There was a 'polite' racism, a societal racism that still runs pretty heavy in modern society. You couldn't get away with drat near beating a minority in the streets of a big town for literally no reason- that was from earlier times. No, at that point everyone had to grin and get along and barely put up a facade of tolerance.

The episode literally mentions the murder of Emmett Till, who was literally lynched for smiling at a white woman only a few months before the Montgomery bus boycotts started, you utter cockwomble.

One small detail I like about the Doctor breaking the rules of regeneration is that the clock strikes fourteen, not twelve.

Given the whole episode was about Eleven finally accepting Handy and War, and what that entails, it’s a nice touch.

Also, you can’t have a Christmas special without this sort of fun romp. You just can’t.

Pretty much, although there's no spaceship causing nuclear hellfire on London.

The two major themes are basically: a) late-stage capitalism continues being late-state capitalism and b) the technological singularity is closer on the horizon.

Today's episode has been more about the former.

e: Apparently, according to people who have their copies of The Writer's Tale to hand, it's more like Children of Earth but without the aliens.

Still, we laughed, she hummed along, and I got to introduce her to INXS with the next song.

Weirdly the much-maligned (and mostly justly so) Zygon episode is somewhat better in this regard, as the Zygons settled on Earth peacefully as part of a treaty and it's an extremist faction (and not the entire Zygon race, and don't get me started on the science fiction tendency to treat alien species as simple monocultures) that's causing the trouble while most of them would just be happy getting on with their lives.

It's still got a lot of awful subtext (such as the extremist faction's main grievance being that they want to still maintain their identity as a non-human species and this is somehow bad) but it's marginally more nuanced than most of the other "welp our planet blew up TIME TO KILL ALL HUMANS" stories the show's done.

Then again, it's a Peter Harness script.

I deffo don't think I'd call it a fetish because it's consistently portrayed as a violation.

The second episode was basically about ritualistic memory wiping.

With some marvellous misdirection, I might add; of course people would remember Terrence Hardiman as the Demon Headmaster, and immediately see him as the bad guy.
