Do you have to nominate the bloke who scores double points before the game? Is it the same guy for each game or can you change it? These things are important to the integrity of AFLX, (and Gatorade, the thirst quencher.)

I will actually be interested in how many people show up to watch AFLX. Yes, it's cheap. Yes, it's on a day with no other footy, (I think. They wouldn't be stupid enough to schedule it literally against an AFLW game would they?). And yes, it will be over soon and is a gimmicky thing that a family might go to. But even with all of that, the sheer insurmountable stupidity of the whole excercise, and how far removed from actual footy it is will surely keep many people at home. Coz I would posit the people that would want to watch it, want to watch it out of morbid curiosity, and that is better done on TV where you can change the channel at your convenience.

If you are playing AFLX so angrily that you punch someone, or even if you care so much as to put in a tackle high, hard, and/or dangerous enough to injure someone, then for sure you deserve to lose regular season games. But to do that you would have to be so dumb, and so much inflicted with "white line fever" that the good blokes(tm) who are the captains would probably not pick you on their team. Luke Hodge notwithstanding

Serious question: When this version of AFLX dies on it's arse, (poor ratings, poor turnout, players bad mouthing it, clubs disrepecting it etc.), what are they going to do to "jazz it up" next year?

I just looked at the AFLX teams and it turns out each of the bullshit made up teams have their own specific sponsor. I was looking up the teams to see who was going to pull out last minute with "general soreness" etc. And I am surprised that it is so few. I expected a lot more.

I honestly kind of liked it. It is a silly hit and giggle that no-one involved with is taking too seriously. All the players are laughing and having fun. I liked Cripps/Riewoldt kicking a goal Charlie Brown style. Was it worth the money/time/marketing put into it? gently caress no. Should they have spent some/all of that on the Women's league? Hell yes. Will anyone remember these games beyond a day or two? Not a chance. What was it's purpose? Who can tell? But as a silly kick and giggle with shiny colours and stupid rules, it was OK.

I don't know why we need runners anyway. Just have the players learn an elaborate code built out of gestures and physical tics, like Mr. Burns did in that SImpsons baseball episode. This is a sensible and reasonable option, and I am 100% serious about implementing it.

Did the AFL give a reason as to why they denied the Crows' request? I mean, we all know it's because they don't care about AFLW, and fear it's growing popularity. But what was their official reason.

I'm assuming they will go in with an unchanged team. This is cool and good. I hope you do more. Are you showing/sending these to the club, or the players, or any sort of footy media? The Deadly Hume posted:I dunno about that, if anything it's all the other clubs in the league that shafted the Roys because they were terrified of the North merger option (which would have been better for Fitzroy fans in someway). The Brisbane org has done as much as they can to maintain the connection, though it can be argued the VAFA club is the real Fitzroy now. I see what you are saying, but I can never forget the Footy Show, I think the day after the merger was announced, and the then Chairman of Brisbane being the biggest smuggest arsehole crowing about the death of a club and laughing about the clash between Fitzroy and the then Bears as being a "percentage booster". So whilst you may be right, and the facts may not support my story entirely, but my memory and my gut treats the narrative as "Brisbane killed Fitzroy, and then laughed and danced on it's corpse"

Nutsngum posted:And Carlton fans wonder why their club is kinda hated. I think this is actually interesting, (not specifically Carlton, but for all clubs.) Do you know/understand the reasons other people might have an aversion to your club. For example, I am a Hawthorn supporter, but I think I know and understand exactly why some might hate us, (smug born to rule middle class fans, Jeff Kennett, Luke Hodge, James Sicily, Back to back to back recently, etc.) And also, how much of why you think people hate your club is the real reason people hate your club? And also I think it is interesting why do you feel the way you do about a particular rival club? Is it because of a player, or a club official i.e gently caress Carlton because of John Elliot, or gently caress Hawthorn because of Luke Hodge or Jeff Kennett? Is it a learned historical rivalry, i.e. you hate them because you are supposed to hate them? Is there a specific incident in the past that soured you on a club, or gave you a soft spot for them? Because like teh reason one barracks for the club one barracks for, everyone would have a different story about each club they feel one way or another about.

The "I was trying to hit him in the shoulder" is bullshit rules lawyering. He hit someone, on purpose, with no other purpose than to elbow them, behind play, in a malicious manner. That is bad. And given that, regardless of where he was aiming, he hit the guy in the head, it should be more than 2 weeks worth of bad. And because I feel like being hypocritical ... the fine for the finger and snorting gesture reeks to me of pearl clutching and caring more about a PG "image" for teh game. So I am not too bothered by it being a tad lenient.

According to the AFL website the Adelaide member, (3 game member) who racially abused Paddy Ryder on social media has had his membership revoked. Also Gold Coast has finally come into it's own as a football club, as one of it's fans is being investigated for "unacceptable comments", which I think were also racist.

So are we reasonably sure that GAJ was being booed for being a homophobic fundie? What about the other AFL player that liked it?

Remember, the "we booed him before [X], and are just booing him for reasons not connected to [X]" was the very argument used by the racists booing Goodes. I agree, both situations are entirely different, but don't fall into the trap of using their arguments. And to be extremely and unwarrantedly generous to the AFL, maybe they are trying to get ahead of the booing situation this time and nip it in the bud, as opposed to how they did gently caress all with Goodes and let it develop into the horrendous shitshow it became. Also, Geelong play West Coast this week with their notoriously boo-happy fans, but the game is in Geelong which is just as known for it's one-eyed feral fans. So it will be interesting to see what happens, especially given the AFL putting a target on his homophobic god botherer back.

Given that I have lived out of the country for a while, I am going to my first live game of football in about 5 years today. Also given that I leave the country again in 2-3 weeks for my new job, this will probably be my last live game for a few more years. It is a Melbourne game. yay.

So, on my footy adventures yesterday: I went with my dad to the Hawthorn/Melbourne game, (Hawthorn aren't good anymore. They looked slow. Melbourne aren't good either, they were just better than Hawthorn), and afterwards because my brother and my niece were going to the Richmond/Bulldogs game, we stayed in the city and tagged along, (Richmond also seem to be not so good. There was very little pressure from them and it was too easy for the Dogs.). But the point of this post is not the scintillating football analysis above, it is that my dad got a Senior discount on his ticket to the MCG, but was told that Marvel Stadium does not offer Senior discounts. The AFL trying to dissuade old people from watching the footy at their own stadium?

cmndstab posted:They really missed an opportunity to rebrand the show with a new name, etc. Instead the people who were still somehow choosing to watch it were going to balk at an all-new cast, and everyone else had a Pavlovian response to anything called "The Footy Show". On the Footy Show, I think the telling thing was, initially after ratings were tanking due to people getting fed up with Sam being offensive, they doubled down on that and had Eddie say he was going to let Sam "off the leash", which led to further loss in viewership. This shows how out of touch the whole production was. On Robbo: Yeah, after seeing the footage, I agree. He was trying to say that Carlton should say to themselves "hey, we have been soft and weak, so lets go hard this game", and he thought the best and easiest way to say that was to use "gay boys".

Just had a flash of the blinding obvious: Jarryn Geary had to go to a Chinese Hospital. And as someone who has been in a Chinese public Hospital, (in Fuzhou and Chengdu though, not Shanghai), this does not bode well for him. Although they may well have sent him to one of the fancy rich people/foreigner hospitals, which are better. Also, he now has to endure an 8+hour flight with a broken leg. A broken leg thathas probably not been dealt with to the standard that a professional athlete is used to.
