DUSK is a 90s-inspired retro FPS by David Szymanski and New Blood Interactive. It plays like Doom, Quake, Blood, Duke 3D, Hexen, Half-Life, Redneck Rampage, and all the classic 90s hits you remember.

Somewhere in rural Pennsylvania, they found something deep beneath the Earth. That something started making people go insane. Then the military had to get involved, and it made the military go insane.

You came to the town of Dusk to find out what that something is. But before you could find out, the cult of Dusk found you. And now they want you dead.

FEATURES

THREE SINGLE PLAYER EPISODES. Intrude the outskirts of Dusk in THE FOOTHILLS. Find out just how deep things go in THE FACILITIES. Realize the ultimate truth in THE NAMELESS CITY.

INSPIRED LEVEL DESIGN. The game's creator worked based on the mantra of WWJRD - What Would John Romero Do? Rustic farm terrors and rusted factories give way to vaunting Gothic hellscapes and non-Euclidean nightmare realms. But even in places man was never meant to tread, you still need to find the red key to open the red door. Some things never change.

LETHAL FOES. Possessed Cultists, Scientists, and Soldiers along with bloodchilling horrors like Wendigos and the Hounds of Torment make up the Cult's forces. But there are more than a few bosses who await only the most worthy.

WICKED ARSENAL. Dusk arms you with a classic staple of FPS standards, with a few fun twists. Slaughter your enemies with sickles, pistols, shotguns (single and double barreled), bolt-action rifles, crossbows, swords, and the absolutely mandatory grenade and rocket launchers.

CLASSIC MOVEMENT. Your default walk speed is about 0.8 Doomguy Units, or 20 miles per hour. Every attack can be dodged as you strafe jump and bunny hop your way to victory. hup hup hup hup hup hup

NO HEALTH REGEN. Health packs and power ups are the law. Hunt down secrets to ensure your survival.

UNENDING GUNFIRE. No reloading. Instead, you have a dedicated button for doing cool flips with your gun.

VINTAGE GRAPHICS. Low-poly 3D, low-res textures, and chunky loving gibs.

BOSS METAL SOUNDTRACK. Tunes courtesy of Andrew Hulshult, who did the music for Brutal Doom and the Rise of the Triad remake. Dusk's soundtrack is a marriage of Trent Reznor's Quake and Mick Gordon's Doom, with bone-grinding metal riffs and haunting dark ambient soundscapes in equal measure.

VIDEOGAME PHYSICS. In the game's only consolation to modern design sensibilities, there's tons of objects in the world you can interact with. Flush stuff down the toilet, cook gibs on an open fire, and kill enemies by picking up and throwing gas cans, boulders, sawblades, and....soap? Sure, why not?

ENDLESS MODE. Three separate maps in which to test your might against wave after wave of bloodthirsty horrors.

MULTIPLAYER. Frag your friends in Duskworld, which brings the game into the realm of classic twitch-shooter deathmatch. The community organizes Frag Nights every Saturday at 6pm Pacific. TDM, CTF, and co-op are planned for a future update.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE. Smoke cigars, eat hash, and get drunk after only four beers - just like in real life!

UNLOCKED Y AXIS. The future of motion sickness is finally here. Nothing's stopping you from doing a quintuple backflip every time you rocket jump. The only limit is yourself.

BUT DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR IT

Game Informer: "Dusk doesn't mess around with leveling mechanics or a sprawling narrative; it hands you a shotgun and lets you loose on a demon army. This simplicity is Dusk’s greatest strength, because this no-frills shooter is an excellent crash course in basic game design."

Rock Paper Shotgun: "It’s a game that starts off great, and then gets better with every level, until its massive climactic apogee. You don’t often get to say that."

PC Gamer: "Dusk doesn't recreate what FPS games were like in the '90s just to do it again. Dusk instead captures how those games feel now in my mind, tinted by 20 years of rose-colored memories. It shouldn't be possible, and it's a remarkable achievement."

Total Biscuit: "DUSK is loving great and you’re better off playing that than arguing on forums about things."

Destructoid: "Dusk may well be the best shooter I've ever played."

STILL TO COME

Can we talk about other throwback shooters like Ion Maiden, Amid Evil, Devil Daggers and (lol) Strafe here?

Hell yeah we can.

I think I played Strafe for a total of maybe 20 minutes. It was pretty disappointing.

Conversely, I played Devil Daggers for a total of maybe 20 minutes and it's a guaranteed way to spike my blood pressure.

I can see why people wouldn't like it all, but to me Devil Daggers is pure.

Anyway, really hope they release some extra episodes for Dusk down the line since the game is just so good. I hope it becomes attractive to modders too.

DUSK is v good and Amid Evil is an excellent companion game if you finish DUSK and wish you had more shoosts

additionally, if you desire yet more shoosts, Overload is also a really good game and IMO the best shooter of 2018 (which was, amazingly, a tight contest)

really looking forward to Ion Maiden

DUSK is loving phenomenal. I got it & beat it last month, best shooter in years. I hate retro bullshit, I think it's dumb to be retro for the sake of being retro, but DUSK is such a good game that I can overlook it. The gunplay feels good, the music really pumps, but best of all the level design starts out strong and just gets better and better. It never becomes stale, and it never feels overly gimmicky. If you're reading this thread wondering if you should get this game the answer's yes.

