and population. The guards, workers, traders, and regular folk. The number denoting offense and defense capability was low, even with the walls surrounding the place.

In any case, the Overseer needed to get to work here. He would make a go of it. "I will go to 'Old City' and check to make sure it will be suitable for our purposes Tinker. I shall return once I know more."

The overseer went back to his Vehiculum and drove to "Old City". The Icon getting closer. When he arrived he would search the place and catalogue its wealth and plunder-able secrets.
    Action:
  • Patching the Tinker's systems, fixing as best as the Overseer is able. No thralling.
    Using: Magitech [+6]
  • Then traveling to Old city in the Vehiculum to deep survey the place.
Using: Universal Lore-master [+4] and Sole-Survivor [+2] when I get there to find what this place will consistently produce for resources/salvage, and any cool finds or secrets.

Tvar - Brain Camp

“You came from the tube? Birth Tube Hide Fight? Something about the celestial bodies or seasons? Oh I know your kind. But you, perhaps, have more mind. Have more consciousness? Maybe you could be the one of your kind to help end this world so a new one might finally begin. Or would you delay the inevitable for as long as you could in a slow painful decline?”

Tvar will not be drawn into conversation so easily. "Yes," he says without hesitation. To which question he leaves unspoken.

SHIFTING SANDS AND ROCK AND DIRT ABOUT THE SWIRL DARK HOLE WHOLE DARK BERRIES AT THE WORLD'S END

"I will help," the insectoid warrior says, into the pregnant silence. He waits for what the brain may say. He recognizes what it is - the softskins were even softer, beneath. This was taught to him in the pits. Tvar learned other things, then, but this world is different. Not certain if any of it still applies. He sees other things, as he waits. Eyes glint beneath panes of glass. He sees many things.

Tvar has the inklings of a plan. He is not familiar with this feeling. He has not had to plan anything. He prefers to plan, even though it is more difficult. Freedom is not a concept he would understand, were it explained to him. But he enjoys it without knowing. Planning is movement, the wind through one one's antennae, the sway of ground underneath one's feet. He understands and enjoys these things.

Tvar is looking around with the goggles of sight, dropping a mana to activate them discreetly (truesight, multispectrum, microscopic). What does he see?

The Overseer - Banterwort

The Tinker looked over a piece of the mage-metal you scavenged. “We theorized that threads of this substance were woven through the central Tower of legend. A massive amount, created in a divine act. The lesser towers the Mages inhabit have this in their construction to tie down the new ley lines.” The Tinker’s head tipped backwards in thought. “The old ley lines were great Beams of divine power radiating from the ends of the world. These ones are arcing currents of power coming from the fallen tower. We helped set the Mages up to prevent them from reaching the ends of the world. It seemed the best stopgap. It was all delays, though, and the world continued to perish. The difference is hard to see in a single mortal generation but even they know their ancestors had it better.“

“I settled here because it had a good balance of resources. It seemed the best place to continue my slow slide into disrepair. There is no great advantage beyond having had a glimmer of hope long ago. It may be the best settlement not tied to a Wizard, a Shardlord, or a Vestige of the gods. I’ll let them know you are my kin, and are to be trusted. Your time here should be short. If you are what the Wizard I traveled with sought then your destiny lies elsewhere.”

You restore him as a Starborn[+2] and a follower. He may patch up his metal-shifting machina in time. The town was the least lovely option back when he settled here, and it remains the best of the bottom of the barrel. It has a steady stream of resources but they tend to be consumed as fast as they are generated.

Mikhail - Avoiding the bird flu

One of them swoops in close to your head and asks, “How did you come to be so large?”

It’s like they’ve never seen a giant before. DM me for chat

Voices in Stone - With Halfling Caravan, By the Thinny

Two halflings come with you. They do not speak in unison, nor do they give their names. When pressed, they do tell you this: “We have repaired many areas like the one you seek. Twisted abominations inhabited them, and this one is the worst of them all. We stopped trying to defeat it long ago. If you can then you will have earned our respect. The mana within is strange and wrong. Backwards, inverted. It sustains the beast within but will sap all else of life.”

The edge of the area shimmers before you, itself a wound in reality.

It’s not Annihilation but it’s still bad.

Aeson Graham- Ruined Road Westward

The bone and muscle and sinew knit themselves back together as the mage pats you on the back. The little magic he had left caused your healing to happen in seconds instead of days or weeks. He falls unconscious and the man(Father) drags him into the wagon and leaps up to take the reins. He motions to you to get in as he gets the horse moving.

You acted as a conduit to magically heal the horse, unfortunately the mage is now metaphysically injured.

Wren - The Orc Stronghold

The old Orc laughed. “There have not been crowds since I was a wee one. You’re out of time, boy. Your best chance is one of the abodes of the gods.” He points outward, toward the edge of the world. “If you find one of the gods, make them pay for abandoning us.”

He’s letting you go, but you can tell he is sorely tempted to keep you for his own ends.

Alder - Settlement Outskirts, Rame

It took a moment for the other Ravagers to realize they were being attacked by their own kin. They counterattacked, though confused. Each clash you pulled another under your spell. In the end the unthralled were wiped out and eight of your thralled Ravagers remained. A few of the survivors had poked their heads out at the commotion and came to realize you had a way of turning the feral humanoids against each other. They did not let their guard down but they came out of hiding and hailed you.

They don’t care for your thralls but recognize that you saved them.

Korrin Smith - Edge of Ruined City

Your story was strange but their bellies were empty. They eagerly accepted your food and allowed any number of questions.

DM me on discord to have the chat go.

Tvar - Brain Camp

The brain droned on about the offenses of the gods and how you would be an instrument of its revenge as you saw a spectral glow around it. It seemed to be only a small part of a larger brain, all connected somehow despite distance. A few parts seemed dead, probably destroyed, but it mostly hummed with activity. Your eyes remained inscrutable and you looked around but saw nothing else out of the ordinary. The Brain moved itself back into your field of view. “Too many words, then? Very well: Travel [towards 11’o’clock direction]. Steal God Essence. Eat slimy Vestige. Don’t. Let. It. Bond. With. You.”

It shooed you off.

A not-very-nice thing gave you a quest.

Overseer - Banterwort

"I see. Then I ask for your aid one last time brother. Help me construct the tools I will need for my journey. We may meet again and one day I will return." O then lays out the plans for two tools. One which would be able to move and lift heavy objects to aid in construction. It could be put to other use but since O would not have many hands to help... The other tool would be able to focus energy. Forge fires and other things would be rare for sure. They would be worn over the hands and be made from both starborn and mage alloys.

    Action:
Using: 3 mana + Magitech [+6] & Universal Lore-master [+4] with the assist from the tinker's Starborn [+2] to make a pair of rad gauntlets to move big or construct heavy things and the other to focus energy for different applications. Using starborn and mage alloys.
