Late Fall - (Lianhe, Metal Week(4), Day 6) - Continued In turn, Pūmič related the story of the first village she’d ever seen. Her retelling focused on what the important parts were to her. How flimsy the wooden caves the villagers lived in seemed. How short and weak the villagers were. How strange and wonderful doors were when she first encountered. At the end of her story, she offhandedly mentioned that Wotjeo had translated for her and their guide, Zhiyi, while they negotiated with some small leopard spirits. Strangely, Qiqiang Haruhia seemed most interested in her description of negotiating with the spirits commenting that, “Wow! Being able to talk with spirits would be really convenient. Even the Lianhe can’t do that! Supposedly the wicked Black Robes could. According to the old legends, they were dastardly villains who could trick spirits into attacking their neighbors. The only good thing the Viridians ever did was wipe them out.” Pūmič wanted to argue that the Black Robes like Zhiyi were nice, but Wotjeo reminded her in time that Zhiyi wanted to remain a secret, much like their home. Fortunately, she hadn’t mentioned the color of Zhiyi’s robes during her story since it was such a minor detail. All she said was, “Everything I’ve heard about the Viridians is awful and they hate everything good. Since the Viridians hated the Black Robes, maybe they were good too.” Qiqiang Haruhia nodded slowly, “Maaaybe. The Viridians are big jerks.” *** While Pūmič didn’t dislike Qiqiang Haruhia, and was slowly getting over her fear of Wuye. That didn’t mean her proud retelling of having beaten up Wuye wasn’t unsettling. Worse, she was one of the few disciples who was polite to Wotjeo. Which meant everyone else treated spirits even more cruelly. It certainly put Liuxue’s technique for making friends with spirits in context. It was time to stop avoiding her shamrock-green-haired friend. Somewhat surprisingly, Liuxue is already there when Wotjeo and Pūmič return to the wooden cave they share with her and Bčiké. When Pūmič asks her to challenge Tu Fei for her, she vibrates with excitement. “Oh! This’ll be fun. I’ll have to think up an excuse to fight him.” Liuxue smiles conspiratorially at Pūmič, “Unless you want me to challenge him for challenging my friend? It’ll discourage people from duelling you, but you may not want that if you’re trying to collect dantians from them.” 1) How does Liuxue challenge Tu Fei A. Makes up an excuse (will have more fights) B. Because he challenged her friend, Pūmič (will have a lot fewer fights) Write in Afterwards, there’s still plenty of time before Night approaches, so Wotjeo suggests they try to talk to Administrator Un now. Wotjeo and Pūmič jog over to the big wooden cave the Job Hall is in and make their way swiftly through the wooden tunnels inside it to the wooden cave with five of what they now know are desks outside Administrator Un’s wooden cave “office.” They don’t have an appointment, so the once-born servant asks them to wait until the Administrator can see them. Being made to wait like this is a novel experience for Wotjeo and Pūmič, but they’re well mannered and so pass the lengthy wait talking silently with each other, discussing who, if anyone, they should challenge to get the remaining dantians from. Finally, another of the servants approaches. He presses his head to the floor and says, “Administrator Un will see you now, mighty twice-born. This humble one will show you the way, if that is pleasing.” Administrator Un was sitting in a chair behind her desk when the once-born servant led them into her wooden cave “office.” The gray-robed woman gazed at Pūmič speculatively. “I’m surprised to see you again so soon after you declined to continue learning from me. What do you want to talk to me about?” Pūmič explained. “Dinvuk told Elder Qianni he’d add a place for servants to sleep to my wooden cave, but he never did. We kind of forgot until we discovered how helpful having extra metal vital-essence in our sleeping cave was and started thinking about how to bring in dream vital-essence as well.” Administrator Un drums ink-stained fingers on the top of her desk in thought. “Cave? Oh, you mean your temporary living quarters. Dinvuk did make a note of that, but he also noted that with Lianhe Liuxue sharing your living quarters there would already be an abundance of servants there. At the time I didn’t think anything of it, but given his other actions I can see how it could be considered yet another attempt to sabotage you. Come to think of it, he only added servant sleeping quarters near one of the three practice halls. I’ll take care of that. For your own how house however, I’ll talk with Liuxue to see if she would have an issue with unaligned servants sleeping near her. It would be foolish of them to attack her, but twice-born of her station are vulnerable to more than just direct assaults.” Administrator Un thinks for a moment more and then adds. “There’s another option. The newest group of servants will be completing their training soon. I could give you the first opportunity to hire one or more of them from Luxing Traveling Academy at the usual rates.” 