I just beat DUSK the other night and I was wondering about this. I do want more shoots. Is it just more DUSK but with a Heretic skin or is it structurally closer to Hexen?

I've been a bit surprised that in this thread and elsewhere I've not seen any comparisons to Unreal, either. It's faster, and not as open, but it has a similar exploration focus, and a lot of the lighting and texturing choices remind me of Unreal very much.

I can definitely see that. That's one of the things that really makes me love DUSK too, is that it's not calling itself oldschool while being just a gated arena shooter with mob of dudes after mob of dudes.

Looking at you, Painkiller.

There is! The community organizes Frag Nights every Saturday at 6PM PST. Right now the only multiplayer mode available is standard deathmatch, but TDM and CTF are coming sometime down the line.

Yeah, this what elevates DUSK from Good to Great IMO. It understands 90s shooter design in a way most retro shooters don't and its constantly willing to play with its own rules to make really striking, memorable levels like Escher Labs and The Sunken City. And it has surprisingly good environmental story-telling and a few legitimately good, smart scares mixed with a great 90s sense of humor. It is both supremely retro and in possession of its own unique identity as a game.

Oh, and I would totally buy another three episodes for 10 bucks, especially if they added some more inventive weapon design. I think that's just about the biggest flaw I can find in an otherwise magnificent game - all the weapons were very boilerplate.

I feel like STRAFE got better with subsequent updates, but never became the game that most people (understandably) expected it to be: That of a fast, frantic, violent FPS game in the vein of Quake--but with procedural generation. When people played the game and found it to be a slower FPS Roguelite with some questionable gameplay mechanics, the people who defended the game claimed it was clear as day that the game was never meant to be a fast-paced FPS circa 1996.

But I mean, for gently caress's sake, this is its website.

Nonetheless, I ended up playing a lot if it (poo poo, Steam says 51 hours) and appreciated it from the perspective of a FPS Roguelite, which is a genre that doesn't really have a lot of stiff competition (there's, like, Ziggurat, Immortal Redneck, maybe City of Brass and Mothergunship...not a whole lot of stellar titles though). It's been a while since I had it installed, but I know that several of the later patches actually improved the gameplay quite a bit.

They were pretty standard, but I think it works. I really enjoy that the crossbow goes through anything and can give you lateral solutions to a lot of the levels. The grenade launcher is literally the first weapon in this kind of game where I've enjoyed using it. Lot of it is just nicely executed, even if it's not groundbreaking.

I got this due to thread recommendations. I thought I had gotten too old and boring to like shooters but it turns out that it was the shooters that had gotten old and boring. The genre has gotten really bloated and slow from all the skill trees, stealth sections and side games.

The game is a blast. Get it.

It's mostly done right now. Mostly. 5 of the 7 chapters are available with the game, and the 6th chapter is available if you go in the Amid Evil Discord and get a password to download the latest beta. The game's mechanics have been tweaked quite a bit since the initial releases so, for example, enemies have more diverse AI (so fewer instances of every single monster ignoring their "role" and mindlessly trying to get up in your face at the same time). I think it's a fun game. It plays quite differently than DUSK, but still feels like a classic FPS in a lot of ways.

I'm sad that I burned through this game as soon as I picked it up in the sale, and now there's no more of it. It definitely nails the old quake vibe. Other games try to be old school shooters but without understanding what made those games work, so they insist on adding mechanics like a stamina bar or a reload button, or they slow the character down to a crawl. This one does it just right.

Fuck you say?
I beat this game yesterday and got more and more amazed by how good it was as I went on. The first few levels are a pretty "yeah this is okay but nothing special" but the more you play the crazier it gets. The level design is wonderful and everything about the movement and gunplay is spot on - I wish the weapons were a bit more exciting though. I want another three episodes or a solid sequel to enjoy.

I only found out after beating it that there are sliders for pixelation and a graphics option to limit the palette for a more accurate 90's software rendering effect and now I'm sad because I would've definitely played the game that way initially if I knew. Just means I have a reason to play it on the second to last difficulty now :black101:

Here's a look at an early build of DUSK. Fun to see how much things changed over development.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8X2sPPEKbqs

The melee weapon was originally a hammer (no sickles :ussr:), the Assault Rifle bore much more resemblance to an M16, and the Super Shotgun was pump-action, in a reference to Chasm: The Rift. Buzzsaws were also their own weapon, instead of being physics objects as they are in the completed game.

Other cut weapons include a classic Chainsaw that would have its own ammo supply. There was also a weapon called the Totem that looked like it was made out of popsicle sticks. It fired low damage projectiles at a high rate that would bounce off walls and regenerate ammo over time. If there are plans for expansion/DLC content, I'd be surprised if some of these weapon ideas didn't make it in there in some form or another.

The Cigar was also included from the very beginning. :clint:
