Speaking of trans people:

In general, I find TERF stuff baffling. They run their mouths a lot, but are a vanishingly small part of the left due to most organizations considering trans people to be a minority that needs protection rather than a threat that needs snuffing out.

I haven't seen any TERFs saying trans people need snuffing out. About the worst I've seen is being rude or not using preferred pronouns/names.

quote:

The intellectuals among them say that "we need to abolish gender and trans people reinforce it", but at the same time tend to root themselves in arguments of biological essentialism (having a penis makes you violent, having a womb makes you nice

If you're born with a penis, you get assigned the masculine gender role, which encourages you to be violent and domineering. And if you're born with a womb and corresponding external sex characteristics, you get assigned the feminine gender role, which encourages you to be subservient and nice. It's not that men and women are naturally like that at all - if they were, there wouldn't be any point in feminism - but they're groomed from birth into these social categories, and that has an effect on you, however you identify later in life.
It's not a sure thing of course, men and women can and do behave differently from their assigned genders, but the violent crime stats show that men are committing the overwhelming majority of violence and women just aren't.

quote:

and therefore trans women cannot be women and trans men cannot be men)
I think here there needs to be a distinction between sex and gender. Radical feminists say woman = female, man = male, and are talking about sex; gender theorists have various definitions of woman and man, but they are all describing gender. They disagree with each other because they're defining different things.

quote:

that reinforce gender far more than trans people being attracted to the same artificial behaviors that cis people enjoy for themselves because the behaviors trans people are expected to perform for the gender assigned to them at birth alienates them.
Most cis people don't enjoy those behaviours for themselves. Certainly women and girls don't like the bad treatment they get, otherwise the feminist movement wouldn't exist. Girls don't like being harassed, expected to do all the chores, sexualised, undervalued compared to boys or even cut or killed in many cultures. That alienates most women. And boys are alienated by gender norms, especially ones around not expressing compassion or crying - that causes them a lot of emotional problems and stress.
Gay and lesbian people don't like being expected to engage in heterosexual relationships and sex, often on pain of serious punishment, that's a gender expectation too. A lot of radical feminists are critical of trans discourse because they don't conform to gender norms and never have, and they've grown up to be happy butch lesbians or stag bisexuals who don't want to transition, and are concerned that young LGBT people are being fast-tracked into medical treatment for a dissatisfaction with gender or their bodies that will eventually resolve itself or go away when they meet a community of other LGBT or gender non-conforming people and feel like they're not alone.
Other gay men and lesbians don't like concepts like the "cotton ceiling" - being expected to date or have sex with trans people of the opposite sex but same gender. Prominent figures like Riley J Dennis and even a workshop at Planned Parenthood focused on how to pressure homosexuals into heterosexual relationships. This is quite a recent thing, historically lesbians dated trans men and gay men dated trans women, and across the world that still happens and is considered pretty standard, most trans people don't agree with this homophobia, but the loudest ones with the biggest following are making it a big issue. Even lesbian publications like DIVA and Autostraddle have been writing articles teaching lesbians how to have sex with penises. That's why lesbians in particular and gay men are opposed to the current strain of trans politics, though very few are outright against trans people themselves.

quote:

I mean, it's certainly the same argument that conservatives make against trans people, and conservative politics is largely focused around benefiting a small class of wealthy patriarchs.
The arguments I've seen from conservatives have generally been along the lines of "people should stick to their assigned gender role", the same reasons they hate butch lesbians or feminine gay men. Whereas radical feminists often are butch lesbians, and they'd rather gender just wasn't an issue, i.e. there shouldn't be such expectations on the sexes at all.
I'm not sure how radical feminism benefits wealthy patriarchs, but overmedicalising gender nonconforming and LGBT people certainly does, as does removing safeguarding and definitions of sex and gender in law. If sex is replaced with gender, employers can avoid paying for maternity leave by only hiring men and asking that half of them identify on paper as women. Maternity discrimination becomes perfectly legal because men can also have babies, so it's not discrimination any more.
And not to do the "big pharma" angle, but a lot of doctors and clinics are making far more money off cross-sex hormones, elective cosmetic surgeries and off-label Lupron for LGBT and gender-nonconforming people than they would be making on time-consuming talking therapies to help people feel better about their bodies and more confident about breaking gender norms.

Personally I'd be in favour of a system of recording sex and gender identity as separate characteristics - the same for cis people and different for trans people - or sex and cis/trans status. That way you can legally prevent sexism against women and girls, transphobia against trans people, and both against trans men. Otherwise if the law literally says "trans women are women and trans men are men", a lesbian trans men becomes legally equivalent to a cis straight man. Even though only one of them could be the target of homophobia, sexism and transphobia, and he'd then be without legal protections.

Did you miss that part where a whole bunch of terfs did a letter writing campaign to defund a children's charity that saves the lives of at-risk trans youth?

AIUI the issue was with that particular charity. Lots of charities that support trans youth also receive Lottery funding but weren't the target of any campaign. Mermaids, on the other hand, is under fire mostly for their homophobia:

and for teaching gender identity in terms of gender stereotypes (their training materials show a spectrum from Barbie to GI Joe), and reporting an attempted suicide rate among trans kids many times higher than the NHS's Gender Identity Development Service does, for advising on a TV drama (Butterfly) that broke just about every media guideline there is on depicting suicide attempts, and for contradicting advice given by the NHS.
The doctor they refer parents to, Helen Webberley, is currently suspended and under investigation by the GMC, and her husband who works with her is only allowed to practise medicine under extremely tight conditions.
Mermaids was the subject of a court order stopping them from contacting one family after the NHS Tavistock gender clinic had concluded their 7-year-old was not trans, but Mermaids insisted he was.

GIRES, LGBT Youth Scotland, LGBT Health and Wellbeing, any number of charities would have been a better choice for helping trans children, ones that only real extremists would oppose. But a charity involved in a lot of controversies and reminiscent of ex-gay organisations was a problem.