2) More Servants? N. No, current situation is fine O. A O + ask Lu An if she would like us to hire more servants. The duels are good practice and we want the dantians for now. Maybe we can draw out another attack by whoever hired him and then have Liuxue jump in. Lu An is our head servant. I'm not sure Pumie can think of more work for her, but she might be feeling overworked and want someone to help and might have her own ideas about what she could take over. She might also want to hire a specialist to take over work she doesn't like. Ask Liuxue who she thinks hired him, why, and what we should do about it. A The challengers Liuxue would scare off are the ones we can beat. N We already have 20 loyal Lianhe servants to gather dream madra from. Any servants we recruit in town are more likely to work against us for minimal gains. I know we have CP to burn but I think we'll find a better use down the road. What time frame does the 5CP hiring charge cover?

Like we're getting a 10% xp boost to DreamSilver by lining our walls with metal vital essence. I doubt hiring one more servant will matter, but 100 bunks always filled with sleeping people might be enough essence to push us over.

According to Liuxue the technique shoved Bčiké to the far wall, just like it had on Wotjeo, but fell apart moments afterwards, leaving Bčiké free to resume the fight almost immediately. As she promised Pūmič she didn’t bring the smaller girls name into, instead loudly proclaiming that it was a warning to everyone not to challenge either Zhuque or Chew Chengzhang to steal their VEAs next month. Pūmič didn’t ask for Tu Fei’s robe. She couldn’t very well take it after asking her name to be left out of things. Neither did Liuxue offer to give it to her. Liuxue said she planned to hold onto it for a few weeks to give Tu Fei a chance to buy it back, as was traditional. Late Fall - (Lianhe, Metal Week(4), Day 7) After a cheerful breakfast with Liuxue the following morning, Wotjeo and Pūmič jogged through the village. Despite taking the time for breakfast with their tall friend, the duo arrived at Dashuijie’s wooden cave early enough that the elegant girl wasn’t waiting long for them. Dashuijie gratefully accepted the copy of Elder Qianni’s scroll on healing without madra that Pūmič had brought. Pūmič’s copy of the scroll was written in Healer Zhe Zhuru’s blocky, workmanlike hand. The one Pūmič gave to Dashuijie was written in Lu An’s efficient hand, as she’d been the one to copy it. Together, the three of them made their way to the once-born hospital. Instead of jogging, Wotjeo and Pūmič limited themselves to the more sedate pace that their elegant vividly blue-haired and blue-robed friend preferred. When they arrived at the once-born hospital, the trio found a surprise waiting for them. All the once-born waiting to be treated were packed into one side of the first part of the wooden cave. One and all they had their faces pressed against the floor. The other side of the wooden cave was given over to a simple wooden chair and desk. Normally one of the once-born aids at the hospital sat there and organized who would be treated when. This morning, the aid was pressed in among the other once-born and his seat was taken by a breath-takingly beautiful woman. Her lips curved up in a slight smile as Wotjeo and Pūmič skidded to a stop. Dashuijie came to a stop behind the duo looking for all the world like she’d intended to stop in the doorway all along, and was not at all inconvenienced by a massive bear and small girl blocking her from moving further in. The woman’s lips curved slighter more and she inclined her head in approval to the elegant girl’s feat. “Good morning. I am Healer Luxing Ginko. You must be Pūmič. Healer Zhe Zhuru has good things to say about you. I hope you don’t mind if I borrow your friend for the morning.” For all the woman’s smile, her tone didn’t contain even a hint that her words were a question. The way she said it, it sounded more like a statement of fact. “I understand you’re looking for a mentor, Meidou Dashuijie. Your recent interest in becoming a Medical