Psycho Knight posted:Also, I hope you all like Starfire and/or Teen Titans GO! Tama's speech pattern involves sprinkling 'the' all over the place. It sounds exactly as loving irritating as you would expect. Anyway, I thought this game was fairly good. Didn't much care for some of the graphical and gameplay decisions, but there were other ones I thought were great. Though I suppose I should wait for you to get there before commenting on what those are.

I may not like the full grown appearances in this game, but the chibi forms are absolutely adorable. I also like the way this game has more capture requirements than just "get their HP low". It actually makes capturing monsters a lot more interesting, and can even occasionally give you a way to get through a battle too tough for you to actually beat. Most of the other stuff is kinda... OK? Like, stacking can be interesting in trying to create good combinations, but at the same time it'd be nice if going in with separate units was actually practical, as you wind up with all of these options on two units, because if you split up you'd get creamed. I will give them points for originality though, and it's not like the mechanic is actively bad like some other things the series has tried out. It's more of a mixed bag. But the best part of this game is most definitely the monster descriptions. The writers were having way too much fun with those.

My opinion on Snow is a bit odd, in that I usually despise "idiot hero" types and yet he didn't really bother me. Maybe it was just because I didn't like the person they were actually presenting as the protagonist... or most of the other party members come to think of it. Or maybe he became even more insufferable in the sequels and as I never bothered with those I never noticed. Oh well, with regards to this game I still have to wonder how Snow was planning on beating a creature that was weak to magic when he's very much a physical specialist. Just let Shiva do all the heavy lifting, I guess?

I think I have vauge memories of having seen a bit of the Final Fantasy 5 continuation years back. I can't remember much about it though. Just that the girl in the story somehow absorbed the crystal which caused her butt to glow. And some pirates were having her drink prune juice to try and force it out. It was weird. But not as horrible as 7's Compilation, everything post 10-2, and the less said about what they did to the cast of 4 the better. After Years was just so, so badly written...

Yeah, I got caught off guard by Everybody's Grudge the first time I tried that boss fight. Not exactly the best game design to have a one-hit party killer hidden away like that. Gives you a healthy respect for the king, though. Still, so long as you know to pile on the damage all at once or pump up your Darkness resist you'll be fine.

To accidentally wreak the world once is a tragedy. To do so twice seems like carelessness. Also, I love how even Segwarides' team can't stand his theatrics.

Hauyn has every reason to be pissed at those two. They basically invited the Borg/Cybermen/whatever-you-wanna-call-them into a world that has no way to fight them off, and apparently serves as a dimensional nexus allowing them to invade countless other dimensions/realities/timelines/worlds/what-have-you. While unleashing a bunch of other unrelated giant monsters on the populace in the process. But is still doesn't look good to scream at a couple of amnesiacs for mistakes made through a lack of information.

Lann and Reynn really are the absolute worst JRPG protagonists. Oh sure, there are other protagonists that screw up on occasion, or fail to stop the villain from doing something heinous to the world, or are outright evil, but I struggle to think of any that are so singularly incompetent as these two. They acted like complete brats, invited the villain into the world, sealed away their "friend" for trying to talk sense into them, got their parents possessed, opened up the villain's portal again allowing him to bring in a whole lot of minions, proceeded to then get their parents and friend killed, and Lann's "heroic" sacrifice... solved absolutely nothing. Good job, guys!

Huh... OK, I stand corrected about "worst JRPG protagonists". That's pretty bad.

Well, I only have the basic version of the game and didn't bother with the post-game stuff, so everything from here on out will be new to me. So that'll be fun to see at least. As for the basic game though: while some of the writing was iffy and the mini-games were atrocious, for the most part the game was pretty fun. But something I think was solely lacking was the presence of Final Fantasy villains outside of the recurring joke bosses. I mean, I get that a lot of the main villains would have been hard to put in there as many of them don't fit a second banana role very well, but on the other hand these are some of the most remembered personalities from the series, and it would have been nice to see a bit of them at least. If there's ever a sequel I hope at least some of them can show up. But then while I'm wishing pointlessly about theoretical sequels I'd love to see some of the more obscure characters show up, or ones from the less popular games, like some of the Dimensions or Mystic Quest cast.

Make no mistake, TAY was more than boring. It truly was terrible, at least in writing. Not only was there a lack of character development with the old cast in many ways, the huge amount of time between games made that even worse. Like, Edward being devastated by the loss of Anna? Fine. Edward's advisors begging the man to produce an heir 17 years later? Not so fine. Heck, I'm willing to believe he still misses her, but for a man shown to be the most intelligent of the cast you'd think he'd at least look at adoption or something so his kingdom would be a little more secure. And likewise, I can understand Kain not feeling comfortable with the others and wanting to find a way of purging himself of what made him vulnerable to influence from the darkness. But spending 17 years on top of Mt. Ordeals with absolutely nothing to show for it? What was he doing all of that time? And for that matter, why was his eventual turn to the light accomplish by accepting the darkness? I'm pretty sure that's the opposite of what shown to be necessary in the previous game. Heck, the fight with Cecil and Cecil in the original actually had an interesting theme, as the best way to win was to do just defend yourself and let the self-destructive nature of darkness play itself out. Actually I'd love to know why the test to become a paladin actually makes an evil duplicate that can apparently just leave and do whatever the heck it feels like. Or then there's even cases of character regression with Rydia and Porom, two headstrong and tough young ladies who apparently grew up to be passive bland waifus (and I still have no idea why Porom suddenly had pink hair). And there is nothing interesting about the new characters. Nothing. Every single one of them is either just an inferior version of a previous character, or a worthless waste of space with no abilities worth using. And then there's the story. Ooooooh how I despise the story. You know, you wanna have a game where everything is recurring and the characters are actively noticing that? Fine, just so long as you do something with that? If there had been some kind of time-based shenanigans going on to explain it at least that would have been a plot of some kind. but do you know what the reason was? Nothing! Absolutely nothing! Everything kept playing out the same way as before, with Edge even going so far as to be willing to jump out of the Tower of Babel because there was an airship last time so there should be one this time too! And there was! But there's no reason for any of it! Apparently it was just one big string of coincidences, because the writers were a bunch of hacks who should have been fired after the first draft was submitted for failing to rise above the standards of a fifth grader's fanfic. The inclusion of Bands was the only thing that game had going for it, and everything else was either just the same thing again or actively worse.
