This is a weird aftereffect of a band that broke up earlier this year, but we ended up with two demos we paid a professional studio to record. And I took one of the songs and combining my sudden and inexplicable interest in drawing and "animating" thru the free software Krita, made a video? It's terrible but it's kinda funny I did this. I haven't really shared it, just keeping it in my youtube movies until I suddenly thought of it today. Based on true story! It's also my first foray in singing rather than just playing bass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32PpP3Ik2tI Fake edit: and it's the last time I "animate". It loving sucks!

I also posted this in the industrial thread, but I figured it's worth posting here as well. I just released my new EP, WASURENAKATTA, which is kind of an appetizer while I get my second CD situation sorted out. https://tangentstrategy.bandcamp.com/album/wasurenakatta-ep And yes, it has a manga style cover because I asked Bing "what kind of images do you think of when you hear 'Wasurenakatta?'"

So, I don't know how many of you all have ever used a service like Distrokid, but I pulled the trigger on it last month and while I'm not making money or anything, I kind of find it surreal that my stuff is on Spotify and about a billion other networks and apps I've never even heard of. I put up two game soundtracks (I have the rights to publish them on my own), an album of odds, ends, and demos, and my little 8-bit-inspired album, Nothing Fancy I say 'inspired' because a) it doesn't conform to the technical limitations of any old console, possibly making tracker purists mad, and b) I didn't make like 30 minutes of remixed Megaman tunes or anything like that, I tried to write and structure them as if they had lyrics, even though they don't. Anyway, this isn't an ad for the service or anything, I just found it neat. I'm planning on releasing a poo poo load more music music this year, so paying like $25 for all of it to be uploaded everywhere wasn't a bad deal. I've often wondered what would happen if I put some of my music up on Spotify or TikTok, but I've never used either of these platforms ever. I upload my stuff to Youtube, Soundcloud, and Alonetone, and I'm uncomfortable with doing promotion because I feel like my music really needs to be discovered by complete accident to be heard the way the artist intended, since that's basically how it came into existence. ![]() Lately, I've been pumping out tracks without much thought, sort of like journaling but with whatever musical equipment I happen to feel like firing up at the time. That results in stuff like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7SioQ0Iis4 and https://soundcloud.com/the_door_is_scary/02-08-2024a.

I have absolutely no idea how to promote my music. As a solo artist who played every instrument in the studio, I won’t be playing anything live possibly ever, but I still very much want to get it out there.

When you put it through Distrokid (or other services, probably), they upload it to social media sites, so you can go and make one of those FB, Instagram, Tiktok videos and type in 'Robot Cousin' and my stuff comes up to be used for background audio. I think even one of my albums made it to Snapchat. I say 'one' because Snapchat you have to specifically click on that option to include it there which causes an extra validation of "Are you SURE you own the rights to what you're uploading?!", which you just click through, if you do. I think I only remembered to do that for one album. I'm not broken up about it. Oh, also, I even have a cover song on there from Zelda 2 (final track of Ironic Jargon), and I had to put down the original artist so that Distrokid could properly send out the right royalties to them. Oddly enough, Koji Kondo did NOT write the Zelda 2 music.

One of the wild things about being on Spotify is that sometimes someone will add you to a list or blog post or podcast and suddenly your # monthly listeners goes up and you have no idea why. On a couple of days in (IIRC) April of last year something happened that drove my monthly listeners from about 5-600 in an average month to 14-1500. The even weirder thing is that it's never gone back down, I still get about that many people every month. I have no idea what happened but I'm very happy about it. Even stranger is the end of the year Spotify Wrapped stuff, where it turns out that I was maybe a half dozen people's most listened-to artist for the entire year. I don't know who these absolute weirdos are but that's about the nicest completely unintended and anonymous compliment I have ever received.

I remember getting bumped up to 6000 listens of a track out of nowhere and then my then singer said he just asked a playlist to add us. I mean that's how it works. Another person I know got more than 50k listens of a song that's only alright because she's a software engineer and knows someone at spotify lol. Modern day payola, except it's thru LinkedIn

This might be a silly question, but are you guys concerned that another musician might pinch a riff, vocal hook, or melody from your songs? Back in the olden days, musicians had what they called the poor mans copyright. They'd take a cassette tape of their recording and mail it to themselves in a sealed box, with the dated stamp. Though others said that wouldn't hold up in court.
|
![]() |
|
If someone samples or covers something of mine and posts it just for fun or plays it live somewhere my only response is to be flattered and pleased that they would think it worthwhile. If they do that and make a lot of money without talking to me and cutting me in on it, I would lawyer up. The poor man's copyright thing may not be ironclad in court but I imagine it could help, but these days I think just posting it on a public site that tracks what date it was uploaded would probably do the same thing with less hassle. I have not had to deal with that in the audio world but I actually did use the fact that some photos were uploaded to the internet on a specific date in court against my lovely ex-landlord, and we stomped his rear end into the dirt with it.
|
![]() |
|
Yeah, the "mail it to yourself" thing was just so you could document it existing by a certain date. Having it uploaded on a certain date that can be confirmed achieves the same thing. The other two parts of copyright infringement are proving that the offending piece copies yours and proving that the offending party could have heard (or read or watched or seen, whatever depending on the medium) your work. Like if you wrote something and it just sat on a shelf in your room for 20 years and then someone else writes something dramatically similar they're just going to say "well how could I have read a book that never left your bedroom."

hi, I've been forums wandering and randomly letting people know I make electronical techno music, so I figured I should go here. Its in the same style I vaguely remember hearing over 20 some odd years ago in a cornfield. I call it Redneckno. Its inspired by Detroit Ghettotech/early techno, Houston Screw, Jamaican Dub and a little Bristol Jungle as a treat. here's my latest live set: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49Tbaw7QR_U I do a live session every week on Wednesdays around 1015pm EST. I might move it to twitch. IDK yet. I have a huge todo list of stuff to get the live show dialed in correctly. Ultimately, I'd love for the Music Barn to be a real thing that real people come to and enjoy real electronic music made by a real fuckin weirdo. I'm also on your favorite music streaming platform! Just search for coconono. That's stuff is a bit more chill. I've got a soundcloud that acts as a preview/mess around/marketing point. I'm recording more material constantly and some of it goes up on the cloud. speaking of marketing, I took a cue from sex workers and put all my links and such in a handy dandy spot: https://linktree.com/coconono I've been recording music since the 90s. I've been featured on netlabels(SLSKREX), sold CD releases on MP3.com(under both M Sound Assault Crew and coconono) and even dressed up as a giant penis and sang a song(and was tackled by security who didn't realize I was booked). That doesn't mean I'm any good at it, just committed to the bit. please make my numbers go up, I want to buy a weed. coconono fucked around with this message at 20:32 on May 30, 2024 |
