Suntan Boy posted:My daughter loves to draw, but sometimes the inspiration needs a little jump start. This particular book has helped a ton in that regard, and helped broaden her artistic horizons. If your dad is just starting out, something like that might help. That book is really neat, I never knew they made something like that. I used to have some decent drawing ability when I was young. I remember in school we did some exercises from Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and that was really fun. Specifically I remember the one where you take a picture you want to draw, turn it upside down and cover it with a sheet of paper. Slowly reveal a little bit of the picture at a time sliding the top sheet off until you are done drawing. Basically your brain can't "see" what the picture is (its upside down and mostly covered) so you end up drawing more accurately instead of making assumptions about what parts of the image look like. It's kind of scary that it really worked from what I remember.

We had a comedian come to our FOB but when the Chinook landed we started taking rockets. Which was the fashion at the time. He refused to get off the helicopter and left with it. Can't really blame him. I did get autographs from a bunch of WWE women though. Was waiting for a bird to leave Bagram and saw them arrive which was cool. Then our bird got canceled so I went to the autograph signing that night. Still have it somewhere, keep it with my important documents for some reason. Anderson Cooper came to our FOB in '06. We had a really stupid moment of silence where we knew the enemy could watch us to bait them into firing rockets at us. Which they did. On some of the commercials for CNN (I think that's the network he's on?) you can see him turning into the camera saying something like we just took rockets or incoming. If you look closely a bunch of us are being assholes and doing cartwheels in the back on the way to the bunkers.

You don't technically need to be a veteran yourself to join though. I believe if your parents or grandparents qualify you can get it. I knew a kid in college who said he was in but he was one of those types that always has to lie and one up everyone. He kinda soured me on the interest of joining. That being said, whenever my life settles down I do intend to join. The legion helped me get my disability rating so I owe them that much. I will get a life time membership and see if they have any discounts that I could use. I am not really interested in being an "active" member, but with the right group I don't know.

I thought the new MK was a lot of fun. I totally geeked out when the MK song intro chime hit. Costumes were amazing. Kano and Kabal need their own movie. I agree they blitzed through explaining anything but at least they kept the time under 2 hours. I wouldn't want to add 30+ more minutes of exposition to explain the plot of Mortal loving Kombat. Just go from fight to fight I got the basic plot down. Some possible movie spoilers / lore spoilers: So Cole's ability is to get beat up and summon tonfas I guess. I guess it could have been worse. Using the "power of ancestry" was kind of an odd choice considering that that is basically why Johnny Cage and his daughter have the green glow. Apparently Ed Boon supports The Miz (from WWE) to be Johnny Cage. As much as I hate The Miz it might not be the worst choice. Also, fun fact, Kano was never supposed to be Australian. In the original game I think he was supposed to be half American and half Japanese, the Black Dragon kind of being the Yakuza basically. For some reason they made him Australian in the '95 movie and everyone loved it so they retconned him into being Aussie.

I miss the variety I have available in a gym but breathing heavily for an hour in a mask seems pretty unpleasant. Guess I'll just deal with it and pretend I'm one of those dudes that works out in those Bain masks. I have been going to my schools gym mostly to use the elliptical so I can try to rehab my knee with some low impact cardio. I try to go for 45 minutes or more and wearing a mask definitely sucks. I even have the Under Armour mask, which is a good mask. It has one of those built in moldable bridge of the nose wires so I can actually look down. The seal is actually nice but when I am done my face is drenched. Pretty sure it is giving me mascne. Related, not sure if this is the right place to post (I thought there was an exercise thread?) but during lockdown I started doing more with Kettlebells since that was all I had. My friend then introduced me to Mark Wildman on youtube. He does a lot with kettlebells, but also with maces and clubs. I got a mace last year and considering I was doing all online classes, swinging the mace behind me really opened up my shoulders. I really recommend a mace, especially if you work at a desk/computer all day. It will help stretch your shoulders and combat the slouching done on a desk all day. I have a couple clubs now as well, one heavy and two that are just handles that you attach bottles of water too. Club swinging is also a lot of fun and feels amazing on my shoulders. I still can't really do complex movements (knee still not 100%). But I do what I can.

Took me a year of quitting cold turkey, restarting, quitting but a little longer this time, restarting, etc... It's doable dudes. Having gum (normal gum) everywhere helped me out. Like I bought those little bucket containers of gum and kept it at my desk and in the car, it was quantity over quality but it gave me something to do. Don't expect to get it right the first time, but try to learn from your mistakes and figure out what triggers you. Be prepared to gain a couple pounds but that is easier to lose than quitting smoking. I never tried any medications, I forgot why I couldn't get it when I was on Drum. I have done the patches and the nicotine gum. The strong patches gave me a wicked buzz and the nicotine gum didn't do much for me. I found just normal gum helped me get over the urges. This was before vaping so that wasn't an option. I did try e-cigs at the time(2011ish) but they weren't that good yet. I find day 3 of cold turkey is the worst. From what I have read that is when your body is devoid of nicotine and starts freaking out. It gets better after that, a little better, maybe not even noticeable at times but it's there. And then there's the smoking dream! Oh man I woke up mad, your taste buds make you think you just had a cigarette and I didn't know what was going on. MonkeyWash posted:Sorry for your loss. I used id.me to get a discount on some Pit Vipers as a birthday gift for my friend. And one day for myself.... You could also check https://www.govx.com/ for more military discounts. As always shop around and their marketing e-mails are annoyingly motto. Why do they address me by my last name... As for cold weather gear, maybe check tripleaughtdesign? https://tripleaughtdesign.com/ They are full up in summer mode right now but I liked the few (they're expensive!) things I have bought from them. It is like 95% made in the usa and veteran owned. I think they are big in the overlanding crowd. One of the founders moved on and created his own similar company called Prometheus Design Werx. https://prometheusdesignwerx.com/ I haven't ordered from them yet but similar type clothes. I can't tell if either of the companies' clothes are just overpriced for yuppies or if they are actually legit. I have the TAD ranger hoodie LT and it is really nice and I think the hood is rather unique looking.

So I had a dream last night that I was in Starship Troopers and we were going to do an orbital drop. The way this was done was with something like a force field below us as we were falling from space. While falling, another trooper floated over to me and was a girl with short white hair that apparently knew me. Flashback to being on a surfboard in the ocean (Note: I have never surfed) where she surfs up to me while my surfboard is playing Christmas music, embarrassing me. Smash cut back to the jump and she goes over the edge of the force field and is vaporized. Then I see the stats of the 55k jumpers like 10k died during the jump. We land and I make my way to like some interior ruins with another trooper who I think I was calling Dizzy, can't confirm it was her though. Now instead of bugs we are fighting big headed wizards for some reason and they move around like in the OG Doom and Wolfenstein games. A little leading of the rifle and they were easy pickings. We fight our way to a computer room where we learn that SHODAN is attempting to mechanize these wizards and we decide that humanity needs to know this so we start to leave and that's when I woke up and went to a much more boring work day. Melatonin's a hell of drug.

https://www.va.gov/resources/the-pa...oBoCXQ4QAvD_BwE (The website for more info) From what I understand the website had issues at the last cut off date so the new cut off date is 8/14 (Monday). Note that the "cutoff" is only to get a years worth of backpay if you get a percentage from it. You can still file after 8/14 but you would only get backpay from the date you submitted. You can also file an intent to file if you aren't completely prepared to file I guess? You can do it just by starting the claim process: quote:How should I submit an intent to file for a PACT Act disability claim? As for the new presumptive conditions, Gulf War and GWOT are: quote:We’ve added more than 20 burn pit and other toxic exposure presumptive conditions based on the PACT Act. This change expands benefits for Gulf War era and post-9/11 Veterans. If any of that poo poo effects you get on this. Vietnam vets also get some new presumptive conditions as well: quote:Based on the PACT Act, we’ve added 2 new Agent Orange presumptive conditions: This is the full website for presumptive conditions, remember the pact act is just adding some, there was already a list of stuff: https://www.va.gov/disability/eligibility/hazardous-materials-exposure/ Even the Camp Legeune marines get something. quote:Both of these descriptions must be true: Anyway, see the websites I posted for more info.

If anyone knows better, please chime in. It seems like you should get your intent to file by starting the process on the first link I posted. That secures your date for back pay at least. After that I would go talk to a VSO. I don't know the process of evaluation for this. I do recommend everyone check out the original list of presumptive conditions: https://www.va.gov/disability/eligibility/hazardous-materials-exposure/ (Note: I don't believe the original list is eligible for the back pay, I think it is just the new stuff, I could be wrong!) I had no idea it existed but there are some conditions under the OEF page that I could probably argue for. Been seen at the VA for over 6 months for joint pain. The VA has known I have gastrointestinal issues for like a decade now.

As a member of the Getting Old Crew (TM), if you are having issues with tendons and/or arthritis, so far I have responded really well to supplementing with magnesium glycinate. I went from having a gangsta lean because of my left knee to an actual normal gait. Stairs give me trouble but I also just started a week and a half ago. And I still have some weight to lose but this makes it easier for me to be active. I am only taking 100mg, I could probably go up which I will experiment with in the future. If you look into it be sure to pay attention to the different types of magnesium, glycinate is supposed to be easy on the stomach and have a higher absorption. Whereas oxide is cheap and has a lower absorption. Citrate might be harder on your stomach. Disclaimer: IANAD, YMMV, ask your doctor if listening to an idiot on the internet is right for you.

Just saw Godzilla Minus One and wow, this was the first Godzilla movie I have seen in theatres but it was awesome. I think it's the last day it's playing in the U.S. unless it got extended again. It's a return to Godzilla being the villain, which I admit I like when he's the hero fighting other bad Kaiju (King Ghidorah!! ). Which, protip, the Pluto TV app now has a dedicated Godzilla channel and it's playing like 30+ of the movies in order. It seems to repeat every 4-5 days. And it's free. I still like Minilla even if he is useless and gets hit in the face with rocks. CGI looked great and his atomic breath was crazy. There was a really weird plane in it called the Shinden ("Magnificent Lightning") which from a quick google search was real. It's notable because the propeller was in the back along with the wings. Really weird design, but I am not a plane guy. (No spoilers but I bring up the themes of the movie) Strong themes of PTSD and survivor's guilt which might resonate with some people here. Also quite judgmental of the Japanese government. I had heard Shin Godzilla was like that as well but I still need to watch it. And the music was on point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvMCy0r-PiM
