/\ Android apps: 3.5 million iOS apps: 2.2 million pop fly to McGillicutty posted:Everytime I show someone a photo from my pixel, they freak out about how good it is. That's good enough. That's (IMO) the biggest difference between a $200 android phone, and the +$800 flagship phones. The differences between my wife's Moto G4+, my LG Q6, and my friend's Galaxy S9 are pretty much what you would expect if you overlaid a photo quality graph and a phone price graph (they basically line up). My phone's photos are twice as nice as hers, while my friend's S9 is 2 times better than mine. Apparently the Pixel 3 is that much better than the S9. Other than that, I can't think of any real differences between the various cheap/expensive Android phones, as they all run the same apps the same way. That $1500 S10 isn't going to give you any real advantage when swiping on Tinder, and it's not like that 3GB G4 is going to be bogging down because of app updates any time soon. Favorite thing about Android phones is that you can do silly poo poo like this without any special software or fiddling around with settings. Just plug and play.

My wife had to block our provider's number because she would keep getting her hopes up, then sit down, do the maths and see that by the end of the contract you've paid 20-40% more than if you just outright bought the phone. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL (in Canada) are $250 dollars off right now, until March 25th or something. (if you buy direct from google)

SweetMercifulCrap! posted:Counterpoint: Cell phone contracts are a scam. In most cases you spend less money by buying the phone outright and going with a no-contract plan. Today even the big carriers offer a no-contract options that are good and they are always have a cheaper monthly rate than contract plans. I outright bought my last two phones (off eBay and from the Rogers store) so that I could keep my current plan. The lady checking my account told me to hold onto it no matter what, and any promotions that might come my way might have a disclaimer that my current plan will be cancelled. She says that Rogers is pretty good at not forcing their customers to give up grandfathered plans, but their promotions are designed to try and weed them out gradually. $29 a month for unlimited long distance calling in Canada, unlimited texting, call display, voicemail, and 250MB of data per month. I'm currently a Shaw internet customer, so I can have 10 devices connected to Shaw Open (their wifi that covers 80% of Calgary and outlying cities). The only time I really ever use my data is when I need to search an address that my offline navigation software can't find, which is pretty rare. numberoneposter posted:I'm $65 cdn and that's with a $35 corporate discount for 4 gb. Canada sucks for cell phones. Marketplace consistently ranks Canada in the bottom 10 worldwide for Cell and Internet plan prices. Back in the day I got a free Gen 1 Shuffle for test driving a vehicle and 5 minutes of using iTunes made me search for a free alternative that allowed me to drag and drop songs on to it. I don't know how they managed to make such a bloated and unintuitive program.

Bananaquiter posted:All my iPhone friends have smashed up screens, but I guess that's part of the aesthetic. What's that about? Every one of my students with an iPhone has a screen that looks like it was used to stop a truck, while their Android using counterparts don't have nearly that level of attrition. I've been told that iPhones are actually more durable than most other phones, so are Apple users just massively clumsy?

I really don't care what devices people use, but when you have people who don't have a clue dictating what everyone else has to use, it sucks. My current school board is slowly starting to figure out that just because you're in education, doesn't mean that you have to have 100% Apple products. They've finally stopped buying iPads which are beyond useless past the lower elementary levels, and I guess a bean-counter also figured out that spending 2-3x more for Apple devices over Chromebooks and Windows products isn't good for the budget when device attrition is as high as it is in a school setting. My previous school was 100% MS devices, and nearly all classes were taught on OneNote, Forms, etc. and coordinating and communications over outlook, skype, teams and other parts of the MS suite. The kids who went to that school (coming from other ones) would initially push back and insist on using their Macbooks, but their second year they'd usually pick up something from the surface line or a Windows laptop. My current board is starting to move away from the hot mess that is the Google suite, and we've finally gotten outlook logins. If they didn't drop a massive amount of money on their aging macbooks, we could have had a 1:1 device ratio for students and I wouldn't have to waste paper printing poo poo. I had some people from head office last year come into our school and they dropped by my classroom unannounced. I had a wireless HDMI dongle plugged into the projector, and was making a collaborative real-time note with my students on OneNote, while walking around the room and writing on my surface Pro, while students were passing around a Bluetooth keyboard that was connected to it and making the note with me. The big-wigs were asking what kind of iPad I had, and I showed them that it was a Windows device. They were shocked and said (paraphrasing) "you can do that without an iPad?"

tango alpha delta posted:Ahahahahahahahahaha. Wipes tears from eyes. Ahahahahahahahahaha. This was my understanding. Back in the late 90's Macs were better and faster than comparable Windows machines, but the hardware available to PC users has far outpaced what Apple is offering, and the +10% bonus you might get from the Apple OS is completely negated by the fact that a windows PC at 1/2 to 3/4 the price of a Mac is faster in every single way.
