There should be an epilogue 6 months in the future or something, where Cavill has the exact facial hair he had for Mission Impossible

I don't mind Affleck, but Cavill is just a perfect Superman. I was floored when I first saw him in the Clark-Kent-with-glasses getup. Like how is that the same guy?!

Folks getting hung up on the piss jar will never not be weird to me. Most of the time it's not even a critique of the text of the movie, of that character. Like it has been said, Lex leaving a jar of piss on someone's desk would be totally in-character for him. Most critiques are of Zack Snyder making that decision to have a piss jar.
I ducked out to go to the toilet and missed the scene where Lex and the senator talk about piss, so my reaction to a jar labelled "granny's peach tea" out of nowhere was "uh? whuh? bluh?!"

Right you kind of saw the flip side of it with Thanos in the Infinity War/Endgame movies, where yeah, dude is a monster created by his circumstances, but you see a whole lot of people around the time saying Thanos was right, and agreeing with Thanos's plan.
This is extremely funny/terrifying because Thanos's plan is gibberish that may as well have come from a GPT2 text generator.

I liked Man Of Steel ok the first time I saw it, but watching it more recently it really hit the spot and I fell in love with it. I think originally I just thought "well yeah it's grimdark like all the reviews said, but that's the world right now, everything's grimdark" and I had to let it percolate and come back to it to realize it actually isn't grimdark. Eg when Clark asks "what was I supposed to do, just let them die?" I remembered his dad saying "maybe" which is a cool and morally grey response, but on a rewatch what he actually says is "...........maybe......?......." like a worried father who doesn't have the answers his son needs.

I agree the military gets a bit too much spotlight, but at least they get a few instances of looking like dumb assholes (putting handcuffs on the flying alien?!) and the film ends with Superman telling them to get off his back

One thing I only noticed recently when I rewatched was that the Martha moment is also Batman realising Superman actually is brave.

quote:

Breathe it in. That's fear. You're not brave. Men are brave.

quote:

You were never a god. You were never even a man.
But when Superman thinks he's about to die, he uses his last breath to beg for someone else's life, a selfless act- which means he is brave, and is therefore a man.

I think the Martha moment is still pretty reviled generally, but I've only grown to like it more over time. It rules that there exists a phrase which is basically a cheat code that hacks Batman's brain, and Superman stumbled on it by sheer miraculous luck. I gather that the Anti-Life Equation which will probably come up in Justice League is something like a revelation which turns people evil, so the Martha moment is Superman discovering the opposite. The... Pro-Life Equation?? Needs a better name.

Also, Jack Allison had the best rebuttal to the whole "Zack Snyder is dope who thinks his films are more mature and important than they are". That's exactly the kind of person who you want making superhero films. Marvel films are deathly afraid of being earnest, so having someone making something that they think is super important and mature is a good thing. Means they'll try to make them in such a way that's contrary to modern superhero films. You won't convince people any other way but you might with that line of argument.

TBH that's what attracts me to the "DC verse" or whatever they call it: they (tend to) take the idea of superheroes seriously. Not as in they're pretentious and trying to be deep, but as in they're just earnest about the whole concept. Superman gets a blue outfit with a red cape and there's no detached irony in it. You see like pure joy on his face when he learns to fly. Bruce's "he's never fought us" in the JL trailer on its own feels somehow inspiring because I get the sense he really believes it. I try to avoid the consumerist instinct to get into "console wars" but I've seen a few of the Marvel movies and I really can't remember any times when they tried to have inspiring heroism

I had wondered myself about the idea you bring up, people thinking WB is sinking money they can't spare into this project. Streaming services' return on investment seems opaque at best from the outside, so I can't imagine a huge media company taking a massive gamble on, what, Zack Snyder saying he has a movie ready to go? Even if they don't make a penny off it (how would they know? It's entirely possible they're already making money off it as #SnyderCut dudes sign up for HBO) I can't believe that AT&T the massive telecommunications conglomerate would be harmed by it

I randomly skipped in that reaction video right to the bit where a soldier says "the alien sir, they're calling him Superman" which I always thought was a weird take on the "hero's name origin story" thing. The idea seemed to be that people see him, and they see the S, and they just naturally think "oh of course it must stand for Superman". So Superman never really gets a scene where he's named, it's just... understood that his name is Superman. It's weird but I kind of dig it, it's got that "bond between Superman and the people" feel

I've seen clips of Josstice League and I keep getting the urge to watch the actual movie like prodding at a loose tooth. Like did they really have Henry Cavill's Superman say "yeah, I like truth... and I like justice" as like a one-liner? Surely not! One reason I hope the Snyder Cut is a hit is that it'd have the potential to boost interest in original cuts of other movies, including but not limited to Suicide Squad, as well as encouraging executives to keep their hands off future movies and trust that the creative people making it know what they're doing. That sounds unrealistic, but tbh a year ago the Snyder Cut being released and shooting additional scenes to make it a 4 hour miniseries sounded unrealistic

I checked out Owls Of Gahoole (only $2 to rent on youtube right now) mainly because I wanted to see how Zack Snyder it could possibly be given it's a kiddie movie about owls. The answer, it turns out, is Insanely Zack Snyder. Loving closeups of epic blades throwing up showers of sparks as they clash against each other, slo-mo, it's got it all. The hero kills the villain by stabbing him through the heart with (more or less) a spear with a glowing tip! Then he's upset by what he's done and has to be reassured that he did the right thing. He does join the military at the end though...

It also has the Snyder Superman thing of emphasising that fighting bad guys isn't glorious and fun, it's just what you have to do. The fights suffer a little from the fact that I had trouble telling the characters apart a lot of the time because they're just, you know, all owls- albeit some have glowing red eyes and whatnot. I kind of like that though because the owls all looking very similar just makes the villains' obsession with racial purity look even more petty and ridiculous. It's pretty good overall

I gotta say, I am unsure about the idea of a four hour black and white superhero movie. I don't know what would be added by it being in black and white. That said, Snyder talking about his "ideal" version of the movie, which is obviously not what will be released on HBO Max and will probably be reserved for some fan-screening at a con or something years from now, is causing a lot more anger than you would think

One reaction I saw was "well Trump lost, so I guess at least this Snyder Cut stuff will keep them busy". I'd be interested to know the average political leanings of the guy's fans; I imagine the DC superhero movies attract some right wing guys who consider the Marvel movies irreversibly cucked and reflexively want to contribute to their competition (a la the replies any time Sony does a black lives matter tweet all saying "well I guess I'm buying an Xbox!" and vice versa) but I mean, BvS is a story about Batman being manipulated by the billionaire-owned media into being frightened of an immigrant. I can't imagine what right wing people would get out of it other than it literally just not being a Marvel movie
