It's real wierd to have fotecast the decline and balkanizarion of the USA as an edgy teenager a decade ago, and now be watching it in real time. It's like telling your buddy that he's gonna poo poo on his own face in a week - and then subsequently watching him stop on the sidewalk, get into the tubgirl pose, and go to town like free willy coming up for air. You're just left with a mixed feeling of awe and disgust, really.

Oh boy, I wonder what's gonna happen if this shutdown drags out all year, that's gonna be nuts. The only sure thing to come out of this is that Trump supporters will still support him no matter how penniless and homeless this makes them. Gonna be a shitshow for the ages

Parrotine posted:Oh boy, I wonder what's gonna happen if this shutdown drags out all year, that's gonna be nuts. It won't drag out all year. Eventually the TSA and Air Traffic Controllers will be on strike in all but name. The airports will be unofficially shut down. When rich people can't jet around the country as a "business expense," then McConnell and the GOP will be forced to allow a vote. Also, today's Gallup poll has Trump at 37% approve/59% disapprove. The longer the shutdown drags on, the worse those numbers will get, and the worse those numbers get, the more GOP'ers in Congress will feel free to defy him on this. The real frustration comes when the shutdown is resolved and Trump's approval bounces back up to 44%. Because nothing matters. Rutibex posted:wouldn't flights be faster if TSA goes on strike? Nope. Rather than just let everyone on without going through security, they would instead let no one fly. They're really committed to this TSA thing, and if they let people on planes without going through TSA checkpoints and another 9/11 didn't happen, they'd have to explain why we've spent trillions of dollars on TSA for the past 17 years. They're not going to let that happen.

The whole situation is just pathetic. We shouldn't have to deal with this, neither as a nation nor as a workforce. If we aren't going to be paid, we shouldn't be expected to work, and yet, if we don't work, our country falls apart, fast. So, it's patriotic to work our role, even without pay. But it certainly doesn't mesh with capitalist ideology that the current administration champions.

Why dont people just quit their jobs then? If they're not gonna pay employees what they're rightfully owed and not allowed to strike, then just....quit? What are they gonna do, fire you for the job that doesnt pay? Look for any other type of hourly paying job to make ends meet until July 2019 or whenever this finally rolls over

Hooray for throwing money away due to brinksmanship.

A bunch of TSA people already have, and more are going to join them every day. But the country is also at full employment and employers are hesitant to hire because everyone believes that we're due for a recession. So the people quitting now are probably the ones who were able to easily line up alternative, comparatively-paying employment. But the rest of them who aren't easily able to find another job, to them working with the promise of being paid later is better than not working at all.
