It seems like he burned most of his bridges getting Age of Ultron out the door and Warner Brothers took him on because he was the only person with the right kind of experience willing to do the nightmare job of being hatchetman on Justice League. When that bombed as well it was time's up.

It's because Whedon talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk, while Snyder does the opposite.

one of very few upsides to the marvel treadmill making directors less relevant is it's easier to chuck one out once putting their name on a product is more of a liability than an asset

It still blows my mind that Snyder got like a week of straight hatred for the entire internet for saying he didn’t see anything wrong with BvS but when Joss Whedon said the same thing about his absurdly sexist Wonder Woman script nobody batted an eye.

if i'm remembering the chronology right no one batted an eye on the latter because this was post-'joss whedon tries to explain to us about how cheating on his wife with a younger employee was hard on him' so there weren't many vocal whedon defenders to do a back-and-forth, everyone just went 'oh of course that creep wouldn't think there was anything wrong with that crap script' and went on with their day

I think part of it is that Snyder has the outward appearance of a stereotypical jock bro yet he seems to be a genuinely nice guy. People who work with him always complement him on what a nice person he is to work with. And there was never a hint or suggestion of anything improper during the whole #metoo thing.

Yeah, like seriously. And then comic book fanatics love Justice League Apokolips War where their heroes are torn apart violently on screen and things are gloomier and grimdark than anything I’ve ever seen from Snyder.

I think they only want superficial nonsense and nothing that dives deeper because diving deeper means the way they perceive their heroes and comic books in their head is messed with and it makes them uncomfortable

I've seen it on Sideshow Toy's FB groups - these characters can only be done ONE way to them. If you dare deviate it's GARBAGE in their eyes. Pattison is the latest to get poo poo on. These people are so closed minded to different takes on these characters. The other poo poo exists, there is still media being produced with the boy scout Superman and no kill Batman. So what if someone gets inspired to make a tale. So much gatekeeping by these groups of people amplified by the internet groups.

I still think it's somewhat dangerous to assume it's one specific group who likes it. I'm willing to bet a lot of #RtSC people are general DC fans who liked it, and probably plenty of the people who poo poo on Snyder and DC hate it for the same stated reason* they hate DCEU stuff

*I still obviously think they're wrong about this part, and that Marvel's cynical pop corporatism is in actuality much grimmer than Snyder and Nolan's "hope can arise out of darkness" narratives

Lmao what

That movie is one of the most nihilistic things I've ever seen, with the movie treating the universe being changed by one man as a good thing.

Those DC Animated Movies have been garbage for a long time, but that one was a whole new level.

Allen and Polanski aren't really relevant (or possibly even known) to the "post angrily about superhero movies on the internet" crowd.

These folks weren't born, or were literal children, when Allen and Polanski were getting up to their various sex criminal bullshit.

Remember the reaction to Scorsese’s criticism? “Who is this guy?”, “What’s the last movie he made?”, etc.

I thought I read somewhere WB might have been using the reaction to Apokolips War as a barometer to guage the potential reception to Snyder's Justice League? Or was that just a straight up unfounded rumor?

I like Apokolips War as the capstone film to a mostly forgettable movie series. As such, I found a majority of the DCAMU New 52 continuity features to be on par with most MCU films. The DCAMU was clearly modeled after it (some of the films even had post-credits stingers that teased upcoming movies).

Yeah, the “Zack Snyder’s too grimdark” thing was never that person’s actual criticism. They’re fine with super dark, self-serious poo poo happening in a superhero movie. Thanos genocided half the universe and killed Spider-Man; that was fine.

But BvS made Batman look like an unstable lunatic, and Superman look like a naive tool. It criticized the power fantasy behind those characters, like it’s a bad thing for a traumatized child to turn himself into a revenge monster.

Yeah, I grew up watching stuff like Guyver, Wicked City, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, etc., in the early 90s. Violent and gory anime imprinted on me at an early age, lmao, so I guess maybe that's also why I'm partial to Apokolips War. My parents also let me watch Robocop and Predator at an early age as well.

The first time I saw Vampire Hunter D was on broadcasted TV weirdly enough. It was showcased on a local station's sci-fi/horror film segment lol. I remember renting the Guyver OVAs from Blockbuster because the box art looked cool, and then I watched it and my mind was blown.
