A food bank in Washington, DC reported an influx of federal workers.

Radha Muthiah, head of Capital Area Food Bank, said that dozens of volunteers are working to pack bags of food for affected staff.

Of the 800,000 federal employees going unpaid, about 350,000 are furloughed - a kind of temporary lay-off - while the rest are continuing to work.

Thousands have reportedly applied for unemployment benefits amid the financial uncertainty.

The point was that when half your pay already goes to rent it's hard to put aside 30% and still cover all the other things you still need like groceries, utilities, car payments and insurance, and so on so it's more likely going to take much longer to save an emergency fund.

It is when you can get FREE BEER!!!!

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/pay-it-furloughed-offers-a-way-to-buy-a-beer-for-federal-workers-hit-by-shutdown/

quote:

About 800,000 federal workers haven't seen a paycheck since December 22, and one organization is hoping to relieve some of their stress by collecting donations. Donations of free beer, that is.

"Pay It Furloughed" allows people to buy a beer for a furloughed worker in the Washington, D.C. area. "Beer makes everything better, so we're buying local craft brews for federal employees impacted by the government shutdown," the website reads.

Those who would like to donate to can buy one beer at $7.50 or a full six-pack for $45 from one of four participating bars in Washington, D.C. Any federal employee or contractor over the age of 21 can visit the bar with their ID and receive a free beer. Over 1,600 beers have been bought by donors so far, though the site says only 157 have been claimed as of Wednesday afternoon. Furloughed workers in D.C. are invited to claim one of the remaining free beers.

You said 30% of remaining, saving 15% of your net isn't unthinkable.

Also most low income people pay half their income for rent if single, it indeed does suck but that part isn't abnormal.

no, it's just CNN being clickbaity.

the article itself (which I got from an aggregator offsite because gently caress giving a headline like that views) said exactly this:

quote:

'They're in such a tough position'
"The Office of Government Ethics could issue an opinion clarifying the government's views on this, but that office is closed during the shutdown," Shaub said.

basically every modern government has so many laws that you are probably technically violating one pretty much every day. the question is whether or not anyone cares. nobody gives a gently caress about whether or not some hack journalist thinks he found a technical gotcha in a law that has nothing to do with the situation it's being applied to.

e: the law the article's referring to is one that prevents government workers from accepting gifts from people outside the government (as an anticorruption measure). if someone tried to take this to court the defense would be "they were furloughed and not working for the government at the time and are therefore not subject to this law." it's a trivial case to make.

It's really funny how individuals are forced to save individually for retirement. To take advantage of the best tax benefits for savings that money is essentially locked away until retirement age. This means, to most effectively save for retirement, workers should be working paycheck to paycheck, but when they lose their jobs or dont get paid, they get slagged off for not saving more.
