Please play 3 if you liked 1 and 2. It’s those games, but a third one. The chicken collection is pretty brief and no more monotonous than say, forklifting or carrying books. It’s Shenmue.

Like full disclosure the plot barely advances at all, but if you like the vibe and moment to moment gameplay of Shenmue, it’s the real deal.

I don't think 'Shenmue 4' would qualify as just as 'fun, unexpected surprise', unfortunately. Shenmue 3 is a great Shenmue game as long as you go in with reasonable expectations about the story, and I guess if you dub Lan Di's voice in your own head or something.

Chicken collection good and Very Shenmue. So much of the game was ridiculously Shenmue, and even with dumb poo poo like the combat downgrade and the whole last quarter or so, it’s absolutely worth playing as a Shenmue fan.

It’s Shenmue. Yeah, I really don’t see how you wouldn’t like 3 if you liked the first 2. It feels so much like them that the only meaningful differences are Yu Suzuki couldn’t get his arcade games back from Sega to put in again, no Sega capsule toys, not quite as good fighting system and it’s in the Unreal 4 engine. Everything else feels the exact same, down to cadence of the English dub.

The chicken chasing is very Shenmue, but so is the 3 or 4 times you had to run back and forth to get the buns and wine to GET to the chicken chasing..

The way I would put it is that Shenmue 3 is very Shenmue and the closest you'll get any time soon to having more Shenmue in your life, its just also the worst Shenmue. Like the thing about buying buns and wine reminds me that the economy in general in 3 was just a huge pain in the rear end for me. Even when you can eventually use Ryo's ability to bend time and space to specifically cheat at gambling so you can bring in some big bucks that way (I.e. save and reload method like in Shenmue 2), it still takes like two too many steps to be more of a tedious grind than it needs to be. If you just pick all the herbs you see, you should never have money problems in Shenmue 3. They made it pretty easy to breeze past the money requirements of the story unless you’re like wasting it all.

Deep Silver is presenting at that Gamescom thing tomorrow, so if they still have any hand in Shenmue I suppose that’s when we’ll hear about it.

I fail the book airing on purpose to get it out the way as fast as possible usually. My favourite parts of Shenmue are the setting and atmosphere, not the busy work. I'll probably get 3 on Steam when it releases though, I'll take your words for it

You can certainly still play mini games and take on jobs, but you’ll rarely ever need to.

There are 2 mandatory money grinds and that doesn't count as busywork? It's even to learn the same move forwards and reverse!

The Shame Boy posted:There are 2 mandatory money grinds and that doesn't count as busywork? It's even to learn the same move forwards and reverse! I don’t count it because like I said earlier if you just pick all the herbs you see laying around and sell the sets you got tons of money, more than enough to not have to worry about the money gating. Maybe that counts as busywork, but it’s much faster and easier than chopping wood for a week or fishing or forklifting or trying to game the gambling system.

There will be a bit of sweet and sour with the announcement, but it's interesting. Sorry to sorta' hop around it, I have more on it I could share but most of it would spoil exactly what I'm teasing, which I promised not to do, just hint at it." what the gently caress is it. its either the remaining chapters released as DLC or netflix anime? edit: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1/status/1301194535167426561 even more confused now. I would love an anime of a young Japanese man buying capsule toys and drinking sodas. Just that. It would be like those animes that are “look at wet stockings” and “watch girl sleep” but even more pornographic

"More interesting than a documentary" is a hell of a measuring stick Something about his odd way of phrasing things makes me think it's a hybrid project of sorts, like a playable 'history of Shenmue' or something. Or maybe it's a collection of side stories in an unusual (but cheaper) genre, like a visual novel

A game where you play as Guizang who arrives in Hong Kong one week after Ryo and just keeps following in Ryos footsteps but after everything has already happened so nothing interesting happens at all. What I’m saying is the best Shenmue game ever made
