I’ve been trying to learn this game and doing the newcomer playlist mostly, so it’s only three maps or so, but I still find myself confused about which soft walls lead where and figuring out what’s worth reinforcing and what’s worth blowing a hole in. What’s the best way to figure this out? Should I start a custom game and just wander the halls of the bank until I figure out how the map works? Or is playing with people online and remembering which walls don’t get me team killed to reinforce.

My opinion - you're better off playing with people to not only watch where they reinforce, but also learn which entrances other people use most often. Learning the maps themselves takes quite a bit of time due to the sheer number of them, but understanding play patterns will help quite a bit and likely be a faster method.

Do a solo custom match as sledge and whack your way through all the walls in a level to see what goes where; otherwise it's just time and map knowledge. As far as reinforcement goes the basic guidelines are: don't reinforce next to someone unless it's a 3 panel wall > reinforce exterior (outside) walls first > don't reinforce next to Mira > if playing Secure Area you usually want to reinforce all walls around site > if playing Bomb you want to reinforce most walls but create rotation holes BETWEEN sites so you can defend both without being cut off If you can do those 5 things on a regular basis you're on your way to understanding how to defend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTP3Iadjw38 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWDngqH2VY0

Almost got kicked for randoming Tachanka during a secure are match but ended up clutching the round when the last two enemy team members couldn't push because I was covering their only angle of approach and they didn't have enough time to get to the other side of the map and use the other entrance

Hibana's raison d'être is now only when you want to sit in spawn on a tower and open a reinforced wall through a window. Therm at least still has a rush capability to him.

imo hibana's ability makes a great remote decoy for timed rushes at a different angle or flank iirc she also has breach charges which can be synchronized/staggered with the kairos explosion to make it very confusing for defenders to tell where she is going to peek from if she wants to push immediately after detonation on top of this pretty much anything that makes sound benefits the attackers because it masks their movement against entrenched defenders that rely too much on their headphones