Saint makes you more promising than I’d initially thought. Before I make a commitment, I’d like to see how much progress you’ve made on your own.” Dashuijie is so excited that her typical elegant reserve is broken by a delight gasp of surprise. The older woman paused just long enough for the sound to be heard, almost as if she’d expected it, before continuing. “Follow me, your first patient is already waiting.” The woman moved so gracefully that she couldn’t really be said to have stood up. Rather, dark-blue robes rustled around her as she flowed up as smoothly and elegantly as a dancer. As she led Dashuijie away the storm-black edging of her robe flowed around her deceptively slender ankles like water. The edging was further ornamented by thread of gold suggesting lighting. Wotjeo and Pūmič had been apprenticed to Carmenia the Smith for a year, and could easily recognize gold, although they didn’t have any idea how it could have drawn out into such slender threads. *** There were more once-born needing treatment than Pūmič had seen waiting since the first time she visited the once-born hospital. Even with both her and Dashuijie working she didn’t finish treating the last one until just before lunch. Dashuijie didn’t meet the pair for lunch like she usually did, so they assumed she must still be with Healer Luxing Ginko. Pūmič was glad for her friend, but disappointed she didn’t get to eat with her. Shortly after Wotjeo and Pūmič joined Old Wupo for further hands-on lessons in how human bodies worked, Dashuijie finally rejoined them. She came in with an uncharacteristically expressive cheerful spring in her step. “Healer Ginko has agreed to be my mentor! I’ll meet her once or twice a week for lessons and practice in the Healer Hall. Thank you Pūmič! Work and lessons completed for the day, Pūmič turned her attention towards something as near and dear to her heart as healing - getting armor for her bear brother. She needed at least 3 more dawn dantians, and 6 more would be better in case not all the robes and dantians she’d won in duels this past week could be used together. Unfortunately, she was running out of people she really wanted to duel. There were still many disciples who’d insulted her while she was healing, but none who’d done so recently enough that Dashuijie thought she could challenge them without creating at least some ill-will. Zhong He’s robes would likely be useful even if he didn’t have any dantians on him, but he’d been reasonable about buying his jian back. Pūmič didn’t like the way he’d insulted Chew Chengzhang or hunted spirits, but did she dislike him enough to hunt him down and challenge him? Maybe. But maybe not. Wotjeo and her had won enough dantians they could likely buy the rest they needed from the market. More expensive than continuing to fight duels, but also the swiftest way to get her bear brother the armor he needed. Y E for Spirit's Strength now that we've figured out how to circulate madra between ourselves and Wotjeo Wrt pacing I think we're at the point where most normal training actions with established teachers (Zhe, Wupo etc) that don't tread new ground or introduce new teachers can be relegated into the background unless we combine it with an Social action. There's only so many ways we can cut up a cadaver or lift weights after all.

Y E - Private language lessons This dueling strategy is going to be untenable soon. Anyone who is weak is going to stop giving us an excuse, so we'll be in a position where we'll have to straight bully them. That will just leave people who are strong enough to cut up Wotjeo, and the point of the armor is so he won't get cut up so much. We're also on a time limit, we want this armor ASAP in case a serious threat, like the Nuli, challenges us. I'd like to just fill in the rest with cash and get started forging this week. Private language lessons aren't exciting, but Qianni will wake up soon and we should be fluent by then. I've been agitating for faster pacing for a while now. I like the academy, I even liked the daily updates at first, but I want to see some longer term things come to fruition in less than multiple IRL years. A more fluid pace is the natural result of having a more solid grasp of the academy now.

Y E - ask for help designing a new technique Our combination of Spirits Strength and Metal Guidance really isn't cutting it, both rely on the opponent not being able to dodge and being in the right range bands. We should see if someone can give us advice on a technique to bolster our combat abilities and help in creating one designed to work with Dream Silver instead of purely metal.

E - Ranged Duel Tutor. Throwing is 5xp off a level. Metal guidance is .5x off a level. Sprinting is 1xp of a level. Single opponent is 4.4xp off a level. A generalized tutor to go 'heres a bunch of tips' on a variety of combat topics would help raise most of these, hopefully? Specifying we want help with ranged combat because while I love the hilt, it's not a skill that's gonna grow without specific focus. Y - we have 31 diamonds 10 quartz if I'm not reading the sheet wrong, taking into account our 2 for this week and our life ones we cannot use. Come back and string them all up while abolishing the empire in a few decades or something, for now we need to learn how to talk all proper-like. Also Qianni talks really fast and we should probably get fluent before we start having lessons.

I'm about where Sheep is. I like Wupo, I like Zhuru, I enjoy the Elders but... I don't think we need them to be full updates unless it's something like today's Wupo post where something big happened. I'd be cool with blazing through our training actions unless theres something interesting, a new person, or other important detail in them. I do like seeing the social actions and enjoy your characterwriting, so I definitely dont wanna skip far ahead ever. I want to see our plots and the stories that our friends and us are involved in come to a head. I just dont care to hear about how to work out my deltoids, and while Zhuru being encouraging owns, the actual healing scenes are pretty similar.

The prices were distressingly reasonable. The smallest dawn (tier 1.1) dantians usually cost 2 diamond VEAs. Which could be thought of as a week’s cultivation. From that minimum amount, prices increased slowly with size, strength, and rarity of the madra type up to shining (tier 2.1) dantians which averaged 6 diamond VEAs. It seemed that the death of a spirit could be bought for little more than a pawful of liters of honey. The horrifying implications of the surprisingly low costs were not lost on Wotjeo and Pūmič. It meant that so many spirits like Wotjeo were killed for their dantians that they were fungible. Expendable. Interchangeable. It took them a while to focus on what they were here for after that realization sank in. Grisly as the reality was, it wasn’t without a silver lining. Big Bailei had explained that both the strength of the armor and the imbuement in it would improve with the strength of the dantians used in its constructions. Pūmič’s belt pouches currently held 37 diamond VEAs and 10 quartz VEAs. Setting aside the 3 Life diamond VEAs that they weren’t supposed to use for anything but cultivating, that gave them 36 VEAs to spend. The duo needed 4 diamond VEAs to cultivate with until they got their next months set of dantians in just over a week, but they had enough saved up contribution points to buy VEAs for cultivation if they had to. With the 8 dawn dantians they already had, they only needed four more, according to Big Bailei. At the low, low price of 6 diamond VEAs per shining death they bought, they could easily afford to buy second tier dantians and above, since that would only cost about 24 out of their 36 diamond VEAs. They could even afford to buy two more shining dantians to make even stronger armor, if they wanted to. 1) How much do you want to spend Price will vary a bit based on second vote and result of negotiation roll A. Almost all-in - 4 mid-size shining dantians (tier 2.2) or 5+ small shining dantians and trade in the robes you won ~all your VEAs except the three life ones, 4 diamond VEAs & 1 quartz VEA for cultivation (quartz is for experimenting with Xue Min next week) D. All-in - 4 mid-size shining dantians (tier 2.2 - 2.3) or 6+ small shining dantians and trade in the robes you won ~all your VEAs except the three life ones Write in Big Bailei discussed the different kinds of armor imbuements she could forge from the available dantians. The traders, each eager to make a sale, also made suggestions. The dantians the duo had already won in their duels would allow any of the options to repair itself. Big Bailei felt this was essential. “ARMOR THAT CAN’T REPAIR ITSELF IS BOTTOM OF THE BARREL TRASH. STRICTLY APPRENTICE PRACTICE PIECES. THE WHOLE POINT OF ARMOR IS TO GET DAMAGED SO YOU AREN’T. IF THE ARMOR DOESN’T REPAIR ITSELF IT’LL BE USELESS AFTER TWO, MAYBE THREE FIGHTS. I WOULD NEVER FORGIVE MYSELF IF I MADE YOU SOMETHING LIKE THAT, WOTJEO.” Wotjeo was initially drawn to a pawful of silver and gray dantians holding metal and stone madra spread across two different trader’s wooden caves. Much like Pūmič’s robes they would make for tough durable armor that didn’t excel against anything or provide special advantages, but provided solid protection against most techniques and weapons. Reusing the largest of the silver dantian’s Wotjeo noticed, but replacing the rest with varying shades of blue dantians taken from fish spirit beasts and other water spirits, Big Bailei suggested an alternative imbuement. “WITH THESE I WOULD MAKE ARMOR THAT WOULD ABSORB A SINGLE TECHNIQUE IN A FIGHT OF THE SAME TIER AS THE DANTIANS YOU BUY. LESS RESISTANT TO WEAPONS, BUT IT’D MAKE YOU LESS LIKELY TO BE TAKEN OUT OF THE FIGHT BY A TRICK LIKE THE ONE TU FEI USED.” Pointing out a trio of green and brown dantians Big Bailei explained to Wotjeo, “YOU COULD GO THE OTHER WAY AROUND TOO. ARMOR MADE WITH THESE WOULD IMPROVE THE WEARER’S VITALITY. IT WOULDN’T PROVIDE AS MUCH PROTECTION, BUT GETTING HIT WOULDN’T MATTER AS MUCH IN THE SHORT TERM AND PŪMIČ COULD HEAL YOU AFTER THE FIGHT WAS OVER. THIS IS MY SUGGESTION IF YOU’RE MORE WORRIED ABOUT WEAPONS THAN TECHNIQUES. IT’S NOT A GOOD MATCH FOR EVERYONE, BUT YOU’RE TOUGH ENOUGH TO ENDURE IT.” Dashuijie, who’d offered to come along, delicately pointed out. “I’ve heard that healers are often targeted by enemy archers. Mighty as Wotjeo is, I’m not sure any of the armors suggested so far would protect him long enough to catch up to an enemy willing to retreat while attacking from a distance.” Politely left unsaid was the fact that while Wotjeo and Pūmič were fast for Silver Bears, they were still painfully slow in a short sprint compared to most of the other disciples. Big Bailei nodded her head and pointed out a trio of cloudy dantians . “THAT’S A GOOD POINT. USING THESE I COULD IMBUE THE IMPERIOUS FORCE OF A GALE INTO THE ARMOR. IT WOULD REACT TO ATTACKS USING WEAPONS BY PUSHING THE ATTACKS OFF TARGET, OR EVEN AWAY WITH THE STRONGER DANTIANS AND WEAKER OPPONENTS. EVEN THE STRONGEST WIND IS WEAKER THAN MOST SWORD ARMS SO IT’S OF LIMITED USE UP CLOSE.” The trader suggests using a fourth dantian from an air spirit beast in place of the last remaining metal dantian, and Big Bailei agreed. “YEAH! DOESN’T NEED TO BE AS STURDY IF IT’S NOT GETTING HIT AS HARD!” After that, both the combinations and the ideas became more exotic. Some of the tamer suggestions were blue-green dantians that would give great protection against most poisons and venoms, and a selection of fiery red dantians that would burn anyone touching it. Cool as the fire one was, it was of limited use since Wotjeo and Pūmič didn’t think any of their fellow disciples fought unarmed. 2) What kind of imbuement does Wotjeo want his armor to have? All of these will take 2 weeks to make G. Metal/Stone madra focused - good, all-around defense. No obvious flaws or strengths H. Water madra focused - can absorb a single technique of the same tier as the dantians used. Weaker against weapons. I. Wood madra focused - extra vitality. Excellent against mundane weapons but of limited use against techniques. Provides a small amount of extra energy to supplement Wotjeo’s already excellent stamina. J. Air madra focused. It creates short-lived gusts of wind to deflect attacks. Works well on ranged attacks, minimal effect on melee attacks. K. Protection from Poison two techniques higher than the purchased tier, slightly weaker against weapons, adequate against water techniques but weak against most others write in, you may suggest color schemes and effects. Let your imagination run wild. *** After leaving the part of the village set aside for the traders, Wotjeo and Pūmič detoured to the Job Hall to request another lesson on using less madra with their Spirit's Strength technique from Erzi Huojiu.
