 I was a cheater as a kid. Mom would go to the grocery store, I'd tag along with her with a notepad and pen. I'd hang out at the magazine aisle and copy down cheat codes from books and cheat magazines. Most of the time the cheats worked, though sometimes they were duds. Occasionally, other magazines would have the same cheats with a different code that did work. If I was really lucky, sometimes I'd find a new cheat altogether when I previously thought I had them all.  My cousin bought Gameshark one summer and I remember asking for it for my birthday once I saw what it could do. I still don't really know how it works to this day, but it adjusts some codes or values or whatever and you got cheats. It wasnt as simple as traditional cheatcodes since you had to have an extra memory card/accessory and disk, but you at least got to play around with things the developers didn't intend for you to have access to. The quality of the cheats were another matter. Some would work, some would corrupt a save file, some would stop the game from loading entirely, some would do nothing. It didn't discourage me much as a kid, because it was still quicker than the grocery store adventures I'd go on. My favorite cheats were the ones that technically worked. The infinite health cheat did freeze your health bar, but it still ticked down behind the scenes. Yes, I have 99 crystals beat the game with, but there were no more than 26 in the game and the game thinks I have 0 instead. Or maybe, one of the cheats broke the if-then conditions in a storyline and you could never progress, since you had that sword 6 stages earlier than you were supposed to.  I play games normally nowadays, more or less. The lines are blurred with modding since the rules are disregarded or replaced altogether. One thing I still repeatedly do is play GTA San Andreas for the cheats. My buddy has an old vintage console setup in his room. Alongside him playing Destiny 2 on modern equipment, I'll be playing San Andreas with my phone out, looking for cheat codes and making self imposed gameplay challenges with pedestrians riot, pedestrians hate you, pedestrians have weapons, cheats. Yes I know the above is GTA3. What are your experiences with cheat codes, cheat engines, and other things of similar nature? Are there any games today you still play because the cheat codes open up so much?

i never actually played turok 1 correctly. I'd just load it up and turn on all the uber weapons and just nuke the raptors and bad guys on the first stage over and over again until I got bored, which wasn't very quickly cause the strongest weapons in that game were amazing. I wouldn't have the same itch scratched for YEARS until someone put atomic bombs in Garry's Mod and you could build a little house and completely vaporize it.

My favorite code was a little difficult to pull off, you had to paint a pentagram and light black candles and then put the cart in the middle and bleed on it. It gave me one extra life in Mega Man 7.

cheat engine had an interactive tutorial at some point in time. if you skipped it the program would pop up a little window that said FINE JEEZ and go away

I still play the original Doom / Doom 2 a lot. I have GZDoom configured to disable the ammo cap so I can pick up infinite shotguns and poo poo  It's oddly satisfying

I was always anti cheating and wanted to meet another kid who actually knew the story in any games ever. When my friends would cheat I would walk home and look at the chicks in the back of my gaming mags. Now when I watch my sisters kids refuse to play any game normal style it drives me crazy. I was and remain a real wet blanket.

I remember using cheat codes to get infinite money in the original Sims so that my characters didn't have to work if only real life worked that way
