Recently finished running through DOOM I and II and this is really cool.

As for me , just uploaded my first electronic track made with LMMS - Already working on another track but I'll probably be maining untzy electronic music, both dark and happy, maybe some metal if i can figure anything out besides basic beatmaking.Doing this because I need new hobbies - weirdly got hooked on by loving around in soundstage vr ,which is basically a simple VR production studio/DAW.

Also I changed the name to "Hickory"

New music! It's a postal project a friend and I worked on during quarantine. I had fun pushing my limits a little since I'm usually a lo-fi guitar kinda guy. Lots of chill synths, electronic noises, and keyboards, good for some vibing. Check out Easy Sunday or Zoom Out for the most "single" like tracks if ya want. Best listened to while watching slo-mo videos of water balloons popping. Enjoy!

I need to know how you did this. Or I'm just gonna steal your work and sample the gently caress out of it, your choice. :P

So, like you can text-to-speech something with an app and it comes out in Attenborough's voice? I'm not sure I follow what you did here, but I like it. I'm all about the sampler-fuckery, myself.

fake edit: no, you say "speech to text". Now I'm super-confused.

Also: hello goonsicians, I'm sorry I haven't checked in lately but my cat died a couple days ago and I've been kind of a mopey wreck. I've been listening to everybody's stuff today while finally cleaning up my goonette-cave and trying to distract myself, thanks for all the new noises! Y'all rock.

Yeah this is different from text-to-speech; I'm only using things Attenborough actually said and re-compiling them into a new narrative.

I used Audition to break Attenborough's "Life Stories" into a bunch of short chunks of dialogue, then used an R package that interfaces with Google's speech-to-text API to get the content of those chunks in text. Then I name the files for each chunk by their content, so I end up with a folder that looks like this:

From there the process of assembling them into a story is like those refrigerator magnet poetry sets. There's some fine tuning that has to be done to make it sound natural, but that's the gist of it. I should probably do a Youtube tutorial someday.

The cool bit is that using the speech-to-text approach makes assembling the library incredibly easy, and that used to be the rate-limiting step. When I did Son of Strelka and Hardcore Prophecy, each of those projects started with literally years (at a rate a couple of hours a week) of slowly working through source material and extracting bits I thought might be useful. I just did an amount of Attenborough text equivalent to what I did for Son of Strelka in two hours.

In case you don't know what I'm talking about :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Any38uNUelM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGYeTmHHZQM

The part that I've just automated is what's going on in the first 1:30 of this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTSFDMfEjqQ

It's the most work and least fun of the whole process, so I'm super happy to have it out of the way!

Thanks! There's something really fun about the process of dumpster diving for samples and trying to get them to tell a story as opposed to just typing one out. There's an interaction with the source material that sort of a cross between a fight and a collaboration, and the story often ends up going in a completely different direction because of some key sample or other. Voice synthesis technology is getting so good that it's almost an obsolete art form at this point, though, so we'll see if there's still a niche for this stuff in a few years.

In my quarantine/cat death/booze-caused insanity, I've got a real bee in my bonnet to do classic 80's/90's industrial covers, but with "traditional" instruments. Like, I'm looking for someone who plays upright bass who can pull off that bitchin' bass line Nitzer Ebb's "Join In the Chant".

I've put some tracks up sporadically since the quarantine began and I'm not sure if I've posted here about them. Anyway, I just finished the instruments and preliminary mix for my newest song. I thought I'd throw it up here before I track the vocals (this will take a long time because I am "not good" at singing) to get some input on the mix. Y'all have been helpful with this in the past.

The shuffle pattern I put underneath the instrumental/solo section in the middle is possibly the tastiest little drum thing I've ever recorded. I've never been a subtle player and have always been able to give you a loud, solid beat, but being subtle is a newer skill that I'm still practicing.

Enjoy!

Edit: I have determined that the mix was "bad" and remixed it to be "better."

I'm not gonna lie, I'm not sure :D

It's part of an experiment that glitched a bit. I sent 2 gate clocks from tempi (an intermittent 1/16th and a 1/2) to a CV crossfader to drive the enveloppes from Maths via the trigger input.

The idea was to modulate the crossfader to make interesting stuff happening.

But what is REALLY interesting is that Maths started generating 1/32nd bursts now and then. It doesn't do that if I send the gates straight from Tempi to Maths, only when processed in the Verbos CV processor first.

My guess is the attenuation and offsetting of the gates from the CV processor is randomly making Maths considering the rising AND falling of the gates as triggers, instead of just the rising.

That's all I could think of, the Maths manual doesn't help, it's not listed as normal behavior.

So basically, an accident that turned out really nicely, and since it's happening randomly, it gives it a very organic feeling which I love.

Serendipity in music is awesome, it's part of why I love circuit-bending so much. Ya never know what might come out.

True story:

In 2003, I was making the transition from club-oriented oontz-oontz EDM to more abstract/experimental/noise stuff. I got invited to play in The Big City at a noise festival. This being a "big break", and also feeling like I had to prove myself to the world since women circuit benders were few and far between at the time, I was pressuring myself ridiculously hard to make a good impression. Anxiety was thru the roof.

I get through the first 25 or so minutes of my 30 minute set just fine. Then, during my last piece, I flubbed and accidentally hit the DEMO button on my Casio instead of whatever it was I was trying to do. I'd built up almost half an hour of serious broody atmosphere, and suddenly out blares fuckin' "Happy Birthday", in 80's Casio tones.

I cut it off as fast as I can, but poo poo, I had that running thru the delay/echo, too! So now I have to pull it down from the mix. I do my best to come up with a way to end this disaster of a set while blinking back tears.

I'm totally mortified while hastily packing up my gear so the next guy can go on, and thinking "welp, thus ends my career in noise" when a complete stranger from the audience rushes up and gives me a big hug, saying "That was awesome! Did you know it was my birthday?! Who told you?!" Then he wanted to buy all my CDs. I gave them to him as a birthday present (and for making me not cry).

This was also the show I met my husband of 17 years at, but that's another story. :)

So over in the Blessed Images thread, I mentioned that I dug my cassette deck out of storage and have been rocking some old tapes (92-97-ish) that I made off the radio when I lived in NYC. I love me some house/techno, and used to just set up my deck with some 120 minute tapes when the live club mixes were airing.

A few goons have said "holy poo poo can you share them?! that's my jam!" and I want to spread the love. What's the best platform to share them on without getting a smackdown? So far Youtube's only slapped me once (for an unauthroized Missy Elliot remix I did, for fun and wasn't trying to monetize it). Y'all think Soundcloud's a good way to go or...?
